The United States secretary of energy is the head of the United States Department of Energy, a member of the Cabinet of the United States, and fifteenth in the presidential line of succession. The position was formed on October 1, 1977 with the creation of the Department of Energy when President Jimmy Carter signed the Department of Energy Organization Act. Originally the post focused on energy production and regulation. The emphasis soon shifted to developing technology for better and more efficient energy sources as well as energy education. After the end of the Cold War, the department's attention also turned toward radioactive waste disposal and maintenance of environmental quality.
The Associate Attorney General of the United States is the third-ranking official in the U.S. Department of Justice. The Associate Attorney General advises and assists the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General in policies relating to civil justice, federal and local law enforcement, and public safety matters. The Associate Attorney General is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. On January 21, 2021, it was announced that President Joe Biden had appointed Matthew Colangelo, who most recently worked in the Office of the Attorney General of New York, to serve as Acting Associate Attorney General while the Senate considers the nomination of Vanita Gupta to serve as Associate Attorney General.

Most recently, Palm served as Secretary-designee of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (2019–2021) in the administration of Governor Tony Evers. She previously worked as a senior staffer in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and White House policy advisor during the presidency of Barack Obama and was an aide to Hillary Clinton during her time in the United States Senate.
Members of the Cabinet of the United States in the Biden administration will assume office after the inauguration of President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021, and after confirmation by the United States Senate. In addition to the 15 heads of executive departments, there will be nine Cabinet-level officials, with three positions being elevated to Cabinet-level, and one position being dropped.
Following his victory in 2020, Biden had 4,000 political appointments to make to the federal government. Of those 4,000 political appointments, more than 1250 require Senate confirmation. Upon taking office, Biden quickly placed more than 1,000 high-level officials who did not require confirmation into office. President Biden will make many appointments and nominations to serve in various roles in the Department of Defense. These include the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.
