David J. Lane (born c. 1960) was named president of the Annenberg Foundation Trust in September 2016. [1] [2] The non-profit organization operates the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage,California. [3] Lane is chairman of The Stimson Center. [4]
Previously,Lane was United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture,serving in Rome,Italy,and chief of the United States Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome. Before that he held several positions in the U.S. federal government and with philanthropic organizations,including being President and Chief Executive Officer of the ONE Campaign.
Lane was born c. 1960.[ citation needed ] Lane grew up in Indialantic,Florida,and graduated from nearby Melbourne High School in 1978. [5] He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia,[ when? ] and then a Master of Public Affairs from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.[ when? ] [6]
Lane worked as a legislative assistant focusing in the area of foreign policy in the United States Congress for Senator Gary Hart. [6] [7]
From 1993 to 2000,Lane worked for the U.S. federal government during the Clinton administration. [7] These included being Chief of Staff to the United States Secretary of Commerce,William M. Daley,and Executive Director of the National Economic Council. [6] [8]
In 2001,Lane was hired by the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation,as part of expanding its presence in Washington,D.C.,and maturing as a philanthropic organization. [9] Lane served as Director of Public Policy and External Affairs,Director of Foundation Advocacy,and Director of the East Coast Office for the foundation,where he had responsibility for that organization's advocacy and public policy work on a range of matters that included global development and global health. [6] [7] He was a Gates Foundation representative to Bono's DATA organization that focused on problems in Africa. [5]
In 2007,DATA merged into the ONE Campaign,and Lane was named as president and chief executive of the latter. [10] He emphasized the organization's purpose in fighting global extreme poverty and disease and urged leading countries to continue their commitment to bettering Africa,even during the 2007–2008 financial crisis. Lane also served as vice-chair of the board of Transparency International USA,and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. [6]
In early 2011,Lane joined the Obama administration during a period of staff change,serving as Assistant to the President of the United States and Counselor to the Chief of Staff in the White House,once again working for William M. Daley. [6] [8]
Lane was nominated by President Barack Obama on April 16,2012,to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. [6] The United States Senate confirmed Ambassador Lane on May 24,2012. [6] He was officially sworn into the position on July 19,2012. [12]
During his time as Ambassador Lane coordinated strategies among six different agencies. [2] He acted as a champion of the Feed the Future Initiative. [2]

Upon accepting the Annenberg position in September 2016,Lane said,"Sunnylands seems to me,especially at a time when our system so desperately needs a reset,to have the potential to bring people together across ideological boundaries." [2]

Annenberg owned and operated Triangle Publications, which included ownership of The Philadelphia Inquirer, TV Guide, the Daily Racing Form and Seventeen magazine. Leonore Cohn Annenberg, also known as Lee Annenberg, was an American businesswoman, diplomat, and philanthropist. She was noted for serving as Chief of Protocol of the United States from 1981 to 1982. Annenberg was married to Walter Annenberg, who was an Ambassador to the United Kingdom and newspaper publisher. She also served as the chairman and president of the Annenberg Foundation from 2002 until 2009.
David Pressman is an American lawyer who has been serving as the United States ambassador to Hungary since 2022. Sunnylands is the former Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage, California. The 200-acre (0.81 km2) property is currently run by The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, a not-for-profit organization. The property was owned by Walter and Leonore Annenberg until 2009 and had been used as a winter retreat by the couple beginning in 1966, when the house was completed. The city of Rancho Mirage considers the property to be “rich with historical significance” and declared Sunnylands a historic site in 1990. Located at Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope Drives, the property has been the vacation site of numerous celebrities and public officials. Sunnylands is sometimes referred to as the "Camp David of the West."
The United States Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome serves as a link between the Rome-based international organizations and the U.S. government. Geoffrey Cowan is an American lawyer, professor, author, and non-profit executive. He is a University Professor at the University of Southern California, where he holds the Annenberg Family Chair in Communication Leadership and directs the Annenberg School's Center on Communication Leadership & Policy. In 2010, Cowan was named president of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, a position he held until July 2016. In this role, Cowan was commissioned with the task of turning the 200-acre estate of Ambassador Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore into "a venue for important retreats for top government officials and leaders in the fields of law, education, philanthropy, the arts, culture, science and medicine." Since Sunnylands reopened in 2012, Cowan has helped to arrange a series of meetings and retreats there. In 2013–14, President Barack Obama convened bilateral meetings at Sunnylands with President Xi Jinping of China and with King Abdullah II of Jordan. In 2016, President Obama hosted the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the site, where they released the Sunnylands Declaration. Prior to his time at Sunnylands, Cowan was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Director of Voice of America.
