It was established in 1878 under the name Creighton College and is located in the Archdiocese of Omaha. Creighton College was founded by John A. Creighton and named after Edward Creighton,developer of the transcontinental telegraph line. It was founded from a $100,000 grant and donated to the Catholic Church,leading to its inception as a Jesuit institution. Creighton College separated into Creighton University and Creighton Preparatory School in 1958. The Creighton University School of Medicine is the graduate medical school at Creighton University in Omaha,Nebraska,United States,and grants the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. It was founded in 1892. A satellite campus opened in 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix,Arizona,becoming the first Jesuit medical program west of Omaha. Initially,all matriculating students completed preclinical coursework in Omaha,and 42 third-year students completed their clinical rotations in Phoenix,with elective options at both campuses during their fourth year. As of 2021,students now complete pre-clinical coursework at both the Omaha and Phoenix campuses.

The announcement was made in the university's Brennan Hall on December 15,2010,that he was to be the 25th President of the University. He succeeded Rev. Scott Pilarz,S.J.,who left Scranton to become the President of Marquette University. Father Quinn's official inauguration took place on September 16,2011,at the University of Scranton's William J. Byron,S.J.,Recreation Complex.

Sheritta A. Strong is an American adult psychiatrist and an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Strong is a leader in education and advocacy at UNMC,is the co-director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Psychiatry as well as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Inclusion at UNMC. As a psychiatrist,Strong focuses her clinical attention on treating patients with chronic and persistent mental illness. She is also dedicated to reducing barriers to healthcare access for marginalized populations and she mentors underrepresented scientists and physicians to increase their retention in healthcare. In 2018,Strong was awarded the Nancy C.A. Roeske,M.D.,Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and in 2020 Strong became a Distinguished Fellow of the APA.
