Zammit Lupi was born in 1968 in Malta. He began his career as a photographer with The Malta Independent newspaper in 1992, but shortly thereafter became a freelance photographer. He studied at the University of the Arts London from which he earned a master's degree in Photojournalism and Documentary photography.
In 1996, Zammit Lupi started working as a photographer with the Times of Malta and in the following year he became a freelance correspondent for Reuters. His work documents the migration crisis in the Mediterranean, the devastating Tsunamis of Southeast Asia, the Millennium Development Goals in different areas of Africa, the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake, the Costa Concordia disaster, the Libyan conflict, and other international events.
Zammit Lupi has published two books, Isle Landers and Off the Job.
Isle Landers was published in 2014. It is composed of photos taken by Zammit Lupi from 2005 to 2014 regarding the migratory situation in the Mediterranean. In these photos, Zammit Lupi photographed the migrants from their rescue at sea, upon arrival in Europe at the immigration centers, until their departure. The purpose of the book is to combat racism and xenophobia and raise awareness of the international public about the struggles of African and Middle Eastern migrants. [1] [2]
Off the Job was published in 2015 and is composed of photos taken with an iPhone by Zammit Lupi in non-working contexts. Lupi prefers the iPhone when taking photos for pleasure; according to him, "it is the ideal way to recharge my creative energies". [3] [4]

Photojournalism is journalism that uses images to tell a news story. It usually only refers to still images, but can also refer to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography by having a rigid ethical framework which demands an honest but impartial approach that tells a story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. SOS Méditerranée is a European, maritime-humanitarian organisation for the rescue of life at sea, currently operating in the Mediterranean sea in international waters north of Libya. The organization chartered the Aquarius and more recently the Ocean Viking in order to rescue people fleeing by sea from Libya and who risk drowning. The group was founded in June 2015 by German former captain Klaus Vogel and Frenchwoman Sophie Beau after the Italian navy ended the rescue Operation Mare Nostrum in 2014. Michele McNally was an American photojournalism editor at The New York Times. She was the director of photography there during a 14-year span from 2004 to 2018. During her tenure, the newspaper won numerous awards for photojournalism, including Pulitzer Prizes, George M. Polk Awards, Overseas Press Club honors, Emmys and other citations for excellence in photography. As an editor, she won the Jim Gordon Editor of the Year Award for photojournalism from the National Press Photographers Association, and she won the Angus McDougall Visual Editing Award in 2015 and 2017. She was active as a judge in numerous photography journalism competitions. Her work often involved looking carefully at particular photographs to ascertain whether any of them had been staged or doctored, and she often weighed in on issues regarding particular photos. In evaluating photographs for news pictures, when depicting real situations and events, her policy was not to permit photographs which were staged.
