Cotterell Court is a 1,750-seat multi-purpose arena in Hamilton, New York. [1] It was built in 1959 and is home to the Colgate University Raiders basketball and volleyball teams. It is named for Wesley M. Cotterell '19, a two-time letterwinner in basketball and school trustee. The basketball arena was built as the northern half of the William A. Reid Athletic Center, a twin barrel-vaulted complex which also houses Starr Rink. The complex is located on the western side of campus next to Andy Kerr Stadium and across Broad Street from Huntington Gymnasium, the school's former athletics facility. The hardwood was replaced in 2016 for the first time since the venue's opening. [2] The gym has bleacher seating on three sides, with the main sides being the east and west sides and a much shorter section on the north side. The main entrance to the arena is on the south side, leading into the rest of the athletic center.

Contents

Cotterell Court hosted the championship game of the 1995, 1996, 2019, and 2020 Patriot League men's basketball tournament and the 2004 Patriot League women's basketball tournament. It has also hosted many notable concerts over the years, often as part of Colgate's homecoming or other university events. These include a November 4, 1977 Grateful Dead show which was recorded and released in its entirety on their 2014 live album Dave's Picks Volume 12 . [3] Other concerts include The Doors with Stone Poneys in 1968, Bob Marley on Halloween in 1979, and Phish in 1993. [4] [5]

Home matches are played at Reitz Arena.

Dave's Picks Volume 12 is a three-CD live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It contains the complete concert recorded on November 4, 1977 at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. It was produced as a limited edition of 14,000 numbered copies, and was released by Rhino Records on November 1, 2014. The album also includes over 75 minutes of bonus tracks recorded on November 2, 1977 at a concert at Seneca College in Toronto.

They finished the season 7–23, 3–15 in Patriot League play to finish in last place. They lost in the first round of the Patriot League women's tournament to Holy Cross.

The 2018–19 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, led by eighth-year head coach Matt Langel, played their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 24-11, 13-5 to tie for first place. In the Patriot League tournament, they defeated Boston University, Navy, and Bucknell to win the Patriot League tournament. As a result, they received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the First Round to Tennessee.

The 2018–19 Colgate Raiders women's basketball team represents Colgate University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Raiders, led by third year head coach Bill Cleary, play their home games at Cotterell Court and were members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 12–17, 8–10 in Patriot League play to finish in sixth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League women's tournament to Lehigh.

The 2019–20 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, led by ninth-year head coach Matt Langel, played their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 25–9, 14–4 in Patriot League play to win the Patriot League regular season championship. They defeated Lehigh and Lafayette to reach the championship game of the Patriot League Tournament where they lost to Boston University. As a regular season league champion who failed to win their league tournament, they received an automatic bid to the 2020 National Invitation Tournament. However, the NIT and all other postseason tournaments were cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 1995 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was played at Christl Arena in West Point, New York and Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York after the conclusion of the 1994–95 regular season. Colgate defeated #3 seed Navy, 68–63 in the championship game, to win its first Patriot League Tournament title. The Raiders earned an automatic bid to the 1995 NCAA tournament as #16 seed in the Midwest region.

The 2020–21 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, were led by tenth-year head coach Matt Langel, play their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. With the creation of mini-divisions to cut down on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the North Division. They finished the season 14-2, 11-1 in Patriot League Play to finish as champions of the North Division. They defeated Boston University, Bucknell, and Loyola (MD) to be champions of the Patriot League Tournament. They received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the First Round to Arkansas.

The 2021–22 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, led by 11th-year head coach Matt Langel, played their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 23–12, 16–2 and Patriot League play to finish as regular season champions for the second consecutive year. As the No. 1 seed, they defeated Bucknell, Lehigh, and Navy to win the Patriot League Tournament. They received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. As the No. 14 seed in the Midwest Region, they lost in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to Wisconsin.
