According to Gerald A. Kerkut the species is might be similar to Icerya purchasi . [2]

As of 2008 it was one of the three insect species where hermaphroditism occurs. [3] All females in this species become hermaphrodites. Males at times come from unfertilized eggs. [4]

Adult females typically have soft bodies and no limbs, and are concealed underneath domed scales, extruding quantities of wax for protection. Scale insects are herbivores, piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts and remaining in one place, feeding on sap. The insects often have a mutualistic relationship with ants, which feed on the honeydew and protect them from predators. There are about 8,000 described species.

Dioecy is a characteristic of certain species that have distinct unisexual individuals, each producing either male or female gametes, either directly or indirectly. Cockerell named at least 5,500 species and varieties of bees and almost 150 genera and subgenera, representing over a quarter of all species of bees known during his lifetime. In addition to his extensive studies of bees, he published papers on scale insects, slugs, moths, fish scales, fungi, roses and other flowers, mollusks, and a wide variety of other plants and animals.
