David Victor Spence (born 8 January 1930) is a former New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Central Districts from 1955 to 1962.
Dave Spence played five matches for Central Districts in 1955–56,one in 1960–61,and five more in 1961–62. A middle-order batsman and leg-spin bowler,he took his best bowling figures of 5 for 38 in a victory over Wellington in the second match of the 1955–56 Plunket Shield season, [1] then made his highest score of 61 in an innings victory over Otago in the next match 11 days later. [2] At the time he was considered a potential Test player. [3] However,after that season he played only six more first-class matches,in which he took five wickets. [4]
Spence also played Hawke Cup cricket for Hawke's Bay from 1950 to 1953,and for Nelson from 1954 to 1967. [5] He was the captain of the Nelson side that held the Hawke Cup during its record title run from 1958 to 1965,and he was named in the Hawke Cup Team of the Century in 2011. [6] In 34 Hawke Cup challenge matches,he scored 1,574 runs at an average of 36.60,and took 110 wickets at an average of 15.42. [7]
He now lives in Gosford,New South Wales. [6] In January 2021,with the death of Doug Bowden,he became Central Districts' oldest surviving player. [8]
Henry Butler Cave was a New Zealand cricketer who captained New Zealand in nine of his 19 Test matches. His Test career extended from 1949 to 1958,and he played first-class cricket from 1945 to 1959.
Norman Gallichan was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Wellington and one Test match for New Zealand.
John Chaloner Alabaster was a New Zealand cricketer who played 21 Test matches for the country's national team between 1955 and 1972. A leg-spin bowler,he was the only New Zealander to play in each of the country's first four Test victories. A schoolteacher,he later served as Rector of Southland Boys' High School in Invercargill.
George Fenwick Cresswell was a cricketer who played three Test matches for New Zealand. Born in Wanganui,he was the older brother of Arthur Cresswell. He was the 50th Test cap for New Zealand.
Donald Derek Beard was a New Zealand cricketer who played in four Test matches from 1952 to 1956. He was a schoolteacher and school principal.
Ian Bruce Leggat is a New Zealand former cricketer who played in one Test match in 1954. He was a middle-order batsman,a medium-pace bowler,and a slips fieldsman. His cousin,Gordon Leggat,also played Test cricket for New Zealand in the 1950s.
Bruce Donald Morrison is a former New Zealand cricketer who played one Test match in 1963. He bowled right-arm medium pace and was a left-handed tail-end batsman.
An English team raised by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) toured New Zealand between December 1906 and March 1907. The tour comprised two first-class matches against New Zealand,two each against the four main provincial teams –Auckland,Canterbury,Otago and Wellington –and one against Hawke's Bay. There were also five minor matches against teams from country areas.
Dennis John Vear was a New Zealand cricketer who played three first-class matches for Otago in the early 1960s. He also played for Southland in the Hawke Cup competition.
The Hawke's Bay cricket team,representing the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand,played first-class cricket between 1883–84 and 1920–21,and competed in the Plunket Shield in the 1914–15 and 1920–21 seasons. Anthony Warren Short is a former New Zealand cricketer who played three first class cricket matches and a single one day match for Central Districts between 1978 and 1980. A right-handed batsman,he struggled at first-class level,scoring only 96 runs from five innings –largely in a career-best knock of 33. He did,however,enjoy greater success as an all-rounder in District Cricket's Hawke Cup for Wairarapa,and as a bowler for Central District's under-23 team. He was also a very occasional right-arm medium bowler,who sent down a tidy yet wicket-less 64 balls.
Rex Sinclair Challies was a New Zealand cricketer for Central Districts and Wellington between 1947 and 1956,in a total of 17 first class cricket matches. A legbreak spin-bowler,he took 45 wickets at 37.08,and contributed 98 runs in the lower order.
Douglas Stuart St John was a New Zealand sportsman who played field hockey for the New Zealand national team and first class cricket for Otago and Wellington between the 1946–47 and 1956–57 seasons. A right-handed batsman,St. John played 34 first-class matches,scoring 1,236 runs at 20.94 with five half-centuries.
