Count Raven are a Swedish doom metal band established in 1989. [1] From 1990 to 1996, the band released four studio albums, then broke up in 1998. [2] In 2003, they reunited and in 2009 released their fifth album, Mammons War.

History

The band, formed in 1987 by vocalist Christian Linderson, guitarist Dan Fondelius, bassist Tommy Eriksson, and drummer Christer Pettersson, was called originally Stormvarning. In 1989, they changed their name to Count Raven, and released their debut album, Storm Warning, a year later. It received positive reviews from the European metal press (4 K's in Kerrang! , 10/10 in Rock Hard , 6/7 in Metal Hammer ). [3]

Linderson then left to join Saint Vitus and Dan "Fodde" Fondelius became the new frontman, beginning with 1992's Destruction of the Void, released via Nuclear Blast Records, [1] to be declared 'Doom Album of the Year' by Rock Hard magazine. [3] The band's third album High on Infinity appeared one year later, after which the band took a three-year break before returning in 1996 with Messiah of Confusion, [1] which dealt with the band's outlook on society and its dubious ways. "The album's name is our bass player's nickname, but when the album began to see the light of day, we thought the title was a good idea. There's a lot of 'messiahs of confusion' out there", drummer Christer Pettersson explained. [3]

In 1998, Count Raven broke up. Dan Fondelius formed a new doom metal band called Doomsday Government, [4] while Eriksson joined Semlah in 2001. In 2003, the trio reformed, broke up again in 2006 and revived instantly with Fondelius at the helm, Fredrik Jansson (ex-Abramis Brama) on bass, and Jens Bock on drums. [2] In 2009, Count Raven's fifth album Mammons War, produced by Zeb King and released by I Hate, came out. The album earned a positive review by Kerrang! which gave it a 4K rating. [5]

Count Raven signed a new record deal with I Hate on 1 February 2019 and released their sixth studio album, The Sixth Storm in 2021.

The Obsessed is an American heavy metal band from Potomac, Maryland, led by Scott "Wino" Weinrich. The band combines elements of doom metal, stoner rock, and punk rock. Formed in 1980, they recorded a few demos and played a handful of live shows until they first split up in 1986 when Weinrich joined as lead vocalist for Saint Vitus, but reformed four years later. After releasing three albums, the Obsessed broke up for a second time in 1995. After briefly reuniting for some shows in 2012 and 2013, the Obsessed announced their third reunion in March 2016.

Saint Vitus is an American doom metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1978. They are considered to be one of the first doom metal bands, and have been labeled as one of the "big four" of that genre, along with Candlemass, Pentagram and Trouble. Having released nine studio albums to date, Saint Vitus never achieved a popular breakthrough, but have exerted great influence on the development of doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock.

Runemagick is a Swedish death/doom band formed in 1990. The band was started by Nicklas "Terror" Rudolfsson under the name Desiderius, which was quickly changed to Runemagic. First, the band consisted solely of Rudolfsson, but he was later joined by Robert "Reaper" Pehrsson. They started out as a pure death metal band but later incorporated doom metal influences, inspired by the likes of Bathory, Treblinka/Tiamat, Celtic Frost, Nihilist/Entombed, and Candlemass.

In the early 1990s Hellhound signed a number of Maryland doom bands such as Internal Void, Iron Man, Revelation, Wretched and Unorthodox. They quickly became a prominent label in the doom metal genre. Some of the Hellhound releases were distributed in the US by Noise Records and Noise began pressing some of the later releases after Hellhound's demise. Noise released a compilation entitled Pure Noise which featured a number of Hellhound bands along with many Noise bands as well. Only a few Hellhound releases were re-released by current labels, such as Southern Lord Records and Japan's Leaf Hound Records.
