Soronzonboldyn Battsetseg is Mongolia's first female gold medalist of the World Wrestling Championships. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she won bronze in women's 63 kg freestyle. It was Mongolia's first medal in freestyle wrestling since the 1980 Summer Olympics. Battsetseg was the youngest ever world wrestling champion of Mongolia when she won in 2010 at the age of 20 years. Now Sükheegiin Tserenchimed is the youngest champion of Mongolia. She is a recipient of the Hero of Labour of Mongolia and the Order of Sukhbaatar.

Wrestling at the 2012 Summer Olympics were held between 5 and 12 August, the final day of the Games, at ExCeL London. It was split into two disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman which were further divided into different weight categories. Men competed in both disciplines whereas women only took part in the freestyle events, with 18 gold medals awarded. Wrestling has been contested at every modern Summer Olympic Games, except Paris 1900.
Davaasükhiin Otgontsetseg is a freestyle wrestler from Mongolia. She won a World Championship silver medal in the -51 kg division in 2011, and a bronze in 2016 in the -55 kg division.
Men's freestyle 120 kilograms competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, took place on 11 August at ExCeL London. This freestyle wrestling competition consisted of a single-elimination tournament, with a repechage used to determine the winners of two bronze medals. The two finalists faced off for gold and silver medals. Each wrestler who lost to one of the two finalists moved into the repechage, culminating in a pair of bronze medal matches featuring the semifinal losers each facing the remaining repechage opponent from their half of the bracket.
Christoph Fildebrandt is a German swimmer. He won a silver and a bronze medal in freestyle relays at the European and world short-course championships in 2010 and 2012, respectively. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, his team finished sixth in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he competed in the 200 m freestyle where he finished 28th in the heats and did not qualify for the semifinals. He also competed as part of the 4 x 200 freestyle relay team which finished in 6th place.
Pieter Timmers is a Belgian retired competitive swimmer who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He won the silver medal in the 100 meter freestyle at the 2016 Olympics. Timmers currently holds nine Belgian records, and seven national titles in long and short course freestyle. Timmers is a resident athlete for Brabo Antwerp, and trains under his personal coach Ronald Gaastra. He stands 2.00 m, and weighs 89 kg (196 lb). He ended his career in Budapest in the second season of the International Swimming League in 2020.
Vladimer Khinchegashvili is a Georgian freestyle wrestler who competes in 55–61 kg categories. He won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and a gold at the 2016 Olympics. He also won a world title in 2015 and European titles in 2014, 2016 and 2017. In 2015, he was selected as Male Georgian Athlete of the Year by the Georgian Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. Wuileixis de Jesus Rivas Espinoza is a Greco-Roman wrestler from Venezuela who competes in the welterweight category. At the 2012 Olympics he received a bye for the preliminary round of sixteen match, before losing to French wrestler and defending Olympic champion Steeve Guénot, who was able to score one point each in two straight periods, leaving Rivas without a single point. At the 2016 Rio Games he was also eliminated in the first bout, against Omid Norouzi who was the defending champion from London.

Bajrang Punia is an Indian freestyle wrestler, who competes in the 65-kg weight category. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Punia won a bronze medal by defeating Kazakhstan's Daulet Niyazbekov with a 8–0 margin. Punia is the only Indian wrestler to win 4 medals at the World Wrestling Championships.
