Cyborg Hunter is a horizontal scrolling, action video game released in 1988 [4] [ unreliable source ] on the Sega Master System. It was both developed and published by Sega in Japan and Europe, and published by Activision for the North American market. [5]
Set in the year 2242, the player controls Paladin, the galaxy's toughest bounty hunter. Cyborgs are about to take complete control of the universe under the direction of Vipron, their evil leader. The player is sent to the cyborg fortress to get rid of all the chief cyborgs in each of the seven areas. They are not alone in this mission. They also have Adina, their contact back at headquarters. The game screen is divided into three sections. This includes a first-person view of the map, in which the player can see objects that are coming their way. There are two types of objects: red objects indicate the lower cyborgs, while white ones indicate the chief cyborgs. Next to it is a map of the area, the player's life and psycho power count. Below these is the main action screen, which is a side-on perspective of Paladin negotiating the environment and taking on enemies.
In each of these seven areas, there are several floors which can be reached via the elevator. At the beginning of the game, the player's only weapons are their fists, but weapons can be collected throughout each area, which include a psycho punch, a ray gun, a light gun, and bombs. Power-ups like extra life and psycho power can also be collected. If the player uses the psycho punch or psycho gun, their psycho power gets depleted, and when it is empty, they must stock up on some more. They can also get shields that will protect them from laser beams, and jet engines so that the player can fly over hazards. In some areas, they defeat a boss which leaves an ID card, which the player can use to access other areas of the fortress. The equipment menu is accessed using the A or B buttons on the second controller.
The story is advanced by simple cutscenes showing Adina talking, accompanied by text below. Adina also provides gameplay tips at pre-determined points in the game.
The game was originally developed as a title called Chōon Senshi Borgman (超音戦士ボーグマン), [6] [ unreliable source ] and was based on an animated TV series of the same name. For non-Japanese territories the game was marketed as Cyborg Hunter. [7] [ unreliable source ] The Japanese version of the game has a storyline more resemblant of the anime series. The original game was designed by Hirohiko Yoneda [8] [ unreliable source ] who would later work on Shenmue , [9] and Yasushi Yamaguchi [8] who is also credited for design on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . Cyborg Hunter was labelled as unoriginal, [11] but still "addictive and challenging". [11] Computer and Video Games magazine rated the game at 76%. [11]
Game Freaks 365 called the game easy as the player can "waste the majority of cyborgs in a few hits", [12] and lacking in creativity. The reviewer gave the game 6/10. Retrospective reviews have compared the game to Metroid . [13]
A platformer is a subgenre of action game in which the core objective is to move the player character between points in an environment. Platform games are characterized by levels with uneven terrain and suspended platforms that require jumping and climbing to traverse. Other acrobatic maneuvers may factor into the gameplay, such as swinging from vines or grappling hooks, jumping off walls, gliding through the air, or bouncing from springboards or trampolines.
Miles "Tails" Prower is a character created by Japanese game designer Yasushi Yamaguchi. Part of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, he is the first character to consistently appear by Sonic's side in the series, appearing in nearly every mainline and spin-off game since his debut. His role as Sonic's best friend and sidekick is analogous to Luigi from the Mario series. The name "Miles Prower" is a pun on "miles per hour", a reference to the famed speed of Sonic the Hedgehog. Prower is a two-tailed anthropomorphic fox cub, hence the nickname.
Metroid II: Return of Samus is a 1991 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. The first Metroid game for a handheld game console, it was released in North America in November 1991 and in Japan and Europe in 1992. The game follows bounty hunter Samus Aran on her mission to eradicate the Metroids from their home planet, SR388, before the Space Pirates can obtain them. Players must find and exterminate the Metroids to progress.
Bio-ship Paladin, known in Japan as Space Battleship Gomora, is a 1990 horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game released by UPL and distributed by Sammy Corporation for North American manufacture. It was later ported to the Sega Mega Drive. While the game is essentially a standard horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up, it has an innovation that makes it unique in the genre. The player flies a spaceship which has the standard forward guns to be found in all horizontal scrollers, but it also possesses a weapon that can be manually targeted with a crosshair, in the same manner as in the game Missile Command. This allows the player to fire in any direction with pinpoint accuracy, and adds an extra level of strategy to the game. The game saw an almost arcade perfect port on the Mega Drive, albeit with a few changes that actually enhanced the look of the game such as added parallax scrolling backgrounds in the second level. It would eventually see a worldwide re-release as part of the Arcade Archives series for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on August 5, 2021.
Metroid: Zero Mission is a 2004 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. It is a remake of the original Metroid (1986), and retells the story with updated visuals and gameplay.
Sunset Riders is a side-scrolling run and gun video game developed and released by Konami as an arcade video game in 1991. It is set in the American Old West, where the player(s) take control of bounty hunters who are seeking the rewards offered for various criminals.
