Darren McCormack (born 29 September 1988) is a Scottish professional footballer who used to play as a defender for Tranent Juniors now a free agent.

McCormack, a defender, started his career with Scottish Premier League club Hibernian, but was released at the end of the 2009–10 season. McCormack then signed for Ross County, but he suffered a broken leg and was again released. He signed for East Fife in January 2012 and Airdrieonians in July 2013, then Brechin City in June 2014. He was also banned from the sport in 2017 following attempted murder and previous convictions until he signed for Tranent Juniors in July 2021. McCormack has also represented the Scotland national under-21 football team.

Playing career

Celtic made an approach to sign McCormack in 2007, but he signed a five-year deal to stay with Hibs. [2] He made his league debut for Hibs in a 4–1 win over Kilmarnock in September 2007. McCormack was selected for the Scotland under–21 squad for the match against Norway in May 2008. [3] He was also selected for the match against Lithuania in August 2008, but did not play. [4]

McCormack made his first first-team appearance for Hibs in over a year in a 2–0 win against St Mirren during January 2009, replacing the suspended David van Zanten at right back. His appearances were limited during the 2009–10 season, making only six first team appearances as of February 2010. [2] He was sent off during the last of those appearances, an Edinburgh derby match. [2] McCormack's contract was not renewed by Hibs at the end of the season. [5]

After his release by Hibs at the end of the 2009–10 season, McCormack signed for Scottish First Division club Ross County. [6] He suffered a broken leg and was released by Ross County in September 2011. [7]

McCormack signed for Scottish Second Division club East Fife in January 2012. [8] He made his debut on 2 January, in a 4–0 defeat against Cowdenbeath. [9]

McCormack signed for Airdrieonians in July 2013, [10] leaving the club in June 2014 to sign for Brechin City. After three seasons with Brechin, McCormack was released by the club on 30 May 2017. [11] On 23 October 2017, McCormack was banned from competitive football until 7 April 2021 due to him failing an "in-competition test" in April 2017, when he was registered with Brechin. [12] McCormack had tested positive for use of metabolites of metandienone (epimetendiol, epitmetandienone and hydroxymetandienone). [12]

Personal life

McCormack was arrested for an assault on Hearts striker Calum Elliot on 22 March 2009, near an Edinburgh nightclub. [13] When the case came to Edinburgh Sheriff Court, McCormack pleaded guilty to an assault charge, and was fined £1000. [14] The court was told that McCormack had punched Elliot in the face after Elliot had "made a deliberately antagonising remark to him about their respective football careers". [14] McCormack, who sent an apology to Elliot via his agent, was also fined £1200 (two weeks' wages) by Hibernian. [14]

During February 2010, McCormack was arrested by police on Leith Walk and charged with the offences of driving without insurance and driving without a licence. [2] He was subsequently banned from driving for 12 months and fined £500. [15]

McCormack was charged with attempted murder in December 2017. [16]

Season 2009–10 for Hibernian was their eleventh consecutive season of play in the Scottish Premier League. The SPL season began on 15 August 2009, with a 2–1 win against St Mirren at home. After a very strong start to the season in which they challenged for the league leadership, Hibs then had a slump in form in the later part of the season. The team eventually secured a Europa League place via finishing fourth in the SPL by winning 2–0 on the final day at Tannadice. Hibs were eliminated from the Scottish Cup in a quarter final replay by Ross County and were knocked out of the Scottish League Cup in the third round by St Johnstone.

Season 2010–11 for Hibernian was their 12th consecutive season of play in the Scottish Premier League. It was the first season played in the redeveloped Easter Road stadium, with its capacity increased to over 20,000 for the first time since it became an all-seater stadium in the early 1990s. The SPL season began on 15 August 2010 with a 3–2 win at Motherwell. Hibs competed in the UEFA Europa League, losing 6–2 on aggregate to Slovenian club NK Maribor. They also lost at the first stage of competition in the Scottish League Cup, losing 3–1 at Kilmarnock. Those cup defeats and a poor start to the league season led to manager John Hughes leaving by mutual consent in early October. Colin Calderwood was appointed as the new manager, but struggled to make any sort of impression, as they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Ayr United and fell into a relegation battle. A winning streak after the January transfer window meant any danger was quickly averted, but the team still finished in the bottom six.

Daniel Handling is a Scottish footballer who plays for Tranent Juniors. Handling has previously played for Hibernian and Dumbarton as well as Berwick Rangers and Raith Rovers on loan.

Season 2011–12 for Hibernian was their 13th consecutive season of play in the Scottish Premier League (SPL). The season began on 24 July with a 2–0 home defeat by Celtic, who eliminated Hibs from the Scottish League Cup. With the club near the bottom of the league, manager Colin Calderwood was sacked and replaced with Pat Fenlon in November. Fenlon made several signings during January that helped the club to avoid relegation from the SPL. Hibs also reached the 2012 Scottish Cup Final, but this was lost 5–1 to local rivals Hearts.

Hibs also entered the Europa League, and progressed through two qualifying rounds before losing to Norwegian club Molde. They were knocked out of the League Cup in a penalty shootout by Aberdeen, and in the Scottish Cup by Celtic, and finished fifth in the league.
