Crystal Kite Award

The Crystal Kite Award (also known as 'Crystal Kite Members Choice Award) is given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) each year to recognize great books from the 70 SCBWI regions around the world. Along with the SCBWI Golden Kite Awards, the Crystal Kite Awards are chosen by other children's book writers and illustrators, making them the only peer-given awards in publishing for young readers.

Contents

Each SCBWI member votes for their favorite book from a nominated author in their region that was published in the previous calendar year.

Susanne Julia Gervay is an Australian author. Her younger fiction in the I Am Jack series are rites-of-passage books focusing on school bullying reaching adults and children. The first instalment has been adapted into a play by the award-winning Monkey Baa Theatre for Young People. I Am Jack is the first of four books including Super Jack, Always Jack and Being Jack. Her powerful realistic young adult literature includes Butterflies, The Cave and That's Why I Wrote This Song which is a collaborative work with her teenage daughter Tory who wrote and sings the songs that are part of the book and downloadable from her website.

Katrina Germein is an Australian early childhood teacher and author of children's picture books. In 1997 while working in a remote Aboriginal community as a teacher Germein wrote her first two picture books about her experiences. By 2023 Germein had written over 20 picture books with some published internationally.

Jess Racklyeft is an Australian illustrator and author of children's picture books, and creator of artistic works including paintings, prints and stationery. Racklyeft previously worked in publishing before becoming a full-time illustrator.

Mandy Foot is a South Australian based illustrator of children's picture books, graphic design and artwork. She has won a number of awards including a Crystal Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a Karajia Award, the Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children's Literature.
