David Banney (born 1968, Brisbane, Australia) [1] is an Australian conductor, composer and music educator. He is involved with various organisations and ensembles, including the Christ Church Cathedral, the Newcastle Music Festival, the Christ Church Camerata, and the Newcastle Cathedral College of Music. Banney is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia.
Banney is the director of music at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle, and the conductor of the Christ Church Camerata. [2] He is the artistic director of the Newcastle Music Festival. [3] Banney has conducted various ensembles in Australia, including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland, Queensland Ballet, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. [2] He has worked extensively with youth orchestras, including the Queensland Youth Orchestras,[ citation needed ] the European Medical Students Orchestras, [2] the Sydney Youth Philharmonic,[ citation needed ] and the Newcastle Strings Orchestra. As a composer, Banney has written for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and choirs.[ citation needed ]
In 2015, Banney completed a PhD thesis entitled Symmetry and Symmetry Breaking in Music.[ citation needed ] He has collaborated with other scholars for research, publishing with Giuseppe Caglioti on the subject of thermodynamics in music, and with Roger Smith on the subject of symmetry breaking in the synchronisation of uterine muscle behaviour during human labour.[ citation needed ] In 2018, Banney was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, [4] where he taught the course "Einstein, Bach and the Taj Mahal: Symmetry in the Arts, Sciences and Humanities". The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is a youth orchestra based in Boston, Massachusetts under the artistic leadership of music director, Federico Cortese. Since 1958, BYSO has served thousands of young musicians from throughout New England with three full symphonic orchestras, two young string training orchestras, six chamber orchestras, a preparatory wind ensemble, a chamber music program and a nationally recognized instrument training program for underrepresented youth from inner-city communities called the Intensive Community Program (ICP). The 2017-2018 season marks the celebration of BYSO's 60th Anniversary. Each year, BYSO auditions approximately 850 students from throughout New England, ages 5–18, and accepts nearly 500 young musicians.
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a South Australian orchestra based in Adelaide, established in 1936. The orchestra's primary performance venue is the Adelaide Town Hall, but the ASO also performs in other venues. It provides the orchestral support for all productions of the State Opera of South Australia and all Adelaide performances of the Australian Ballet. It also features regularly at the Adelaide Festival, and has performed at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, WOMAdelaide and several other festivals in Adelaide.

The Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States, established in 1924 as the Portland Junior Symphony (PJS). Now based in Portland, Oregon, the orchestra's origin dates back to 1910, when music teacher Mary V. Dodge began playing music for local children in Burns, Oregon. Dodge purchased instruments for the children and organized the orchestra, which would become known as the Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra. After touring the state, including a performance at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, the orchestra disbanded in 1918 when Dodge moved to Portland. There, Dodge opened a violin school and became music director of the Irvington School Orchestra.

Isaiah Allen Jackson is an American conductor who served a seven-year term as conductor of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, of which he has been named Conductor Emeritus. He was the first African-American to be appointed to a music directorship in the Boston area. Dr. Jackson currently teaches at the Berklee College of Music, the Harvard Extension School, and the Longy School of Music.

Kenneth Young is a composer, conductor, radio presenter and lecturer in composition, conducting and orchestration at the New Zealand School of Music, Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. As a composer, Young has had works commissioned by New Zealand and Australian orchestras and arts organisations including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra New Zealand International Arts Festival and Chamber Music New Zealand. He works as a freelance composer and is fully represented by SOUNZ: The Centre for New Zealand Music. In 1976, Young became the principal tuba for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and first conducted the orchestra in 1985 becoming Conductor in Residence in 1993. In 2001, he resigned from the orchestra to become a full-time conductor, composer and recording artist for orchestras in New Zealand and Australia, as well as engagements in Japan and the United Kingdom. He is well known for his interpretation of Romantic, 20th Century, New Zealand and Australian orchestral repertoire and in 2012 conducted both the winning album, Angel at Ahipara and finalist album, Releasing the Angel, for Best Classical Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. Young has been recorded by EMI, Atoll Records, Continuum, Trust Records, ABC Classics and Naxos and is a frequent presenter on RESOUND, Radio New Zealand Concert introducing and contextualising work from the RNZ archives. In 2004 was awarded the Lilburn Trust Citation in Recognition of Outstanding Services to New Zealand Music.
