Craig Irvin is an American operatic baritone. Irvin did his undergraduate study at the Simpson College, in Indianola Iowa, before completing his graduate work at The University of Tennessee. During his graduate studies, he performed with the Knoxville Opera as Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and as a soloist in Verdi's Requiem with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in many leading opera houses both nationally and internationally, including premiering the role of Lieutenant Horstmayer in Kevin Puts and Minnesota Opera's acclaimed and Pulitzer Prize winning Silent Night [1] [2] [3] “I’ve had the new-opera experience that no one gets” Irvin is quoted to say by Opera News, in singing the same role multiple times. [4]
Irvin began his career at Orlando Opera in the 2006 season, and continued the following season as a main stage artist. While in Orlando, Irvin also performed the role of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast at Walt Disney World, completing over 700 performances. “I got to be onstage, in front of thousands of people, five days a week, for almost two years,” Irvin says. “And that is not an experience you get - in America - as an opera singer!” [1] [2] [4]
Irvin spent 2008 in residence with Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center. He returned for a second season in 2009–2010. While there he portrayed a number of roles including Zuniga in Carmen, Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly, the title role in The Mikado, and Bartolo in Le Nozze Di Figaro, among others. In 2011, Irvin performed as Lieutenant Horstmayer in the premier of Kevin Puts’ Silent Night at Minnesota Opera. Having said of Silent Night, “It’s the most amazing opera I have ever had a chance to work on.” Irvin describes why he feels that way, citing, “There’s a major battle scene about five minutes into the show that is extremely visceral, both for the action and the music,” He continues, “Ten minutes later, there’s some of the most beautiful music and orchestration I’ve ever heard. You can visualize, just through the music, the sun breaking the crest of the horizon, and the frost on the grass start to melt away, and birds taking off. But it ends darkly, because as the sun comes out, you see all the dead bodies.” [5] [6]
In the 2012–2013 season, Irvin sang in Carmina Burana with the Phoenix Symphony, and debuted at Opera Saratoga as Dick Deadeye in HMS Pinafore, and as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor. [1] In 2013, Irvin played Mandryka in Strauss's Arabella at the Minnesota Opera. [4]
In early 2015 Irvin sang the Pirate King in the Pensacola Opera production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance [7] Also in 2015, Irvin was seen in Sarasota Opera's production of La Bohème as Marcello. [8]
In their review of his role in Utah Opera's 2016 production of Figaro, The Salt Lake Tribune said of Irvin, “Baritone Craig Irvin was a strong foil, playing Count Almaviva as a suave bully who was redeemed by a lightning bolt of compassion at the end of the opera.” [9] And in his role that year at LoftOpera as Macbeth, The Observer commented “As Macbeth, Craig Irvin flaunted a big, steely baritone as striking as his craggy profile.” [10]
Irvin has reprised his premier role of Lieutenant Horstmayer a number of times since his original performance in 2011 at Minnesota Opera, including in 2012 at Opera Philadelphia. Further performances were at Fort Worth Opera and Cincinnati Opera in 2014, Atlanta Opera in 2016, 2019 at Austin Opera, and Utah Opera in 2020. [5] [1] [2] [11] [12] [13] [14] [7]
2017 found Irvin playing Excamillo in Carmen, a role of which the Texas Classical Review stated, “Though each generation finds new secrets in Carmen, Escamillo never changes: he needs a decent dynamic range, a sturdy swagger, and a beautiful, smooth vocal quality, all of which Irvin brought to the table.” [15] Irvin was then described in his role as Dan Packard as “aptly heartless and blustering” in Dinner at Eight, “singing with a big, commanding baritone”. In 2018 Irvin appeared twice at the Wexford Festival Opera, once as Sheriff Jack Rance in La Fanciulla Del West, of which Opera Wire said “Irvin, was very impressive. Stylishly dressed in black, his presence dominated the stage. He acted the role with such conviction that it would be impossible to doubt the malevolence of his intentions.” Continuing, they added “Irvin has a strong baritone with an interestingly colored timbre, which he successfully used to characterize Rance’s sinister nature. He sang with confidence, coated with a vocal swagger that gave him the necessary authority to convince in the role.” [17] Also at the Wexford Festival, Irvin performed Dan Packard in Dinner at Eight. Irvin was honored with the Heinz Rehfuss Singing Actor Award by the Orlando Opera. [1] [2] Irvin was also recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Fourth Annual Excellence in Opera awards by Operavore. [19] He was featured by Barihunks for his Zurga in the 2015 production at Utah Opera of Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, and in 2017 for his role at Minnesota Opera in Dinner at Eight. [7] [20]
In 2020, Irvin joined Tenor Fernando Varela and Tenor Devin Eatmon to form The Serenad3. Their first album, Christmas Serenade was released as an EP in late November.
A tenor is a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. Composers typically write music for this voice in the range from the second B below middle C to the G above middle C (i.e. B2 to G4) in choral music, and from the second B flat below middle C to the C above middle C (B♭2 to C5) in operatic music, but the range can extend at either end. Subtypes of tenor include the leggero tenor, lyric tenor, spinto tenor, dramatic tenor, heldentenor, and tenor buffo or spieltenor.

