The Cooper baronetcy, of Shenstone Court in the parish of Shenstone in the County of Stafford, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 20 December 1905 for the agriculturalist Richard Powell Cooper. [2]
The family business, in which the first four baronets were heavily involved, was notable for the invention of insecticides related to veterinary products, today known as Sheep dip. To date there have been six baronets. Sir William Cooper, 3rd baronet, once said "Our family solved Australia's economy overnight" [3] [ citation needed ]
In terms of the British Baronetcy the Coopers are not an old family, their rise to prosperity during the Victorian era is a prime example of the achievement and social mobility possible in that age of scientific and industrial progress. When for the first time social advancement was occurring on a large scale.
The family business originally known as "Coopers" was founded by William Cooper, a veterinary surgeon, circa 1843 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. [4] Legend has it that he arrived in town with nothing but a bag with containing the tools of his trade. [5] In the 1851 census he is recorded as a resident of the High Street in Berkhamsted.
As a veterinary surgeon he was frequently confronted by the horrendous condition of farm animals caused by various parasitic insects, in particular a skin disease which afflicted sheep known as "sheep scab" - at the time treated very ineffectually by only ointments composed of tobacco stalk and brimstone emulsified in animal fats. [5] Cooper began to conduct his own experiments with preparations of arsenic and sulphur. By 1852 his experiments were conclusive enough for him to market the first truly effective sheep dip known as "Cooper's dip" it was sold in a powdered form which was easily transportable.
From 1852 throughout the remainder of the 19th century the Berkhamsted-based business expanded at considerable speed, the newly built factory taking every advantage of the new mechanical innovations of the day. In the 1860s the horses powered mills were replaced with steam powered machinery. The factory had its own printing press producing labels of a complicated design in order to prevent the sheep dip being faked by the unscrupulous.
Cooper died in 1885 - he had been joined in the business by two nephews Henry Herbert Cooper who died in 1891 and Richard Powell Cooper. Richard Cooper on the death of his brother Henry became the sole proprietor of the business by now known as "Cooper & Nephews". [6] [7] It is from Richard Powell Cooper that the Cooper baronets are descended.
The Cooper family grave is located in the Cemetery of St Peter's Church on Rectory Lane, Berkhamsted. [8]

Cooper was born on 21 September 1847, the son of Henry Cooper of Clunbury, Aston-on-Clun, Shropshire. Privately educated, he completed his secondary education at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, qualifying as veterinary surgeon in 1868. [16] Two years later in 1870 he founded his own practice in Tamworth Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire [7]
Aged 43 Cooper inherited the family business from his uncle, and from 1885 to 1889 undertook a large scale expansion of the company. A shrewd business man, he made investments in land worldwide and by 1913 owned 250,000 acres (1,000 km2) around the globe, and with mines in New Zealand, Rhodesia, and South Africa. [6] [7]
Cooper purchased Shenstone Court in 1889 (it was subsequently rebuilt [17] ) and gave up his career as a veterinary surgeon from that date. [7] [6] He was created a baronet by King Edward VII in 1905 for services to Agriculture. [6]
Sir Richard Ashmole Cooper 2nd baronet (11 August 1874 – 5 March 1946) was chairman of the family firm "Cooper McDougall & Robertson" from 1913 to 1946. He was a Unionist MP, representing the constituency of Walsall from 1910 until 1922. In 1917 together with Lord Ampthill and Sir Henry Page Croft he founded the very right wing National Party.
In 1925 Cooper decided to merge the business with that of Isaac McDougall, Chairman of McDougall and Robertson Ltd. The new company Cooper, Mcdougall and Robertson became a household name in Britain due to its merchandise which included many everyday products from domestic aerosol insecticides to nonprescription medications for both animals and humans. [6]
In 1940 the company joined the war effort and developed the Anti-Louse Powder known as AL63. [6] This was an important if largely unlauded medical breakthrough, during World War I lice had contributed heavily to the death count. The powder - a dust - not only killed lice but also acted as a preventative. The active ingredient DDT coupled with the new synthetic insecticide were gradually to replace the original Cooper's sheep dip which by now was used around the globe and assisted in the improvement to the economy of sheep farming from Australia to Argentina. The last powdered Cooper's sheep dip was produced in the mid 1950s. In 1959 Wellcome Research Laboratories bought the Coopers company. [18]
Sir Richard Ashmole Cooper had married Alice Elizabeth Priestland in 1900 [19] and the couple had purchased the Billington Manor estate in Bedfordshire. A keen horsemen at Billington Cooper had laid out a point-to-point course, and the Billington Races became a nationally known racing fixture. Cooper's eldest son William, regularly raced there against well known and aristocratic names of the day such The Prince of Wales and Lord Rosebery. The race course was ploughed up on the outbreak of war and never re-established.

Sir Richard Powell Cooper, 5th Baronet (13 April 1934 – 5 March 2006) was educated at Marlborough College [23] and was killed in a car accident on 5 March 2006.
Sir Richard Cooper married Angela Wilson in 1957 (she died 18 July 2004). [23] A keen agriculturist Cooper began his farming career running a family farm at Northchurch in Hertfordshire, before purchasing the Rowler Manor Estate in Northamptonshire. Later after his succession to the baronetcy he and his wife moved to Beaminster in Dorset. Cooper - a member of the Carlton Club - was Chairman of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and an agricultural advisor to the Governments of Kazakhstan and Albania. [24]
Cooper and his wife, who predeceased him, had three children - Jane, Belinda and Richard. The latter, who was always known as Adrian, succeeded him to the baronetcy.

