Dawa Yangzum Sherpa also known as Dawa Yangzum is a Nepalese mountain climber and the first woman to become an international mountain guide from Nepal. [1]

Life

Dawa Yangzum started her professional mountain climbing in 2009 with Yala Peak marking her first summit. She has climbed thirteen of the fourteen 8000ers so far. She became one of the iconic Nepali mountain climbers in the history after climbing Mount Everest in 2012. [2] In 2017, she received a certification from the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association and qualified to become an international mountain guide in the same year. [1] [3] In March 2019, she signed a professional agreement with a US outdoor recreation product company, making her one of the few professional Nepali mountaineers to be paid as an athlete by a major western company. [4]

Dawa Yangzum has climbed Everest several times [5] and she became the first female Nepali woman to summit the fifth highest peak Makalu on 29 May 2019. [6] [7] On 26 July 2014, she was part of the all female 3-member Nepali contingent to summit K2. The other prominent members were Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita and Maya Sherpa. [4] She also became the first woman to reach the true summit of Manaslu in autumn 2021. [8]

The eight-thousanders are the 14 mountains recognized by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) as being more than 8,000 metres (26,247 ft) in height above sea level, and sufficiently independent of neighbouring peaks. Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres (26,781 ft) above sea level. It is in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in west-central Nepal. Manaslu means "mountain of the spirit" and the word is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul". Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956, by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition. It is said that, given the many unsuccessful attempts by the British to climb Everest before Nepali Tenzing Norgay and New Zealander Edmund Hillary, "just as the British consider Everest their mountain, Manaslu has always been a Japanese mountain".

Adrian Ballinger is a British-American certified IFMGA/AMGA mountain guide, certified through the American Mountain Guides Association and a sponsored climber and skier. Ballinger is the founder and CEO of Alpenglow Expeditions, and has been guiding full-time for 25 years. He has led over 150 international climbing expeditions on six continents, and made 18 successful summits of 8,000m peaks. He is known for pioneering the use of pre-acclimatization for commercial expeditions as early as 2012, which can cut the amount of time typically spent on an expedition in half. Asian Trekking is a Nepal-based adventure company, specializing in mountaineering expeditions and trekking in the Himalayas. Started in 1982 by UIAA Honorary Member Ang Tshering Sherpa, it is Nepal's oldest mountaineering and trekking company still in operation. Lhakpa Sherpa is a Nepalese Sherpa mountain climber. She has climbed Mount Everest ten times, the most by any woman in the world. Her record-breaking tenth climb was on May 12, 2022, which she financed via a crowd-funding campaign. In 2000, she became the first Nepali woman to climb and descend Everest successfully. In 2016, she was listed as one of BBC's 100 Women.

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita is a Nepali Sherpa mountaineer. She was the first woman in Nepal to become a mountaineering instructor, was one of the first Nepali women to reach the summit of K2, and has been active in earthquake relief in Nepal. In 2016, she was named National Geographic's People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year, and was presented with the 45th International Alpine Solidarity Award in Pinzolo, Italy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nirmal Purja</span> Nepalese-British mountaineer

Nirmal Purja is a Nepal-born naturalised British mountaineer. Prior to taking on a career in mountaineering, he served in the British Army with the Brigade of Gurkhas followed by the Special Boat Service (SBS), the special forces unit of the Royal Navy. Purja is notable for having climbed all 14 eight-thousanders in a time of six months and six days with the aid of bottled oxygen between April and October 2019. This was a record at the time of climbing, although it was broken in 2023 by Kristin Harila and Tenjen Sherpa, who summitted all 14 eight-thousanders in 92 days. Purja was the first person to reach the summits of Mount Everest, Lhotse and Makalu within 48 hours. In 2021, Purja, along with a team of nine other Nepalese climbers, completed the first winter ascent of K2.

He has also climbed the Seven Summits. Everest, Denali, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro Aconcagua, Vinson and Kosciuszko.

Tenjen Sherpa, also known as Tenjen Lama Sherpa, was a Nepalese mountaineer who climbed all 14 eight-thousander together with Kristin Harila in 92 days. He went missing after an avalanche hit on Shishapangma on 7 October 2023. He was declared dead by Chinese authorities on 8 October 2023.

Nima Rinji Sherpa : is a Nepalese mountaineer recognized by the Guinness World Records as the youngest person to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks. Achieving this milestone at 18 years, 5 months, and 21 days, Nima completed his record-breaking accomplishment over a period of just 740 days. He reached his final summit on October 9, 2024, at Shishapangma in China, marking the last of the fourteen highest mountains in the world.
