Dave Pagel is a retired businessman and former Republican politician from Michigan who served in the Michigan House of Representatives. [2] Prior to his election to the House,Pagel served for four years as the chairman of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Prior to that,he was the president of the Berrien Springs school board for 14 years. [3]
In addition to his political activity,Pagel was involved in agriculture in Berrien Springs,Michigan for more than 40 years. [4] His family owned Dave Pagel Produce,which packages and distributes Michigan-grown fruit sold in grocery stores throughout southwest Michigan,Northern Indiana,and the Chicago area. [4]
Pagel grew up in Berrien Springs,Michigan where he attended the local public schools. He is an alumnus of Michigan State University in East Lansing,Michigan. [2] He graduated in 1976 with a degree in agricultural business. [4]
After graduating from Michigan State,Pagel worked with his father and older brother on the family’s fruit farm. [4] In order to assist in the marketing of the family’s farm output,Pagel founded Dave Pagel Produce in 1978. [3] Over forty seasons the business expanded to supply fruit grown around Berrien County to grocery stores and farm stands in Michigan,Indiana,and Illinois. [4] In addition to the produce packaging and distribution operation,the Pagel family also maintained an orchard of honeycrisp apples across the street. [4]
Pagel’s political career began with public service on the school board of Berrien Springs Public School system. As his own children were beginning school in 1993,Pagel was elected to the board and to the presidency of the board. [3] After 14 years of service to the school board,Pagel ran for an open position on the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. He served two terms in that position and was chosen as the chair of the board for both. [4] Following his four years on the county board,Pagel ran for an open seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. His father-in-law,Lad Stacey,had served in the state legislature in the 1970s and 1980s. [5] Pagel won election to the 78th District in 2012 and was re-elected in 2014 and 2016. In February 2018,Pagel announced that he would seek the Republican Party nomination for the 21st District in the Michigan State Senate. [6]
Benton Harbor is a city in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is 46 miles southwest of Kalamazoo and 71 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. According to the 2020 census,its population was 9,103. It is the smaller,by population,of the two principal cities in the Niles–Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area,an area with 156,813 people. Benton Harbor and the city of St. Joseph are separated by the St. Joseph River and are known locally as the "Twin Cities". Fairplain and Benton Heights are unincorporated areas adjacent to Benton Harbor.
Berrien Springs is a village in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,800 at the time of the 2010 census. The village is located within Oronoko Charter Township.
Sodus Township is a civil township of Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,932 at the 2010 census. There are no incorporated municipalities in the township. The unincorporated community of Sodus in the northwest of the township is its main settlement;the portion of the township just to the west is part of the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph urban area.

The St. Joseph Valley Parkway is a freeway in the U.S. states of Indiana and Michigan,serving as a bypass route around Elkhart,Mishawaka,and South Bend in Indiana and Niles in Michigan. The freeway runs to the south and west of Elkhart and South Bend and Niles and consists of segments of U.S. Route 31 (US 31) and US 20;those two highway designations run concurrently at the southwestern rim of the South Bend metropolitan area. The Berrien County Historical Association(BCHA) is a historical association located in Berrien Springs,Michigan. Established in 1968 as the Berrien County Historical Commission,the organization partners with Berrien County,Michigan to operate the History Center at Courthouse Square,also located in Berrien Springs. The Courthouse Square is home to two of Michigan's most historic properties –the 1839 County Courthouse and the 1830 Murdock Log Cabin. In addition to permanent exhibits,the BCHA also mounts temporary exhibits throughout the year and hosts numerous programs for all ages on topics related to the history,heritage,and culture of Berrien County and the surrounding areas.
Elliot Uzelac is an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at Western Michigan University from 1975 to 1981 and the United States Naval Academy from 1987 to 1989,compiling a career college football coaching record of 46–64. In June 2018,Uzelac resigned as head football coach at Benton Harbor High School in Benton Harbor,Michigan. In January 2020,Uzelac returned from retirement to become the head coach at Berrien Springs High School.
