Damian Francis Hale (born 28 December 1969) is a former Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives,representing the Division of Solomon from 2007 to 2010. He moved to the Northern Territory in 1974 and grew up in Maningrida,Katherine and Darwin,with his teacher parents,Bob and Bev Hale.
While growing up he was actively involved in sports,representing the Northern Territory in rugby league and Australian rules football. [1] He later coached St Mary's Football Club to three premierships (2003-5 [2] ) in the Northern Territory Football League. He has five children. [1]
Hale won the marginal seat of Solomon for the Australian Labor Party at the 2007 Australia federal election,defeating sitting Country Liberal Party member Dave Tollner. [3] Hale won an extremely close preselection process which included a letter of support from Labor leader Kevin Rudd despite Rudd having never met Hale. [4]
In June 2007 Hale was involved in an altercation with Fremantle Football Club player Chris Tarrant in a popular Darwin nightspot. Hale received a black eye when he was struck by Tarrant after intervening when the inebriated Tarrant exposed his buttocks to a female colleague of Hale. [5] [6]
Hale contested the 2016 Northern Territory election in the seat of Blain,which had been vacated by Nathan Barrett. He finished first on the primary vote,ahead of former Country Liberal Party Chief Minister Terry Mills,who ran for his old seat as an independent. However,despite the massive Labor wave that swept through Darwin/Palmerston,Mills defeated Hale on CLP preferences. [7]
The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia,the two partners in the federal coalition.
Clare Majella Martin is a former Australian journalist and politician. She was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in a shock by-election win in 1995. She was appointed Opposition Leader in 1999,and won a surprise victory at the 2001 territory election,becoming the first Labor Party (ALP) and first female Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. At the 2005 election,she led Territory Labor to the second-largest majority government in the history of the Territory,before resigning as Chief Minister on 26 November 2007.
Denis Gabriel Burke is a former Australian politician. A former Australian Army officer,he served as a Country Liberal Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2005. He spent two years as Chief Minister after succeeding Shane Stone,but oversaw the CLP's defeat at the 2001 election,ending 27 years of continuous CLP government in the Northern Territory. Burke later served as Opposition Leader from 2001 to 2003 before being toppled,but was re-elected as leader in 2005. He subsequently took the party to its largest-ever defeat at the 2005 election,culminating in the shock loss of his own seat.
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members,each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system,having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election,but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024.
David William Tollner is an Australian politician. He was the Country Liberal Party member for Solomon in the Australian House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007,and then served in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly as the member for Fong Lim from 2008 to 2016. He was the Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory under chief minister Adam Giles from 2013 to 2014. During his time in federal parliament,he sat with the Liberal Party.
Chris Tarrant is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club and the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He announced at the end of the 2010 AFL season that he would return to Melbourne for personal reasons and would not extend his contract with Fremantle for the 2011 season. He returned to the Collingwood Football Club via a trade. He made his name as a key forward,but upon his move to Fremantle in 2007,Tarrant found a new position in the backline. Tarrant was noted for his spectacular high marking,athleticism and pace on a lead.
A general election was held in the Northern Territory,Australia,on 18 June 2005. The centre-left Labor Party,led by Chief Minister Clare Martin,won a second term with a landslide victory,winning six of the ten seats held by the opposition Country Liberal Party in the 25-member Northern Territory Legislative Assembly,bringing their total to 19. It was the second largest victory in any Northern Territory election. The only larger majority in the history of the Territory was in the first election,in 1974. In that contest,the CLP won 17 of the 19 seats in the chamber,and faced only two independents as opposition.
Blain is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1997 and is named after Adair Blain,the second member for the federal Northern Territory electorate,and the only Australian sitting federal MP to ever become a prisoner of war. Blain is an urban electorate,covering 4 km²and taking in Palmerston suburbs of Bellamack and Woodroffe,and most of the suburb of Rosebery and a small section of the suburb of Moulden. There were 5,695 people enrolled within the electorate as of August 2020.
The Division of Solomon is an Australian Electoral Division in the Northern Territory. It is largely coextensive with the Darwin/Palmerston metropolitan area. The only other division in the territory,the Division of Lingiari,covers the remainder of the territory.