Sir John St Aubyn, 5th Baronet, was a British Member of Parliament, High Sheriff of Cornwall and Grand Master of the Freemasons. Born in London, he succeeded to the baronetcy on 12 October 1772, at which point he inherited Clowance, the family's estate near Crowan, Cornwall.

It was created on 31 August 1821 for the noted surgeon and anatomist Astley Cooper, with remainder, in default of male issue, to his nephew Astley Paston Cooper, third son of his elder brother Reverend Samuel Lovick Cooper, who succeeded as second Baronet in 1841. The Barrett-Lennard Baronetcy, of Belhus in the County of Essex, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 30 June 1801 for Thomas Barrett-Lennard, subsequently Member of Parliament for Essex South. He was the illegitimate son and testamentary heir of Thomas Barrett-Lennard, 17th Baron Dacre. He was succeeded by his grandson, the second Baronet, the son of Thomas Barrett-Lennard, Member of Parliament for Maldon. His son, the third Baronet, was childless and was succeeded by his younger brother, the fourth Baronet. This line of the family failed on the death in 1977 of his son, the fifth Baronet, who died without male issue. The late Baronet was succeeded by his third cousin once removed, the sixth Baronet. He was the son of Sir Fiennes Cecil Arthur Barrett-Lennard, Chief Justice of Jamaica, son of Captain Thomas George Barrett-Lennard, son of the first marriage of George Barrett-Lennard, son of John Barrett-Lennard, second son of the first Baronet. The sixth Baronet was a Catholic clergyman. As of 2014 the title is held by his second cousin, the seventh Baronet, who succeeded in 2007. He is the grandson of Trenchard Barrett-Lennard, son of the aforementioned George Lennard-Barrett by his second marriage. As of 31 December 2013 the present Baronet has not successfully proven his succession and is therefore not on the Official Roll of the Baronetage, with the baronetcy considered vacant since 2007.
There have been two baronetcies created for the Guise family, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. The latter creation is extant as of 2014.
The Couper Baronetcy is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 June 1841 for George Couper. He was a colonel in the Army and fought in the Peninsular War, served as Military Secretary to the Governors General of Canada, Sir James Kempt and Lord Durham, and was Comptroller of the Household and Equerry to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent. The second Baronet was an administrator in India and served as Governor of the North-West Provinces between 1877 and 1882. Another member of the family to gain distinction was James Kempt Couper, second son of the first Baronet. He was a general in the Army.
The Goold Baronetcy, of Old Court in the County of Cork, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 8 August 1801 for Francis Goold, with remainder to the heirs male of his father Henry Michael Goold, who gave valuable service to the government of King George III. The Goold family descends from William Gould, who served as Mayor of Cork during the reign of King Henry VII. His descendant George Gould changed the spelling of the surname to Goold. He was the father of Henry Michael Goold and the grandfather of the first Baronet.
The Keane Baronetcy, of Belmont in the County of Waterford, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 1 August 1801 for John Keane, Member of Parliament for Youghal from 1801 to 1806 and from 1808 to 1818. He had earlier represented Bangor in the Irish House of Commons. The second Baronet was Whig Member of Parliament for County Waterford between 1832 and 1835. The third Baronet served as high sheriff of County Waterford in 1856 and the fourth Baronet in 1881. The fifth Baronet was a Senator of the Irish Free State and Governor of the Bank of Ireland. The sixth Baronet, Sir Richard Keane, excelled in the military and also worked in 1930s as a diplomatic correspondent for The Times newspaper. Sir Richard Keane was also partly responsible for bringing the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem to Ireland in 1962 and was a Knight of St. Lazarus. As of 2014 the title is held by his son, the seventh Baronet, who succeeded in 2010.

Sir Richard Powell Cooper, 1st Baronet was a British industrial entrepreneur. He was a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and inherited the family business, an agricultural chemical manufacturing company. Following his success, he was made a baronet for services to industry.
The Lynch Baronetcy of Galway – which later became Lynch-Blosse Baronetcy – is a title in the Baronetage of Ireland. It was created on 8 June 1622 for Henry Lynch, a member of an Anglo-Norman family and one of the merchant Tribes of Galway. Both he and the second Baronet represented County Galway in the Irish House of Commons. The third Baronet was a Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland). Forced to flee to France after the Glorious Revolution, his eldest son succeeded to the title and estates. The family seat was Athavallie House, Castlebar, County Mayo. The sixth Baronet assumed the additional surname of Blosse, having married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Francis Barker, heir of Tobias Blosse. The seventh Baronet also served in the Irish House of Commons representing Tuam.

William Cooper was a British veterinary surgeon, agriculturalist and industrialist who specialised in the manufacture of agricultural insecticides for livestock. He is credited with developing the first successful sheep dip, Cooper's Dip, in 1852.
The Johnson baronetcy, of Bath, Somerset was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 1 December 1818 for Henry Johnson, a colonel in the 5th Regiment of Foot and Governor of Ross Castle. He was the younger brother of Sir John Johnson-Walsh, 1st Baronet, of Ballykilcavan.
