Biography

Barbosa was born in Adamantina, Brazil, on October 11, 1976, to Antonio Dias Barbosa and Maria do Carmo Borro, and attended the local schools there. [2] He earned his licentiate in philosophy at the University of the Sacred Heart in Bauru, [3] completed a degree in theology at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology in Belo Horizonte between 2005 and 2007, [4] and attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, completing a master's degree in psychology. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bauru on December 22, 2007, [3] by Luiz Antônio Guedes  [ pt ], Bishop of Bauru. [2]

Beginning in 2008 he studied at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, earning a licentiate in theology in 2011 and then his doctorate in sacred theology in 2019 [5] with a dissertation titled "Speaking rightly about Christian hope and the resurrection of the body". [2] [6]

He was chaplain to the Portuguese-Brazilian community of the archdiocese from 2008 to 2019. With his studies completed, he served in 2019 as parochial vicar of two Cambridge parishes, Saint Anthony of Padua [lower-alpha 1] and Saint Francis of Assisi, and then of three parishes in Lowell in 2019/20: Holy Family, Immaculate Conception, and Saint Anthony of Padua. In 2020 he joined the faculties of the Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston and of Saint John's Seminary in Brighton. [5]

He was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Boston on November 5, 2021. [2] On May 30, 2023, Cardinal Séan O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, appointed Barbosa episcopal vicar for the central region of the archdiocese, which made him as well a member of the "cardinal's cabinet", of the priests' council, and of the archdiocesan board of consultors. He was also named Secretary for Evangelization and Discipleship. [8]

Episcopal career

Pope Francis appointed Barbosa an auxiliary bishop of Boston on December 9, 2023. [3] His episcopal consecration occurred on February 3, 2024. [9] His appointment makes him the second youngest bishop in the United States [10] and the second native of Brazil to become a bishop in the U.S., after Edgar Moreira da Cunha, Bishop of Fall River.
