Daniel Riley (born 1985or1986) is an Australian dancer and choreographer. After a long career with Bangarra Dance Theatre in Sydney, since January 2022 he has been the artistic director of the contemporary dance company Australian Dance Theatre, based in Adelaide, South Australia.
Daniel Riley was born in 1985or1986. [1] He is of Wiradjuri descent, from western New South Wales. [2] He developed his love of dance at a young age, after watching his sister at her dance studio when he was around nine years told, and was also influenced by the popular musical show Tap Dogs. He started out doing tap dance, and was bullied at school about it. However, he began to realise the cultural significance of dance for Aboriginal Australians, including men. [3]
When he was 13, Riley's family moved to Canberra when his father got a job at Queanbeyan South Public School. His father met and introduced Riley to Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, who recommended the new youth dance studio Quantum Leap [3] (now QL2 [4] ). Riley spent most of his weekends thereafter at Quantum Leap. He did not realise at the time that Dalman was the founder of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), until some years later when they toured to Canberra and he was greatly impressed by the style of their contemporary dance. Around that time, he also saw a performance by Bangarra Dance Theatre, and decided that that was where he needed to be. [3]
He graduated from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2006. [5]
Riley has danced and choreographed extensively in Australia and around the world. As of 2022 he had choreographed more than 15 works, for various organisations and festivals. [2]
Riley first danced with Leigh Warren & Dancers in South Australia, from 2005 to 2006. [5]
Riley spent 12 years with Bangarra, [2] from 2007 to 2018, [5] apart from a year off in 2014–15. [1]
While at Bangarra, he was the youngest male dancer in the company to choreograph a work, creating a work called Riley, which paid tribute to the work of Aboriginal artist Michael Riley (to whom he discovered he was related). He got the idea that he wanted to do this work after seeing an exhibition of his photographs at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, while on tour with Bangarra in 2007. After talking to Stephen Page about it, who encouraged him to think about it further, two years later his work premiered as a double bill with a work by Frances Rings at the Sydney Opera House. The work was a huge success. [1]
After dancing with Bangarra for seven years, Riley requested a year off as he felt exhausted and needed time to recharge, and he and his wife headed overseas. During this time, he choreographed shows for the Third Row Dance Company, a student-led group at the University of Roehampton in south London. [1] In 2014 he danced with the New Movement Collective and Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre in the UK. [5]
He spent two weeks choreographing at Louisville Ballet, which was run by former Australian Ballet principal dancer and Bangarra rehearsal director, Robert Curran. He found that challenging, as the dancers were pure ballet dancers, without exposure to contemporary dance. The work, Sacred Shifts premiered in March 2015. [1]
Also during his break from Bangarra, in 2015 Riley was invited in by Rafael Bonachela, choreographer of the Sydney Dance Company, to choreograph a piece for only the female dancers of SDC, as part of the company's three-year "New Breed" initiative for emerging choreographers. [1]
He returned to dance full-time at Bangarra in September 2015. [1] In 2016, along with his cousin Beau Dean Riley Smith, Riley choreographed a piece called Miyagan, which explores their family and cultural heritage. The piece was performed, along with two others, in Brisbane. [6] [7]
In June 2021, Riley was appointed as artistic director of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), Australia's oldest contemporary dance company, [7] based at the Odeon Theatre in Kaurna country in the eastern Adelaide suburb of Norwood. [3] He took over from long-serving director Garry Stewart, [2] assuming the role at the end of 2021. He is the first Indigenous person to become an artistic director of a non-Indigenous dance company in Australia. [7] This responsibility weighs heavily on him, but he was inspired by playwright Wesley Enoch, the first Indigenous artistic director of a major theatre company, at Queensland Theatre. [3] He has remained friends with founder Elizabeth Dalman and they talk often. [3]
The first ADT work under his direction was performed in May 2022, a triptych of dances called Outside Within. [2] In September 2022 Riley presented his first major work, at the Dunstan Playhouse in the Adelaide Festival Centre, called SAVAGE. The performance included nine dance students from Flinders University/AC Arts along with the ADT dancers, and Riley dances in the piece as well. [8] [3]
Riley believes in an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach, and is dedicated to creating shows that "can only be made here [on Kaurna country], not making work that looks like it's been made by a European company". [3]
Riley worked as associate producer and then creative associate for ILBIJERRI Theatre Company from between 2019 and 2021. [5]
In 2020 he was appointed lecturer in contemporary dance at the Victorian College of the Arts (part of the University of Melbourne) in Melbourne. [2] There he launched Kummarge, a mentoring program for Indigenous dance students. [5] In 2021 he choreographed a piece called WAX, one of three in Atlas | gadhaba kurrawan - weaving and bringing together at the university, performed in November 2021. [9] [10]
He was a board member at Chunky Move (2019–2022), and a board associate at the cultural think tank A New Approach. [5] In 2021 he was a mentor at Moogahlin Performing Arts at Carriageworks in Sydney. [5]
He also has film credits: [5] performing in the music video of Dan Sultan's 2014 song "Under Your Skin", [11] and for Bangarra's Spear (2015), in which he acted and worked as director's attachment. [12]
As of September 2024 [update] Riley is on the board of Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. [5]
In September 2024, Riley was appointed a member of First Nations Arts, a newly established division of the government arts funding body Australia Council focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, for a term of four years. [13] [14] [15]

Dance Hub SA, formerly Leigh Warren & Dancers or Leigh Warren + Dancers (LWD) and then LWDance Hub, is a contemporary dance company based in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Formed in 1993 by Leigh Warren, the company toured internationally and won several awards.
