Charles David Yates (born June 3,1980) is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Kentucky Senate from the 37th district. Elected in November 2020,he assumed office on January 1,2021.
Yates was born in Louisville,Kentucky. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Louisville in 2003 and a Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University in 2006. [1]
Yates began his career as a law clerk for Judge William Bertelsman. From 2006 to 2008,Yates served as an assistant attorney general of Kentucky. He has since worked as a personal injury attorney. Yates served as a member of the Louisville Metro Council from 2010 to 2020. He was elected to the Kentucky Senate in November 2020 and assumed office on January 1,2021. [2] [3]

The Kentucky Senate is the upper house of the Kentucky General Assembly. The Kentucky Senate is composed of 38 members elected from single-member districts throughout the Commonwealth. There are no term limits for Kentucky senators. The Kentucky Senate meets at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort annually beginning in January. Sessions last for 60 legislative days in even-numbered years and 30 legislative days in odd-numbered years.
The Louisville Metro Council is the city council of Louisville,Kentucky. It was formally established in January 2003 upon the merger of the former City of Louisville with Jefferson County and replaced the city's Board of Aldermen and the county's Fiscal Court. Louisville City Hall houses the offices and chambers of the council.
The Kentucky Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is currently the minority party in the state,as the rival Republican Party of Kentucky overwhelmingly dominates in the state legislature,congressional delegation,and presidential elections. However,the party does currently control the governorship and lieutenant governorship,and maintains some strength in local elections.

Same-sex sexual activity in Kentucky has been legally permitted since 1992,although the state legislature has not repealed its sodomy statute for same-sex couples. Same-sex marriage is legal in Kentucky under the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. The decision,which struck down Kentucky's statutory and constitutional bans on same-sex marriages and all other same-sex marriage bans elsewhere in the country,was handed down on June 26,2015.

John Morgan McGarvey is an American attorney and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Kentucky's 3rd congressional district since 2023. Kulkarni is the first Indian-American elected as a state representative in Kentucky.

Keturah Joy Herron is an American politician from Kentucky. They are a Democrat and represent District 42 in the State House. When elected in 2022,they were the first out LGBTQ+ member in the Kentucky House of Representatives. They are only the second out member of the Kentucky General Assembly following Ernesto Scorsone,former state senator,who came out while in office in 2003. After Scorsone left the legislature in 2008,there was no LGBTQ+ representation in either chamber until Herron.
