Cynthia J. Atman is an American industrial engineer focusing on engineering education and human-centered design. She is Mitchell T. and Lella Blanche Bowie Endowed Chair in Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington.
Atman majored in industrial engineering at West Virginia University, graduating in 1979. She earned a master's degree in industrial and systems engineering at Ohio State University in 1983, and completed a PhD in engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University in 1990. Her dissertation, Network Structures as a Foundation for Risk Communication: An Investigation of Structure and Format Differences, was supervised by Baruch Fischhoff. [1]
After postdoctoral research supported by the American Association for the Advancement of Science at the United States Agency for International Development, working on engineering education in developing countries, she became an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991. After being promoted to associate professor, she moved to the University of Washington Department of Industrial Engineering in 1998, and became director of the Center for Engineering Learning & Teaching, which she continues to direct. In 2003, she was promoted to full professor and became director of the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education; she remained its director until 2010. She was given the Mitchell T. and Lella Blanche Bowie Endowed Chair in 2006, and moved from Industrial Engineering to Human-Centered Design & Engineering in 2009. From 2014 to 2018 she co-directed the Consortium to Promote Reflection in Engineering Education. [1]
Atman has won numerous best paper awards. [1] She was the 2002 recipient of the Chester F. Carlson Award for Innovation in Engineering Education of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), [2] and the 2017 recipient of the Alfred N. Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Communication of the IEEE Professional Communication Society. [3]
She was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006. [4] She is also a Fellow of the ASEE and was a distinguished speaker for the ASEE in 2024. [5]

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is a non-profit member association, founded in 1893, dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and engineering technology education. The purpose of ASEE is the advancement of education in all of its functions which pertain to engineering and allied branches of science and technology, including the processes of teaching and learning, counseling, research, extension services and public relations. ASEE administers the engineering technology honor society Tau Alpha Pi.

J. David Irwin is an American engineering educator and author of popular textbooks in electrical engineering and related areas. He is the Earle C. Williams Eminent Scholar and former Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Head at Auburn University. Irwin is one of the longest serving Department Heads of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the world, having been appointed to lead the Department at Auburn in 1973. He had also served as President of the ECE honor society Eta Kappa Nu; President of the US National Electrical Engineering Department Head Association; and President of two IEEE technical societies, on Industrial Electronics and on Education.

Baruch Fischhoff is an American academic who is the Howard Heinz University Professor in the Institute for Strategy and Technology and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. He is an elected member of the (US) National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine. His research focuses on judgment and decision making, including risk perception and risk analysis. He has numerous academic books and articles. Fischhoff completed his graduate education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the supervision of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky.

(Zoya) Popović is a Yugoslav-American electrical engineer, a distinguished professor and Lockheed Martin Endowed Chair in RF Engineering in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research involves radio and microwave engineering, including wireless communication, millimeter wave scanners, radio frequency power transmission, and the use of rectennas to harvest radio-frequency energy.

Andrea Goldsmith is an American electrical engineer and the Dean of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University. She is also the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton. She was previously the Stephen Harris Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, as well as a faculty affiliate at the Stanford Neurosciences Institute. Her interests are in the design, analysis and fundamental performance limits of wireless systems and networks, and in the application of communication theory and signal processing to neuroscience. She also co-founded and served as chief technology officer of Plume WiFi and Quantenna Communications. Since 2021, she has been a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
