David Karl Brandl (born 19 April 1987) is an Austrian swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. [1] [2] He is a multiple-time Austrian champion, a four-time national record holder, and a current member of Perger Swimming Club (German : Perger Schwimmverein) in Perg. He also won a bronze medal, as a member of the Austrian swimming team, at the 2008 European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. [3]

Swimming career

Brandl qualified for the men's 400 m freestyle at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by attaining a B-standard entry time of 3:51.35 from the Austrian Swimming Championships, coincidentally in his home city Linz. [4] He won the second heat by twenty-one hundredths of a second (0.21) ahead of France's Sébastien Rouault, with an Austrian record-breaking time of 3:48.63. Brandl, however, failed to advance into the final, as he placed twentieth out of 37 swimmers in the evening preliminaries. [5] Three days later, Brandl swam on the second leg of the men's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, recording his fastest individual-split time of 1:46.45. Brandl and his teammates Markus Rogan, Dominik Koll, and Florian Janistyn finished heat two in fifth place and ninth overall, for another Austrian record time of 7:11.45. [6]

At the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, Brandl set an Austrian record in the 400 m freestyle, lowering his time to 3:47.61. The following year, Brandl achieved a fifth-place finish in the same event at the 2010 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, posting his best career time of 3:44.33. At the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, Brandl competed in two long-distance freestyle events, but achieved a slightly fair swimming performance. He finished twenty-fifth in the 400 m freestyle, and twenty-second in the 800 m freestyle, posting his slowest possible time of 3:54.73 and 8:05.66, respectively. [8] [9]

Four years after competing in his first Olympics, Brandl qualified for his second Austrian team, as a 25-year-old, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, by attaining a B-standard time of 1:48.95 in the men's 200 m freestyle. [10] He challenged seven other competitors on the third heat of his only individual event, including Canada's Blake Worsley and Israel's Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or. He came only in fifth place by 0.68 of a second ahead of Tunisia's Ahmed Mathlouthi, with a time of 1:49.00. Brandl, however, failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed twenty-seventh out of 41 swimmers in the morning's preliminary heats. [11] Two days later, Brandl reunited with his teammates Rogan, Janistyn, and Christian Scherübl for the men's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. Swimming the lead-off leg, Brandl recorded a time of 1:49.80, and the Austrian team went on to finish heat two in eighth place and sixteenth overall, for a total time of 7:17.94. [12]

2011 World Aquatics Championships 14th FINA World Championships

The 14th FINA World Championships were held on 16–31 July 2011 in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. The 2011 World Championships featured five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming. Giedrius Titenis Lithuanian swimmer

Giedrius Titenis is a Lithuanian swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. He is a four-time Olympian, a multiple-time Lithuanian record holder in the men's breaststroke, and a double swimming champion in the same discipline at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China. Titenis is also a member of Anykščiai Swimming Club, and is coached and trained by Žilvinas Ovsiukas.

Pál Joensen Faroese swimmer

Pál Joensen is a Faroese elite swimmer. He was born in Vágur, Suðuroy, Faroe Islands. He has won World and European Championship medals. His bronze medal in the men's 1500 metre freestyle at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships in Istanbul was the first medal won by a Faroese swimmer at the World Aquatic Championships.

Kenneth King-him To was a Hong Kong Australian swimmer who practised individual medley, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. He won 6 medals at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, was the male overall winner of the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup and was a World Championships silver medallist. He was the holder of 16 Hong Kong national swimming records.

Charles Houchin is an American former competition swimmer who has had his greatest international success in freestyle relay events. He earned a gold medal as a member of the winning United States team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He is the CEO and founder of Swimmingly. Florian Janistyn Austrian swimmer

Florian Janistyn is an Austrian swimmer, who specializes in long-distance freestyle events. He is a two-time Austrian national record holder in both 800 and 1500 m freestyle, and also, a current member of SG Wiener Neustadt, under his personal coach Erich Neulinger.

Raphaël Stacchiotti Luxembourgian swimmer

Raphaël Stacchiotti is a Luxembourgish swimmer, who specialized in the freestyle and individual medley events. He is a four-time Olympian, a multiple-time Luxembourgian record holder in all freestyle and medley events, and a double European junior champion. Stacchiotti also holds numerous meet records and collects a total of 49 medals from the Games of the Small States of Europe. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Stacchiotti became the youngest athlete to be chosen by the Luxembourg squad, and was given the honor of carrying the nation's flag in the opening ceremony.

Glenn Surgeloose is a Belgian swimmer, who specializes in sprint freestyle events. He collected a bronze medal in the 200 m freestyle at the 2007 European Junior Swimming Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. Surgeloose is a member of Brabo Antwerp, and is coached and trained by Ronald Gaastra.

Park Seon-Kwan is a South Korean swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. He won a bronze medal, as a member of the South Korean swimming team, in the 400 m freestyle relay at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. He also collected two silver medals in the 100 and 200 m backstroke at the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong, China. Park is a member of the swimming team at Korea National Sports University in Seoul.

Pieter Timmers Belgian swimmer

Pieter Timmers is a Belgian retired competitive swimmer who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He won the silver medal in the 100 meter freestyle at the 2016 Olympics. Timmers currently holds nine Belgian records, and seven national titles in long and short course freestyle. Timmers is a resident athlete for Brabo Antwerp, and trains under his personal coach Ronald Gaastra. He stands 2.00 m, and weighs 89 kg (196 lb). He ended his career in Budapest in the second season of the International Swimming League in 2020.

Back Su-Yeon is a South Korean swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She edged out her teammate Jung Seul-Ki to take a bronze medal by 0.31 of a second in the 200 m breaststroke at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, with a time of 1:10.22. Back is also a member of Kang-won-do Cheong swimming club in Seoul. Previously in 2006, Back had won bronze in the 100 m breaststroke at the 2006 Asian Games.

Katarína Listopadová is a Slovak swimmer, who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley events. She currently holds four Slovak records in the freestyle relays. Listopadova is also a resident athlete for J&T Sport Team Bratislava, and is coached and trained by Gabriel Baran.

Christian Scherübl Austrian swimmer

Christian Scherübl is an Austrian swimmer, who specialized in long-distance and relay freestyle events. Within a 16-year and younger age group, Scherubl set an Austrian record time of 4:05.20 in the boys' 400 m freestyle at the 2010 Geneva Long Course International Meet in Geneva, Switzerland. Scherubl is also a member of the swimming team for ATUS Graz, and is coached and trained by Christoph Schreiner.

Yoris Grandjean Belgian Olympic swimmer

Yoris Grandjean is a Belgian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He won two gold medals at the 2006 FINA Youth World Swimming Championships, and later represented Belgium at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since 2009, he still currently holds a Belgian record (22.13) in the 50 m freestyle from the national championships in Antwerp. Grandjean also trains for Liège Swimming Club under his head coach Andre Henvaux.

Travis Mahoney is an Australian medley and backstroke swimmer. Winner of two relay medals at the 2012 World Short Course Championships, he is also part of the quartet that broke the world record in the short course mixed 4 × 50 metres freestyle relay. In 2016, he qualified for his first Olympic Games.
