Dance Valley ("The Woodstock of Dance") is an annual dance music festival organised by United Dance Company (UDC) in the summer in Spaarnwoude, Netherlands. The first edition was in 1995 when 8,000 people attended (and in 2001 90,000 visitors). Dance Valley grew rapidly, both in duration and number of visitors.

History

The idea for a dance music festival in daylight was a revolutionary concept in the early nineties and it took the organizers several years before they made it a reality. After trying to get funding via the largest concert organizer in The Netherlands Mojo (now LiveNation Netherlands), they raised the money independently and organised their first festival in 1995. 2005 was the first time the event lasted 3 days in the weekend with camping available for the concertgoers at the campsite. It rained. A record-breaking 53,000 people attended that year. There were some big changes to the festival in 2006. Traditionally held on the first weekend of August, due to colliding with another festival UDC (the Dance Valley management company) brought the festival forward two weeks to 14–16 July. While this had little effect in terms of sales it did affect the last two hours of the festival when sunlight was still visible on the horizon. This in turn affected the use of lighting with the lasers not being switched on until later. Dance Valley also hosted BMX, skate boarding and motorcycle competitions sponsored by LG. The back field in which HQ resided was not used; instead a large tent towards the entrance was specially erected for the harder side of dance.

The 2007 event was held on July 14. It was no longer a 3-day event as the UDC returned to its roots and reopened the HQ field, much to the delight of clubbers.

In 2009, the fifteenth edition took place on July 11 from 11:00 until 23:00.

In 2010, the sixteenth edition took place on August 7 from 10:00 until 23:00.

In 2011, the seventeenth edition took place on August 6 from 12:00 until 23:00.

In 2012, the eighteenth edition took place on August 4 from 12:00 until 23:00.

Controversy

In 2001 the festival attracted 90.000 visitors. While the terrain was large enough for this crowd, the access roads to get to and from the festival were not. When the festival ended busses and other transport were overwhelmed by the amount of visitors. [2] To complicate matters further, a rainstorm erupted and drenched stranded party goers on their way home resulting in several cases of hypothermia. [3]

DJs

Many famous and less famous DJs have played music at Dance Valley over time, with big names such as Carl Cox, Derrick May, Paul van Dyk, Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten and Yoji Biomehanika all having made appearances.

Music

While Dance Valley is a pure dance-music event, it caters to a wide audience by not limiting itself to a specific style though its heart is (as with most Dutch events), in trance. The biggest name DJs on the main stage tend to be trance DJs. In 2006, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Marco V, Hardwell and Simon Patterson (part of the duo Dogzilla) were the main draws. With the main stage reserved for the big names in mainstream dance music, up to a dozen secondary, smaller stages are dedicated to styles such as electro, Eurodance, hardstyle and experimental.

Armin van Buuren Dutch DJ and producer (born 1976)

Armin Jozef Jacobus Daniël van Buuren is a Dutch DJ and record producer from Leiden, South Holland. Since 2001, he has hosted A State of Trance (ASOT), a weekly radio show, which is broadcast to nearly 40 million listeners in 84 countries on over 100 FM radio stations. According to the website DJs and Festivals, "the radio show propelled him to stardom and helped cultivate an interest in trance music around the world."

Ferry Corsten Dutch trance producer, DJ and remixer

Ferry Corsten is a Dutch DJ, record producer and remixer from Rotterdam. He is well known for producing many pioneering trance tracks during the 1990s–2000s under his numerous aliases, including System F, Moonman, Pulp Victim and Gouryella. In recent years, he has shifted to a broader electronic music style, playing everything from progressive house to uplifting trance; and hosts his own weekly radio show, Resonation Radio. Corsten routinely plays at events and festivals all over the world including Electric Daisy Carnival, Tomorrowland, and many others, and has been consistently ranked among DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll, having placed at rank 5 in 2004 and 2005, 6 in 2006 and 2008; and most recently at 53 for 2020.

Gouryella is a solo trance project of Dutch musician Ferry Corsten. Gouryella was originally a Dutch production team, comprising Corsten and Tiësto, who later left. The word itself means "heaven" in the Australian aboriginal language.

ZoukOut

ZoukOut is an annual dance music festival held in Singapore since 2000. One of Asia's biggest music dance festivals, it is organised by Zouk Singapore. DJs that have performed at ZoukOut include Paul Van Dyk, 2ManyDJS, Masters at Work, Gilles Peterson, Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Peter Kruder, James Lavelle, Armin Van Buuren and Stereo MC's. ZoukOut has also won the Singapore Tourism Board’s “Best Leisure Event Experience” award thrice, between 2005 and 2020.

A State of Trance is a Dutch trance radio show hosted by Armin van Buuren and co-producer Ruben de Ronde that first aired in June 2001. It is aired weekly every Thursday at 20:00 (CET) and 14:00 (EST). As of January 2021, ASOT is broadcast to more than 150 stations in 84 countries, and its listener count surpassed 40 million.

Cosmic Gate

KaZantip Music festival in Crimea

KaZantip, also known simply as "Z", was an electronic dance music festival that took place every year from 1992 to 2013 on the Crimean Peninsula; from 2002 to 2013, it was held in the village of Mysovoye, near Shchelkino. Marlo Hoogstraten, also known by his stage name MaRLo, is a Dutch-born Australian trance DJ. In 2010, he was voted Australia's Number 2 Trance DJ and overall Number 11 in the Inthemix Top 50 DJ poll. He started his career using hardware synthesizers and nowadays produces almost exclusively on his computer.

Sunburn Festival EDM Music Festival In India

Sunburn is a commercial electronic dance music festival held in India. From 2007 to 2015, it took place in Vagator, Goa, India every year, but in 2016 it was shifted to Pune, Maharashtra. However, for 2019, the festival came back to it home town in Vagator, Goa. It is Asia's largest music festival. Club Glow is an electronic music event promoter and venue owner based in Washington, DC. It currently operates Echostage and Soundcheck in DC, and has previously hosted numerous large-scale events and music festivals at the DC Armory and RFK Stadium. Since its inception in 1999, Club Glow has regularly hosted top international and local talent at its venues and Echostage is frequently nominated as one of the best electronic music venues in the United States, including nominations in 2011 and 2012 at the International Dance Music Awards as one of the "Best U.S. Clubs," as well as 2021's DJ Mag "Top 100 Clubs," where the venue was ranked as the world's best nightclub. In August 2011, Club Glow partnered with Live Nation to bring electronic music to Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia, The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland, and other music venues and events. Club Glow is owned by Insomniac Events, and has previously held events with Tiesto, Avicii, Zedd, Hardwell, Porter Robinson, Calvin Harris, and many other prominent DJs.

Mike Saint-Jules is a Haitian-American DJ and EDM producer from Long Island, New York. Known best for his remixes for artists such as Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Solarstone, Markus Schulz, and JES.

Mark Sixma is a Dutch trance and house music producer and DJ. In his career, Sixma has worked on collaborations with Armin van Buuren, Faruk Sabanci and W&W, among others. He’s best known for his hit singles Sinfonia, X, Chased with Andrew Rayel, & Panta Rhei with Armin van Buuren.
