Daisy Archer was a schooner of the Maryland State Fisheries Force converted at some time before 1917 into a motorboat. The vessel entered into the United States Navy under an agreement with Maryland for joint state and federal service during World War I as a patrol boat with identification ID-1283 from 1917 to 1918. [1] [2]
In 1891 the schooner, part of what was then nicknamed the "Oyster Police Navy," supported a scientific survey of southern Maryland sponsored by Johns Hopkins University, Maryland Agricultural College and the U.S. Geological Survey. The lead vessel was the force's steamer Governor P. F. Thomas with the force's schooners Daisy Archer and Folly in support. The survey's scope ranged from natural resources to archaeology. [3]
During an extreme cold period in January 1893, with Annapolis iced in and ice extending across the upper Chesapeake Bay, many of the force's schooners were frozen in ice. The force's steamers, Governor R. M. McLane and Governor P. F. Thomas, along with tugs broke ice keeping a narrow channel in Annapolis clear and then carried supplies and ammunition to schooners trapped in ice. Governor P. F. Thomas brought in the captain of Daisy Archer in for supplies and then returned him to the schooner in West River. [4]
Daisy Archer was acquired by the Navy from the Conservation Commission of Maryland under a contract between the state and Navy in 1917. [1] [2] The Fishery Force vessels operated in a dual role of state fishery enforcement and Navy patrol from August 1917 to November 1918. [1] She was placed in service in the 5th Naval District, where she engaged in patrol and transport duties. She was returned to her owner on 27 November 1918. [2] The vessel, along with the older Fishery Force schooners Julia Hamilton, Helen Baughman, Bessie Jones and Anna B. Smith were then sold by the Commission. [1]
USS Delaware was a steamer acquired by the Union Navy for use during the American Civil War. She had a very active naval career as a gunboat for over three years, and after the war served as a revenue cutter for over 37 years. The steamer was sold to the private sector in 1903, and disappeared from shipping registers in 1919.
USRC Walter Forward was a schooner constructed for service with the United States Revenue Marine. She was more commonly known as USRC Forward. Forward served with the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy in Mexican waters during the Mexican–American War and was commended for her actions during the Tabasco River landings by Commodore Matthew C. Perry, U.S. Navy. After the war, she was transferred to the U.S. Coast Survey for a short time as USCS Walter Forward before being returned to the Revenue Marine for service during the 1850s and the American Civil War.
USRC Seminole was a 188 ft (57 m), 845-ton United States Revenue Cutter Service steamer constructed by the Columbian Iron Works in Baltimore, Maryland for $141,000. She was commissioned in 1900 and saw service through 1934, when she was transferred to the Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) is the law enforcement arm of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), tasked with enforcing laws on the state's public lands and waterways, protecting fish and wildlife, and leading search and rescue efforts. The Natural Resources Police is also the state's maritime homeland security agency.
Murray was a fifty-five foot motorboat, part of the Maryland State Fishery Force, owned by the Conservation Commission of Maryland operating out of River Springs, Maryland, a landing in St. Mary's county, in the charge of Deputy Commander M. R. Bailey. The boat was built in 1915 by Chance Marine Construction Company at Annapolis, Maryland. Though Murray was given the Section Patrol number (SP-1438) while serving both the Conservation Commission and Navy during World War I there is no mention in the Navy records of a commissioned status.
USRC Onondaga was an Algonquin-class cutter built for the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service for service on the Great Lakes. Because of the Spanish–American War, she was cut in half shortly before completion and transported to Ogdensburg, New York for service on the Atlantic coast although the war ended before she could be put into service. After the formation of the United States Coast Guard in 1915 she became USCGC Onondaga. She served as a patrol vessel at various Atlantic coast ports before World War I and unlike most Coast Guard cutters during World War I, she remained under the control of the Commandant of the Coast Guard. After the war she patrolled for a brief time based at New London, Connecticut before being decommissioned in 1923.
USRC Mohawk, was a steel steam powered revenue cutter built for the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service by William R. Trigg Company at Richmond, Virginia. Her primary duties in the Revenue Cutter Service and Coast Guard were assisting vessels in distress and enforcing navigational laws as well as a derelict destroyer. Mohawk was sunk after a collision with another vessel in October 1917.
Severn was a forty-foot motorboat, part of the Maryland State Fishery Force, owned by the Conservation Commission of Maryland operating out of Wittman, Maryland in the charge of Deputy Commander George O. Haddaway. The boat had been purchased by the Commission in 1918, decked over with a pilot house added. It was powered by a 25-horsepower Palmer engine.
Frolic was a Maryland State Oyster Police Force schooner, part of the force established to enforce state conservation laws designed to protect Maryland's oyster resources when out of state, often New England, dredgers began destroying reefs in the Chesapeake Bay. Later local opposition to licenses turned to open "warfare" in the "oyster wars" when a fleet of state vessels fought "oyster pirates" in armed conflicts. Frolic was built in 1884. The schooner was assigned to Queen Anne's County, Maryland in 1902 and later to the Commission's Second District which included Eastern Bay, and the Miles and Wye Rivers.
Nettie, was a forty-one foot motorboat, part of the Maryland State Fishery Force, owned by the Conservation Commission of Maryland operating out of Solomons, Maryland, Maryland, in the charge of Deputy Commander Andrew I. Johnson. The boat was built in 1912 for the Commission.
Governor R. M. McLane, was a steamboat built in 1884 that served the state of Maryland as an enforcement and survey vessel.
Acushnet – a steel-hulled revenue cutter – was launched on 16 May 1908 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.; sponsored by Miss Alayce Duff; and commissioned at Baltimore on 6 November 1908. She saw service as a United States Revenue Cutter Service cutter, a U.S. Navy fleet tug, and as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. She was taken out of service 8 January 1946.
The action of 9 November 1822 was a naval battle fought between the United States Navy schooner USS Alligator and a squadron of three pirate schooners off the coast of Cuba during the Navy's West Indies anti-piracy operation. Fifteen leagues from Matanzas, Cuba, a large band of pirates captured several vessels and held them for ransom. Upon hearing of the pirate attacks, Alligator under Lieutenant William Howard Allen rushed to the scene to rescue the vessels and seize the pirates.

St. Mary's was a forty-nine foot motorboat, part of the Maryland State Fishery Force, owned by the Conservation Commission of Maryland operating out of Wynne, Maryland in the charge of Deputy Commander A. P. Cullinson. The boat was built in 1912 by Ruark of Hooper's Island, Maryland for the Commission.
