David J. Mayernik (born June 15,1952) is a former Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Born on June 15,1952,Mayernik is a 1970 graduate of North Hills High School. [3] He earned an Associate of Arts degree from the Allegheny Community College in 1972 and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. In 1975,he graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy. [3] He then earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 and a Juris Doctor from the Widener University School of Law in 1993. [3]
Mayernik was first elected to represent the 29th legislative district in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1982. During his legislative career,he had eleven prime sponsored bills and twenty-one amendments signed into law by four governors. [4]
During the decennial legislative redistricting process,following the 2000 census,his district was divided into seven other districts and moved across the state from Allegheny County to Bucks County,Pennsylvania by the House Democratic Caucus in the 2002 legislative re-apportionment plan,leaving him "scant chance of re-election." [5] Democratic leaders were unhappy that he had crossed party lines and otherwise disobeying caucus leaders. [5] He said,"They terminated me. This was Politics 101. It sends a message:Don't step out of line. Right now,I expect to be running. I'm just not sure where I'll be running." [5] Instead,he retired prior to the 2002 election. [5]
In a 2002 PoliticsPA Feature story designating politicians with yearbook superlatives,he was named the "Toughest to Work For." [6]
Mayernik has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and as an instructor at the Allegheny County Police Academy. He is currently practicing law with the Pittsburgh law firm of Eckert Seamans. [4]
Melissa Ann Hart is an American lawyer and politician. She was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007,representing western Pennsylvania's 4th congressional district. She was the first Republican woman to represent Pennsylvania at the federal level. Prior to her service in Congress,Hart served in the Pennsylvania Senate,where she chaired the finance committee. She was the first Republican woman elected to serve a full term in the Pennsylvania Senate in 1990 when she was 28 years old. In her first run for office,Hart defeated an incumbent in a senate district that included parts of Allegheny,Westmoreland and Armstrong counties. In the 2006 midterm elections,Hart lost her bid for re-election to Democrat Jason Altmire. She challenged Altmire again in the 2008 election,but was defeated again.
Jeffrey Earl Habay is a former Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives,who was elected to represent the 30th legislative district in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1994 at the age of 28. A native of O'Hara Township,Pennsylvania,he was considered a rising star in the Republican party,eventually being named by his caucus to the position of Majority Deputy Whip. In 2006 he resigned his position after being found guilty of violations of the state Ethics Code,alleging false antrax attacks and using state staffers for personal use.
