Association football Team field sport

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

The goalkeeper, often shortened to keeper or goalie, is one of the major positions of association football. It is the most specialised position in the sport. The goalkeeper's primary role is to prevent the opposing team from scoring. This is accomplished by the goalkeeper moving into the path of the ball and either catching it or directing it away from the vicinity of the goal line. Within the penalty area goalkeepers are able to use their hands, making them the only players on the field permitted to handle the ball. The special status of goalkeepers is indicated by them wearing different coloured kits from their teammates.

[1] After two seasons as backup to Iñaki Lafuente, he emerged as the side's undisputed starter, [2] helping them qualify to the UEFA Cup in 2004 while extending his contract a further four years. [3]

After additional struggles for first-choice duties with Lafuente in the 2005–06 campaign, [2] Aranzubia was definitely deemed surplus to requirements by the Basques after the emergence of Gorka Iraizoz, not appearing even when the first-choice was severely injured during 2007–08 (Athletic received veteran Armando on loan from Cádiz CF, and he became the starter). [4]

La Liga 2005-06 season, the 75th since its establishment, started on 27 August 2005 and finished on 20 May 2006 due to all top-flight European leagues ending earlier than the previous season because of 2006 FIFA World Cup.

On 2 October, he saved three penalties in a shootout against SK Brann in a UEFA Cup first round 2–0 home win, with Depor thus reaching the group stage. [6]

2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup

The 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup was the last UEFA Intertoto Cup football tournament, the 14th to be organised by UEFA and the third since the competition's format was given a major overhaul. Three rounds were held, and eleven teams qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. The draw took place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on 21 April 2008. There were 11 co-winners of the tournament with outright winner of the competition being Braga due to their progress in the subsequent UEFA Cup campaign.

UEFA Intertoto Cup European association football tournament for clubs

The UEFA Intertoto Cup, originally called the International Football Cup, was a summer football competition for European clubs that had not qualified for one of the major UEFA competitions, the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and until 1999, the Cup Winners' Cup. The competition was discontinued after the 2008 tournament. Teams who originally would have entered the Intertoto Cup now directly enter the qualifying stages of the UEFA Europa League from this point.

Aranzubia missed the first six games of the 2010–11 campaign due to injury, [7] but again finished as a starter for Deportivo. On 20 February 2011, he scored with his head after a 95th-minute corner kick as his team managed a 1–1 draw at UD Almería, [8] becoming the first goalkeeper in La Liga history to score from open play. [9]

The 2010–11 La Liga season was the 80th since its establishment. The campaign began on 28 August 2010 and ended on 21 May 2011. A total of 20 teams contested the league, 17 of which already contested in the 2009–10 season and three of which were promoted from the Segunda División. In addition, a new match ball – the Nike Total 90 Tracer – served as the official ball for all matches.

The term "last-minute goal" is used in sport, primarily association football, to describe a goal scored very late in a game, usually one that affects the outcome of the game. The definition of a "last-minute goal" commonly used is one scored either in the final or penultimate minute of regulation time or extra time, or during stoppage time or injury time.

Corner kick method of restarting play in association football

A corner kick is the method of restarting play in a game of association football when the ball goes out of play over the goal line, without a goal being scored, and having last been touched by a member of the defending team. The kick is taken from the corner of the field of play nearest to where it went out. Corners are considered to be a reasonable goal scoring opportunity for the attacking side, though not as much as a penalty kick or a direct free kick near the edge of the penalty area.

Atlético Madrid

In August 2013, Aranzubia signed for Atlético Madrid as a backup to Thibaut Courtois. [10] He made his debut in the UEFA Champions League on 11 December 2013 shortly after his 34th birthday, saving a penalty from FC Porto's Josué in an eventual 2–0 group stage home win. [11]

As the Belgian was unavailable due to injury, Aranzubia first played in the league with the Colchoneros on 8 February 2014, being sent off in the last minutes of an eventual 0–2 loss at Almería after fouling Jonathan Zongo in the box. [12]

International career

Aranzubia made his only appearance for Spain on 5 June 2004, in a friendly match with Andorra at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. He came on as a substitute for Santiago Cañizares, who had already replaced Iker Casillas, at the hour-mark, [13] after having been selected as third-choice for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. [14]

Previously, Aranzubia helped the nation win the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship and finish runner-up at the 2000 Summer Olympics, starting in both finals. [15] [16]