Ceremonial dancing has a very important place in the Indigenous cultures of Australia. They vary from place to place, but most ceremonies combine dance, song, rituals and often elaborate body decorations and costumes. The different body paintings indicate the type of ceremony being performed. They play an important role in marriage ceremonies, in the education of Indigenous children, as well as storytelling and oral history. The term corroboree is commonly used to refer to Australian Aboriginal dances, although this term has its origins among the people of the Sydney region. In some places, Aboriginal people perform corroborees for tourists. In the latter part of the 20th century the influence of Indigenous Australian dance traditions has been seen with the development of concert dance, with the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) providing training in contemporary dance.

The NAISDA Dance College is a performing arts training college based in Kariong, New South Wales for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. It was established as the Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Scheme (AISDS) in 1975, which became the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) in 1988. The date of establishment of the college is usually cited as 1976, although some sources report it as 1975.
Michael Riley was an Aboriginal Australian photographer and filmmaker, and co-founder of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative. A significant figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art, Riley's work is held by many public art institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia.
Garry Stewart is an Australian dancer and choreographer. He was the longest-serving artistic director of the Australian Dance Theatre, taking over from Meryl Tankard in 1999 and finishing his term at the end of 2021. He is renowned for his unusual, post-modern interpretations of classical ballets.
Eleo Pomare was a Colombian-American modern dance choreographer. Known for his politically-charged productions depicting the Black experience, his work had a major influence on contemporary dance, especially Black dance. After a tour to Australia in 1972, and the subsequent return of his then lead dancer, Carole Johnson, his style of dancing continues to influence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander modern dancers.
Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre (AIDT) was the first dance company used to train Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on their dancing career, and grew into a performance group. Originating in the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association, it was based in Sydney, New South Wales, and operated from 1976 to 1998.
Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is an Australian choreographer, teacher, and performer. She founded Australian Dance Theatre and was its artistic director from 1965 to 1975. She is also the founding director of Mirramu Dance Company.
Roy David Page, known as Dubboo to his close friends, was an Australian composer who was the music director of the Bangarra Dance Theatre. He was descended from the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali clan of the Yugambeh people of south-east Queensland, and brother of choreographer Stephen Page and dancer Russell Page. He was also an actor, singer and drag artist.
Guypunura "Janet" Munyarryun is an Aboriginal dancer, choreographer and tutor. She was a founding member of the Bangarra Dance Theatre.
Banula (David) Marika is an Aboriginal Australian dancer, actor, singer and performer from Yirrkala in North East Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The son of Roy Marika, he is a member of the Rirratjingu clan of the Yolngu people, and is known for his performances with the Bangarra Dance Theatre since the 1990s.
Carole Yvonne Johnson is an African American contemporary dancer and choreographer, known for her role in the establishment of the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA), and as co-founder of Bangarra Dance Theatre in Australia. Early in her career she became a lead dancer in the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, and Pomare had a profound influence on her dancing style.
Kirk Page is an Australian dancer, singer, actor of stage and screen, movement director, and theatre director. As of 2024 he is associate director of Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA) in Lismore, New South Wales.
