Craig Colclough

Craig Colclough is an internationally acclaimed [1] American operatic bass-baritone. Initially trained as a cellist, Colclough started acting in musical theater and comedic improv in high school. Colclough attended the Johnston Center [2] at the University of Redlands, in Redlands, California, where he earned an integrative liberal arts degree followed by a Masters of Music through the University of Redlands Conservatory of Music. Colclough began his career at the Los Angeles Opera.

Career

Colclough completed tenures as both a Florida Grand Opera Young Artist and Filene Young Artist at the Wolf Trap Opera Company in 2013. [3]

The title role in Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth (opera) has served as Colclough’s debut at the Metropolitan Opera, [4] Lyric Opera of Chicago, [5] Bayerische Staatsoper and the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg [6] .Colclough’s Macbeth at the Lyric Opera of Chicago was the company's first production following an 18-month hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. [7]

Throughout his career Colclough has appeared most often at the Los Angeles Opera. Notably [8] as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro and Peter in Hansel and Gretel (opera) .

Additional significant appearances include Telramund in Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Royal Opera House Covent Gardens, Scarpia in Tosca with the Canadian Opera Company and English National Opera, [9] Storyteller in A Flowering Tree with Opera Queensland Australia, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde at the English National Opera, [10] the title role in Don Pasquale at the Minnesota Opera, Arizona Opera and Berkshire Opera Festival [11] and Falstaff (opera) at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen directed by Christoph Waltz. Colclough's European debut was with the English National Opera as Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West in 2014–2015.

Musical theatre credits include Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music at the Riverside Light Opera as well as the title character in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at Opera Saratoga starring alongside Carolee Carmello. [13]

Walter Cassel was an American operatic baritone and actor. He began his career singing on the radio during the mid-1930s and appeared in a couple of Hollywood musical films in the late 1930s. He made his first stage appearances in a handful of Broadway productions during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He began his opera career at the Metropolitan Opera in 1942, and went on to have a long and fruitful association with that house that lasted until his retirement from the stage in 1974. In addition to working with the Met, Cassel was also a regular performer with the New York City Opera between 1948 and 1954 and worked frequently as a freelance artist with important opera companies on the international stage as well as in the United States.

Naděžda Kniplová was a Czech operatic soprano who had an active international career from the 1950s through the 1980s. Kniplová possessed a large voice with a sonorous, metallic, dark timbre that was particularly well suited to the dramatic soprano repertoire. While she was most admired in Czech operas and as Wagnerian heroines, she sang a wide repertoire that also encompassed Italian, Russian, and Hungarian language roles. A fine actress, her performances were praised for their intensity and pathos. However, some critics commented on a certain lack of steadiness or purity in her singing. Her voice is preserved on a number of recordings made on the Supraphon and Decca labels.

Else Gentner-Fischer was a German operatic soprano. Although she appeared in operas internationally, her career was mainly centered at the Oper Frankfurt where she was a resident artist from 1907-1935. She excelled in the dramatic soprano repertoire, drawing particular acclaim for her portrayal of Wagnerian heroines. She was also an exponent of the works of contemporary composers. Her career was cut short in 1935 due to political pressures and prejudice exerted against her for being married to a Jewish man.
