Cosumnes Oaks High School (pronounced kuh-sum-ness), or COHS, is a preparatory four-year public high school in Elk Grove, California. It is the youngest high school of the Elk Grove Unified School District, opening in 2008 with the Class of 2011 being its first class of graduating seniors. In 2012 Cosumnes Oaks was officially accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Contents

The school is named after Cosumnes River and the many oak trees in the area, creating a strong link between the school and the Cosumnes River Preserve. The school serves students in the south-central end of Elk Grove and several communities near Cosumnes River Preserve and Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

Cosumnes Oaks is built using the same blueprint as Franklin High School, Monterey Trail High School & Pleasant Grove High School.

Stadium

The Cosumnes Oaks-Franklin Community Stadium is a multi-use outdoor stadium used by Cosumnes Oaks High School during their home games. It used as the home stadium for the Franklin and Cosumnes Oaks football teams as well as the Cosumnes Oaks soccer teams. The stadium is also shared by Franklin High School.

Sexual abuse crisis

Cosumnes Oaks Geography teacher Monte Antonio Reed, who was also a freshman football and basketball coach, was convicted of child sexual abuse of three Cosumnes Oaks students, a 15 year old student who was enrolled in his honors class and her younger sister and cousin. [2] The abuse happened in 2016 and 2017. The teacher was convicted of 2 counts of sexual intercourse with a minor under 16 years of age, 3 counts of oral copulation of a person under 16, 1 count of anal penetration by a foreign object on a person under 16, 2 counts of molestation of a person under 18, and 2 counts of lewd act upon a child. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison in September 2019. [2] The case was one of a number of cases of sexual abuse of students by Elk Grove Unified teachers [3] and resulted in accusations that the district did not take students seriously and did not have proper training and policies to prevent sexual abuse of students. [4]

Controversy

In 2016, Cosumnes Oaks was in the news after school officials had an African-American student removed from his graduation ceremony by Sacramento County Sheriff's Department officers because he refused to take off a kente cloth representing his Ghanaian heritage. [5] The student also stated in another article that he knew he was breaking the rules by wearing the cloth since the cloth was not approved by the district. Only items issued or approved by the district were allowed to be worn during the graduation ceremony. [6]

e-tran Elk Grove public transit system

E-tran was the public transit system for the city of Elk Grove, California and parts of south Sacramento. With currently 20 local routes, it began service on January 2, 2005 under a contractual service agreement with MV Transportation. As of July 1, 2019 Sacramento RT (SacRT) resumed operations of bus service in Elk Grove under an operational contract that was previously held by MV Transportation. On July 1, 2021, SacRT annexed E-tran.

Cosumnes River Preserve Jointly managed protected area in the Central Valley of California

The Cosumnes River Preserve is a nature preserve of over 51,000 acres (210 km2) located 20 miles (30 km) south of Sacramento, in the US state of California. The preserve protects a Central Valley remnant that once contained one of the largest expanses of oak tree savanna, riparian oak forest and wetland habitat in North America. Agricultural development has changed the landscape from groves of oaks and tule marshes to productive farmlands.

Blue Line (Sacramento RT)

Mary Tsukamoto Japanese American educator, cultural historian, and civil rights activist (1915–1998)

Mary Tsuruko Dakusaku Tsukamoto (1915–1998) was a Japanese American educator, cultural historian, and civil rights activist. She had taught in the Elk Grove Unified School District in Sacramento, California, for 26 years, and was described as having a passion to teach children how to learn from experience. The daughter of Japanese parents, she was relocated to an internment camp at Jerome, Arkansas, after the United States entered World War II. She developed a program about the internment period that is part of the California state curriculum for fifth grade history and a California Museum of History tour exhibit. She worked for Japanese American civil liberties, and played a pivotal role in the grassroots effort that led to the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. She also worked with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, where she developed an exhibit on internment for the Constitution's bicentennial. In March 2006, she was posthumously recognized as a National Women's History Month honoree.

CIF Sac-Joaquin Section

The Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) is the governing body of public and private high school athletics in parts of Northern San Joaquin Valley, California. Its geographic area also covers the California portion of the Lake Tahoe region; however, three schools in that area—North Tahoe, Truckee, and South Tahoe High Schools—are instead members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association due to their relative isolation from other California schools and their proximity to more populated areas in Nevada, especially in the Reno area. It is one of ten sections that compose the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). The SJS is split into seven divisions, each comprising several leagues.
