Dan Smith OBE (born 17 September 1951) is a British author,cartographer and peace researcher. He is currently the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Smith was Director of Peace Research Institute Oslo from 1993 to 2001,the Secretary General of the independent peacebuilding organisation International Alert and Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Manchester.
He studied English Literature in the University of Cambridge in 1973. After graduation,he worked for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament before taking up research on UK defence policies in 1976. He was a fellow first of the Richardson Institute for Conflict and Peace Research (located at that time in London) and then of the Department of Economics at Birkbeck College in London.
During the 1980s Smith worked as a freelance researcher and writer. In 1989 he became co-director of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam,becoming its sole director in 1991,and then moving to Oslo where he was Director of the international Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) from 1993 to 2001. [1] In 2001 he held a brief fellowship at the Norwegian Nobel Institute [2] and in 2003 at the Hellenic Foundation for Foreign and European Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens.
Smith was the Secretary General of International Alert between December 2003 and August 2015. [3] [4] [5]
In 2013 Smith was appointed part-time Professor of Peace and Conflict at the University of Manchester’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute. [6]
In September 2015,Smith left International Alert and became the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). [7] [8]
Dan Smith was nominated by the UK government and appointed by the UN Secretary-General to be a member of the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Advisory Group in 2007,and became Chairman of the group for 2010 through 2011,when he stood down. [9]
He was Chairman of the Board of the London-based NGO Institute for War and Peace Reporting from 1993 until 2006. [10]

Johan Vincent Galtung is a Norwegian sociologist who is the principal founder of the discipline of peace and conflict studies. He was the main founder of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) in 1959 and served as its first director until 1970. He also established the Journal of Peace Research in 1964.

He was director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO)'s Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW),which was a Norwegian Center of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway for a twelve-year period 2002-2013. He is currently a Research Professor at PRIO,a Guest Researcher at ESOP in the Department of Economics at the University in Oslo and also holds a professorship in the Department of Political science at the University of Oslo. Syse also teaches at the Norwegian Defence University College,BI Norwegian Business School,MF Norwegian School of Theology,the University of Oslo,and other institutions of higher learning,and he is Chief Editor of the Journal of Military Ethics,a peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor &Francis.

Florian Krampe is a German/Swedish political scientist and international relations scholar at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).[2] He is best known for his work on climate-related security risks,Environmental Peacebuilding,and the governance of natural resources after armed conflict. He also serves as Affiliated Researcher at the Research School for International Water Cooperation at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University. Between 2020 and 2022 Krampe was cross appointed Specially Appointed Professor at the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability at Hiroshima University,Japan.
Jason T. Miklian is an American and Norwegian development studies scholar and author. He is a Senior Researcher of business and development at the Centre for Development and the Environment at the University of Oslo. Miklian is known for his scholarship and commentary on the role of the private sector in conflict and fragile state settings and on South Asia politics.
