Daniel Joseph Ribeiro (born July 13, 1989) is an American former artistic gymnast and current collegiate men's gymnastics coach. He is the Illinois Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team head coach. He was the 2010 United States national champion on pommel horse.

Early life and education

Ribeiro was born on July 13, 1989, to Michele and João Luiz Ribeiro. [1] His father was an artistic gymnast and represented Brazil at the 1980 Summer Olympics. [2] Ribeiro's hometown was Chestnut Ridge, New York, and he practiced gymnastics under Genadi Shub at US Gymnastics Development Center II, owned by his parents, in nearby Mahwah, New Jersey. [3] He attended Northern Highlands Regional High School and later enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to pursue gymnastics.

Gymnastics career

Ribeiro was a member of the Illinois Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team from 2008 to 2011 under head coach Yoshi Hayasaki and then later Justin Spring. Spring, himself a former Illinois Fighting Illini gymnast and 2008 Summer Olympics bronze medalist, was a mentor to Ribeiro. [4] While at Illinois, he was the two-time NCAA champion on the pommel horse (2009, 2011) and was the 2010 United States national champion on the pommel horse.

Coaching career

Ribeiro was named the permanent head coach of Illinois in December 2022 by athletic director Josh Whitman with a contract through the 2026–2027 season. [5] [6]

Despite his numerous achievements at the World Championships, Europeans and other events, Ivankov has suffered a string of misfortunes at the Olympics, and has never won an Olympic medal. Daniel Ryan Keatings is a retired British artistic gymnast representing Scotland and Great Britain. Both an all-around gymnast and a specialist pommel horse worker, Keatings was the first male British gymnast to medal at the all-around competition at the World Championships, and the first male British gymnast to become a European champion, winning on pommel horse, his signature piece, in 2010 in Birmingham and again in 2013 in Moscow. In 2014, he won gold at the Commonwealth Games, again in pommel horse, for Scotland. With Louis Smith, Max Whitlock and Joe Fraser of England and Great Britain, and Rhys McClenaghan of Northern Ireland and Ireland, Keatings formed part of a golden generation of home nations pommel horse workers who dominated the apparatus at global, continental and Commonwealth Games level from 2010 onwards.

Robert Luke Stannard is an American gymnast. He competed for Illinois from 2007 to 2010. In 2009, he won the gold medal on pommel horse at the National championships. In 2010, he placed fourth at NCAA championships on pommel horse and thus earned all-American honors. That year, he was awarded the Nissen-Emery, the gymnastics version of the Heisman.

Paul Ruggeri III is a retired American gymnast. He was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team and won a combined five medals at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games. He was an alternate for many World Artistic Gymnastics Championships teams for the United States and successfully made his first in 2015.

The Illinois Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team represents the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and competes in the Big Ten Conference. Rhys Joshua McClenaghan is an artistic gymnast from Northern Ireland who competes internationally both for Ireland and Northern Ireland. McClenaghan is widely recognised as one of the best pommel horse specialists of his generation, and is considered the principle successor to the most successful global pommel horse gymnast of all time, the double Olympic, triple world champion Max Whitlock with whom McClenaghan's career has largely overlapped.

Ahmad Abu Al-Soud is a Jordanian artistic gymnast. He became the first gymnast from Jordan to medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships when he won the silver medal on pommel horse at the 2022 World Championships. He then won the bronze medal on the pommel horse at the 2023 World Championships. He is also the 2019 and 2022 Asian champion on the pommel horse. He represented Jordan at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the first gymnast from Jordan to do so.

Christopher "C. J." Maestas is a retired American artistic gymnast. He was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team.