La fanciulla del West is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West by the American author David Belasco. Fanciulla followed Madama Butterfly, which was also based on a Belasco play. The opera has fewer of the show-stopping highlights that characterize Puccini's other works, but is admired for its impressive orchestration and for a score that is more melodically integrated than is typical of his previous work. Fanciulla displays influences from composers Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss, without being in any way imitative. Similarities between the libretto and the work of Richard Wagner have also been found though some attribute this more to the original plot of the play, and have asserted that the opera remains quintessentially Italian.

Nathan T. Gunn is an American operatic baritone who performs regularly around the world. He is an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he is currently a professor of voice.
Frank Guarrera was an Italian-American lyric baritone who enjoyed a long and distinguished career at the Metropolitan Opera, singing with the company for a total of 680 performances. He performed 35 different roles at the Met, mostly from the Italian and French repertories, from 1948 through 1976. His most frequent assignments at the house were as Escamillo in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Marcello in Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème, Valentin in Charles Gounod's Faust, and Ping in Puccini's Turandot. He was also an admired interpreter of Mozart roles, establishing himself in the parts of both Guglielmo and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte and Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro. Most of the roles he portrayed were from the lyric repertoire, such as the title role in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, but he also sang some heavier roles at the Met like Amonasro in Aïda, Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West and Il conte di Luna in Il trovatore.

Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo has sung 151 roles in Italian, French, German, English, Spanish and Russian. His main repertoire however is Italian, French, and German. Domingo currently continues to add more operas to his repertoire. Since 2009, he has moved substantially into the baritone repertoire, especially focusing on Verdi baritone roles. In 2015, he made his most recent debuts as Macbeth at the Berlin State Opera, Don Carlo in Ernani at the Metropolitan Opera, and Gianni Schicchi at the Los Angeles Opera. Tim Page, a Pulitzer Prize-winner for music criticism, described Domingo in a 1996 Washington Post article as "the most versatile, intelligent and altogether accomplished operatic tenor now before the public".
Anthony Michaels-Moore is an English operatic baritone and the first British winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition. Michaels-Moore has since performed in many of the world's major opera houses across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. He has distinguished himself as a specialist in Verdi and Puccini roles, most renowned for his portrayals of Falstaff, Nabucco, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Iago in Otello, Germont in La traviata, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, and Scarpia in Tosca. In addition to the standard repertoire, he has sung and recorded the baritone roles of some of the less-known 19th Century Italian operas, as well as the popular English art song cycles by Stanford and Vaughan Williams.

Fernando Varela is an American operatic and classical crossover tenor, who has performed in staged operas, as a member of the classical crossover trio Forte Tenors, and as a solo artist. As a solo artist, he has toured internationally with David Foster, and also tours independently, having completed a European tour in 2016. In 2017, Varela debuted his PBS special "Fernando Varela: Coming Home", performed at the Grammy Museum Gala honoring David Foster, and joined Sarah Brightman on the Royal Christmas Gala tour November - December, 2017. From 2018 into 2020, Varela has toured extensively with David Foster, and has participated in several charitable events.

Craig Colclough is an internationally acclaimed American operatic bass-baritone. Initially trained as a cellist, Colclough started acting in musical theater and comedic improv in high school. Colclough attended the Johnston Center at the University of Redlands, in Redlands, California, where he earned an integrative liberal arts degree followed by a Masters of Music through the University of Redlands Conservatory of Music. Colclough began his career at the Los Angeles Opera.

Devin Eatmon is an American operatic tenor, and winner of a Harold S. Schwartz Music Scholarship. Eatmon grew up in The Villages, Florida, and sang with The Opera Club of the Villages and the Central Florida Lyric Opera. His summer performances included Opera in the Ozarks (2015) and Aspen Music Festival. He studied vocal performance at Florida State University, where he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees, and acted as a graduate teaching assistant. Selected as one of Opera Colorado's 2020-21 Artists in Residence, he will be performing several productions, once the season is underway.
