Darfield railway station was opened in 1840 by the North Midland Railway, serving the village of Darfield in South Yorkshire, England.
The original station building was of typical Francis Thompson Italianate design. Immediately north of it was Cat Hill Tunnel which was opened out when the line was quadrupled, and, in 1901, the station was rebuilt 15 chains further north next to the Doncaster road. A terrace of four cottages is shown on Ordnance Survey maps as "Railway Cottages" long after all other traces of the old station and its small goods yard had been removed. The last appearance of the cottages was on the OS map of 1955–56. Access to the cottages was by a drive which ran south to Cat Hill Road between Broomhill and the skew bridge which carried the railway over the road.
The new station had typical Midland Railway timber panelled buildings. The new goods lines passed to the east. These had access to three major collieries - Grimethorpe, Dearne Valley and Houghton Main - and connected to the GCR and L&Y lines. [2]
The station closed in June 1963 and the line closed in 1988.
Snow Hill Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the northern edge of the City of London which carries the up and down Snow Hill lines between City Thameslink and Farringdon stations. The tunnel runs beneath the Smithfield meat market and was constructed, using the cut-and-cover method, immediately prior to the building of the market. The tunnel opened on 1 January 1866.

The Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) was formed in the 1860s and became the second-largest joint railway in Great Britain. The committee, which was often styled the Cheshire Lines Railway, operated 143 miles (230 km) of track in the then counties of Lancashire and Cheshire. The railway did not get grouped into one of the Big Four during the implementation of the 1923 grouping, surviving independently with its own management until the railways were nationalised at the beginning of 1948. The railway served Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport, Warrington, Widnes, Northwich, Winsford, Knutsford, Chester and Southport with connections to many other railways.
Hackney Central is a London Overground station on the North London line in Hackney Central, Greater London. It lies between Dalston Kingsland and Homerton and is in Travelcard Zone 2. The Bristol and Gloucester Railway was a railway company opened in 1844 to run services between Bristol and Gloucester. It was built on the 7 ftBrunel gauge, but it was acquired in 1845 by the 4 ft 8+1⁄2 instandard gauge Midland Railway, which also acquired the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway at the same time.
The Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway was an English railway network built by the GNR to get access to coal resources in the area to the north and west of Nottingham. The Midland Railway had obstructed the GNR in its attempts to secure a share of the lucrative business of transporting coal from the area, and in frustration the GNR built the line. The line was forked: it reached Pinxton in 1875 and a junction with the North Staffordshire Railway at Egginton, approaching Burton on Trent in 1878. The line cut through Derby, resulting in considerable demolition of housing there.
The Sheffield District Rail Rationalisation Plan was a series of linked railway civil engineering projects, station and line closures and train route changes that took place in and around Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The majority of these changes took place in the 1960s and early 1970s, however the plan, by now much modified in the face of rapidly dwindling freight traffic, was not fully realised until the 1980s.

Cat Hill Tunnel was a railway tunnel that ran through Darfield, South Yorkshire, England, leading to Darfield railway station. The tunnel was built by George Stephenson for the North Midland Railway opened in 1840. It was 154 yards long and ran under fields into Darfield station from the Cathill Road end of Darfield.

Sandal and Walton railway station was opened on 1 June 1870 by the Midland Railway on its line from Derby to Leeds Wellington Station.
The Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway (LD&ECR) was built to connect coalfields in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire with Warrington and a new port on the Lincolnshire coast. It was a huge undertaking, and the company was unable to raise the money to build its line. With the financial help of the Great Eastern Railway it managed to open between Chesterfield and Lincoln with a branch towards Sheffield from 1896. Despite efforts to promote tourist travel, the passenger business was never buoyant, but collieries were connected to the line, at first and in succeeding years. The Great Eastern Railway, and other main line companies, transported coal to the southern counties, and the company's engines took coal to Immingham in great quantities. The company had a fleet of tank engines.
Thorpe on the Hill railway station was a station serving the village of Thorpe-on-the-Hill, Lincolnshire, England.
The Oxford, Witney and Fairford Railway was a single track railway branch line, 22 miles (35 km) long, in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. It was opened in succession by two companies, the first in 1861 to connect the important woollen town of Witney to the main line network, and the second in 1873 as the rump of an ambitious scheme to connect to Cheltenham, but which ran only between Witney and Fairford. The junction with the main line was at Yarnton, north of Oxford.
The East Norfolk Railway was a pre-grouping railway company operating a standard gauge 25 mile, mostly single track, railway running between Norwich Thorpe railway station and Cromer in the English county of Norfolk. It opened in 1874, reaching Cromer three years later, and remains mostly operational. The company also operated a branch between Wroxham and County School, which closed to passengers in 1952, and had proposed a branch to Blakeney in 1878, which was never constructed.
The Birmingham West Suburban Railway was a suburban railway built by the Midland Railway company. Opened in stages between 1876 and 1885, it allowed both the opening of development of central southwest suburban Birmingham south into Worcestershire and the by-passing of railway traffic via the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway into central Birmingham. Today, it forms a major section of the Cross-City Line, running from Lichfield to Redditch. It also forms an important part of the Cross Country Route.
Bolsover Castle is a former railway station in Bolsover, Derbyshire, England.
Copmanthorpe railway station served the village of Copmanthorpe, North Yorkshire, England from 1839 to 1959 on the York to Normanton line. The line also became part of the East Coast Main Line at various periods. The station was moved and substantially rebuilt halfway through its working life.
