The Dalle Molle Institute for Semantic and Cognitive Studies (Italian : Istituto Dalle Molle per gli studi semantici e cognitivi or ISSCO) is a research institute in Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded in Lugano in 1972 by Angelo Dalle Molle through the Fondation Dalle Molle, to conduct research into the application of artificial intelligence to linguistics, cognitive science and semantics with the aim of developing systems for automated translation. Since 1976 it has been a part of the Faculté de Traduction et d'Interprétation, the faculty of translation and interpreting, of the University of Geneva. [1] [2]

ISSCO is one of four Swiss research organisations founded by the Dalle Molle foundation, of which three are in the field of artificial intelligence.

Natural language processing Field of computer science and linguistics

Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of linguistics, computer science, and artificial intelligence concerned with the interactions between computers and human language, in particular how to program computers to process and analyze large amounts of natural language data. The goal is a computer capable of "understanding" the contents of documents, including the contextual nuances of the language within them. The technology can then accurately extract information and insights contained in the documents as well as categorize and organize the documents themselves.

Università della Svizzera italiana

The Università della Svizzera italiana, sometimes referred to as the University of Lugano, in English-speaking contexts, is a public Swiss university established in 1995, with campuses in Lugano, Mendrisio and Bellinzona. USI is the only university in Switzerland where the official language is Italian, but many of its programs are in English. It counts four Faculties at the Lugano campus, and the Academy of Architecture at the Mendrisio campus. Affiliated to USI, since 2010, are the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) and, from 2017, the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR), both located in the Bellinzona. As of 2020 is ranked 273° in the 2020–2021 QS World University Rankings.

The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to artificial intelligence:

In linguistics, statistical semantics applies the methods of statistics to the problem of determining the meaning of words or phrases, ideally through unsupervised learning, to a degree of precision at least sufficient for the purpose of information retrieval.

Cognitive philology is the science that studies written and oral texts as the product of human mental processes. Studies in cognitive philology compare documentary evidence emerging from textual investigations with results of experimental research, especially in the fields of cognitive and ecological psychology, neurosciences and artificial intelligence. "The point is not the text, but the mind that made it". Cognitive Philology aims to foster communication between literary, textual, philological disciplines on the one hand and researches across the whole range of the cognitive, evolutionary, ecological and human sciences on the other.
