Biography in the Kano Chronicle

Below is a biography of Dauda Abasama I from Palmer's 1908 English translation of the Kano Chronicle . [2]

The 24th Sarki was Dauda Abasama. His mother’s name was Zuhara.

He ruled 1 month and 20 days before he was turned out. His brothers, Kazura, Majia, and his sister, Buduru, so called because she was unmarried, Gilima, Taura and Gwunka, the youngest, joined him in his exile at a place called Karmashe. Dauda settled there and a house was built for him. The brothers each chose a place to live.

Abdullahi Dan Kanajeji, known as Abdullahi Burja, was the sixteenth ruler of Kano. Through forging of powerful alliances and the creation of trade routes, Burja shifted the identity of the Kano Sultanate towards trade and commerce, what Kano and the Kanoan people are known for today. He was the first Hausa King to pay tribute to Bornu and in doing so secured an agreement that allowed him to open trade routes from Gwanja to Bornu. He was also the first King to own camels in Hausaland. This shift towards trade saw an intensification of slave raids by Kano towards the south to export to Bornu. Abdullahi Burja through his Galadima created twenty one new slave colonies, each with a thousand slaves of an equal split between male and female slaves. Slowly, trade in Kano shifted towards other commodities and by the end of the 15th Century, Kano had emerged as one of the most vibrant trading centers in the Sahel. Through trade, the Hausa language and culture was spread throughout the region.
