David Binder (born October 28, 1967, in Los Angeles, California) is a Broadway, off-Broadway, and West End theater producer and artistic director of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. [1]

Career

In 1998 Binder presented the off-Broadway play De La Guarda , [2] and in 2007 produced Fuerzabruta , the show from the creators of De La Guarda.

Binder produced the first Broadway revival of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun , starring Sean Combs, Audra McDonald, Phylicia Rashad and Sanaa Lathan. The 2004 production won two Tony Awards for Best Actress [3] and Best Featured Actress in a Play. [4] He is an Executive Producer of the ABC television movie based on the Broadway production.

In 2006 he produced The Public Sings: A 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Public Theater with Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Ben Stiller and Mike Nichols, among others.

In 2011, Binder produced Short Ride in a Fast Machine, IBM’s Centennial Celebration at Lincoln Center. [5]

In March 2012, Binder produced Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth at the Sydney Opera House starring Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin. [6]

Binder taught at Princeton University where he was the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies in 2012/2013. [7]

Binder was guest artistic director of LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) which took place in June 2018. [8]

Binder produced Burn This [9] in 2019, with stars Adam Driver and Keri Russell, the 2018 production [10] of Network [11] starring Bryan Cranston, and the 2014 productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring Neil Patrick Harris [12] and Of Mice and Men starring James Franco and Chris O'Dowd. [13] Hedwig and the Angry Inch won four Tony Awards including Best Revival, [14] and Of Mice and Men became the first Broadway show to be filmed by the National Theatre of Great Britain’s NT Live and shown in cinemas around the world. [15]

Awards

He is the recipient of the Robert Whitehead Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatrical Producing, [16] and has been honored by Performance Space 122. [17]

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask and a book by John Cameron Mitchell. The musical follows Hedwig Robinson, a genderqueer East German singer of a fictional rock and roll band. The story draws on Mitchell's life as the child of a U.S. Army major general who once commanded the U.S. sector of occupied West Berlin. The character of Hedwig was inspired by a German divorced U.S. Army wife who was Mitchell's family babysitter and moonlighted as a prostitute at her trailer park home in Junction City, Kansas. <i>A Raisin in the Sun</i> 1959 play by Lorraine Hansberry

A Raisin in the Sun is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959. The title comes from the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes. The story tells of a black family's experiences in south Chicago, as they attempt to improve their financial circumstances with an insurance payout following the death of the father, and deals with matters of housing discrimination, racism, and assimilation. The New York Drama Critics' Circle named it the best play of 1959, and in recent years publications such as The Independent and Time Out have listed it among the best plays ever written.

The 68th Annual Tony Awards were held June 8, 2014, to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2013–14 season. The ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and was televised live on CBS. Hugh Jackman was the host, his fourth time hosting. The 15 musical Tony Awards went to seven different musicals, and six plays shared the 11 play Tony Awards.

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill is a jukebox musical featuring several of Billie Holiday's most famous songs. The play was written by Lanie Robertson and recounts some events in the life of Holiday. It premiered in 1986 at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, and soon played Off-Broadway. The play opened on Broadway in 2014, and also played in London's West End in 2017.

She made history by becoming the first person to play both Hedwig and Yitzhak in the same production during the national tour of the musical in 2016. Her other Broadway credits include Cats, 42nd Street, Dracula, the Musical and Tarzan, the Musical. Hall has also starred in Off-Broadway productions such as Radiant Baby, Bedbugs!!!, Rooms: A Rock Romance, The Toxic Avenger, Prometheus Bound, Chix6, Little Shop of Horrors, and the 2017 original play How to Transcend a Happy Marriage.

Frank Harts is an American film, television, and theatre actor. He played George Murchison in the 2004 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun opposite Sean Combs, Audra McDonald, Phylicia Rashad, and Sanaa Lathan. Harts has played supporting roles in several films, including the film Home directed by Jono Oliver, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture in 2014. He played recurring character Deputy Dennis Luckey on the HBO series The Leftovers created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta. He also played recurring character Dale Christo on the Showtime series Billions. Harts is a graduate of The Juilliard School.