DoDonPachi is a vertically-scrolling bullet hell shoot' em up developed by Cave and published by Atlus in 1997. It was the second game developed by Cave, and the sixth on Cave's first-generation arcade hardware. As with its predecessor DonPachi, the title is both a Japanese term for expressing the sound of gunfire, and a term that relates to bees. The sequel to this game is DoDonPachi II, which was made by a different developer. The original developer later released its own sequel, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou.
Contra: Hard Corps, released as Contra: The Hard Corps in Japan and Probotector in Europe and Australia, is a run and gun video game released by Konami for the Sega Genesis in 1994, making it the first game in the Contra series released for a Sega platform.
Zillion, known as Akai Koudan Zillion in Japan, is a space adventure platform video game developed by Sega and designed for the Master System as a companion tie-in for Tatsunoko Production's Zillion anime series in 1987.
Crime Patrol is a live-action LaserDisc video game released by American Laser Games in 1993. American Laser Games released a sequel, Crime Patrol 2: Drug Wars later that year.
Rolling Thunder 2 is a run and gun arcade game developed and released by Namco for the Namco System 2 hardware in 1991. The game is the sequel to 1986's Rolling Thunder, retaining the same gameplay of its predecessor but adding cooperative gameplay for two players and improved graphics. Unlike the original, which was based in 1968, Rolling Thunder 2 has a more contemporary setting to go with its more futuristic design, as well as an optionally playable female character. A port for the Sega Genesis was released the same year. Both the Mega Drive port and the original arcade game were released for the Wii Virtual Console on December 4, 2007, and October 27, 2009, respectively. On May 25, 2023, the arcade version of the game got ported as part of the Arcade Archives series.
Run Saber is a side-scrolling action game developed by Horisoft and published by Atlus for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was released in North America on June 8, 1993, and in Europe in 1993. Run Saber features side-scrolling fighting as the two main heroes, Allen and Sheena, the Run Sabers, fight to save the planet. The gameplay is similar to Strider, Valis and some elements of Psycho Dream.
Crack Down (クラックダウン) is a run and gun arcade game released by Sega in 1989 and ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in North America by Sage's Creation. It was also ported and released to a number of home computer platforms by U.S. Gold.
Yasushi Yamaguchi is a Japanese game designer and artist. He designed the character Miles "Tails" Prower in an internal contest hosted by Sonic Team. He originally named the character "Miles Prower", however SEGA wanted to call the character "Tails". SEGA and Yamaguchi reached a compromise on his name, with "Miles Prower" being the character's full legal name and "Tails" being his nickname.
Crypt Killer is a 1995 arcade video game produced by Konami. It was also released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation home consoles, and in Japan for Microsoft Windows. The Saturn version makes use of the Saturn's various light guns, while the PlayStation version is compatible with the Naki Lunar Gun and the Konami Justifier. The game's scenery and characters are all 3D polygon models, while most of the enemies and their projectiles are 2D sprites.
Samus Aran is the protagonist of the video game series Metroid by Nintendo. She was created by the Japanese video game designer Makoto Kano and was introduced as the player character in the original 1986 game Metroid.
Givro Corporation was a Japanese video game development company founded in 1989 in Tokyo, Japan by Takashi Yoneda, who was previously employed by Technos Japan and Enix. The company was originally established under the name Almanic Corporation, which it operated under for a few years before changing its corporate name in 1995. Givro would go on to produce games for home consoles such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, 32X, Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn. Givro released their final game in late 1997 and quietly dissolved at the end of the following year.
Laser Ghost (レーザーゴースト) is a horror-themed light gun shooter arcade video game released by Sega in 1990. The game is patterned after the films Ghostbusters and Poltergeist III, casting the player as a ghost hunter. There are three mounted guns set up on the cabinet, representing the three members of a ghost hunting team. The game puts the players in the role of Bill, Max and Carol, who must rescue a little girl kidnapped by a blue gargoyle, as well as protect the city from the ghost menace. A Master System game with the same title was released in 1991 exclusively for Europe, but was not based on the arcade original.
Jikō Wakusei Gdleen, known simply as Gdleen, is a Japanese science fiction light novel series written by Yuto Ramon and illustrated by Hitoshi Yoneda. The first novel in the series, subtitled Kamigami no Mikotachi, was published in September 1989 by Kadokawa Shoten under the Sneaker Bunko imprint. It was adapted into an original video animation and released in 1990.
Straight off you will be sent off to Sector A in search of shield that will help you get through the laser barriers that block your way into zone B, and the game continues in a similar fashion until you have retrieved jet packs, laser pistols, light guns and ever more powerful additions to your growing arsenal. It's a truly organic process that is reminiscent of Metroid but pulled off with so much more panache and graphical flair.
