Dawnna Mathilda Dukes (born September 3,1963) is a former Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives. First elected in 1994,Dukes represented Districts 50 and 46 (East Austin) within Travis County from 1995 to 2019. [1]
In 2017,Dukes was indicted by a grand jury on 13 felony charges and two misdemeanor charges related to abuse of public office. Later that year,all criminal charges against Dukes were dropped,with prosecutors saying the charges should not have been brought forward. Dukes announced plans to resign her seat but changed her mind and ran for re-election. [2] She was defeated in the Democratic primary election on March 6,2018. [3]
After attending Texas A&M University,Dukes graduated with a B.S. in psychology. She worked as a criminal justice facilities planner from 1987 to 1993. Dukes then became the owner/ business consultant for DM Dukes and Associates,Inc.,a consulting firm. Dukes is a member of the Flemming Fellowship Program,Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority,Center for Policy Alternative,Leadership Austin,and the Atlanta Council of Young Political Leaders. [4]
Dukes served in every legislative session from 1995–2018. [5] In re-elections from 2008–2016,Dukes won by a margin of over 50 points. [6] In 2018,she was defeated in the Democratic primary,receiving 10% of the vote,and coming in third in a field of six candidates. [7]
Dukes served on the following committees:member of the Appropriations Committee,member of the International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs,Vice Chair of Article II Subcommittee,and Vice Chair of Culture,Recreation,and Tourism. [8]
Dukes was named one of the "Worst Legislators" in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine in 2017. [9]
On January 18,2017,a Travis County grand jury indicted Dukes on 15 criminal indictments (13 felonies and 2 misdemeanors) for tampering with a governmental record and abuse of official capacity by a public servant. [10] [11] According to the Austin American Statesman,"The 13 charges for tampering with public records concern allegations that Dukes collected pay from the state during the 2014 legislative interim for days that she did not travel to the Capitol,which is required under House rules. The American-Statesman in May reported that a former Dukes staffer had accused the legislator of filing requests for per diem payments for days that she never traveled to the Capitol and may not have worked at all." [12] In addition,Dukes is also accused of failing to turn over her personal cell phone to investigators and spending over $50,000 on online psychic services. [13]
On October 23,2017,Travis County prosecutors dropped all charges against Dukes with prosecutors stating the charges should have never been filed in the first place. [14]

Ronald Dale Earle was an American politician and judge who was,from January 1977 to January 2009,the District Attorney for Travis County,Texas. He became nationally known for filing charges against House majority leader Tom DeLay in September 2005 for conspiring to violate Texas' election law and/or to launder money. In Texas,Earle was known for his criminal justice reform efforts which focused on crime prevention,alternative sentencing,victim advocacy,and the reintegration of former offenders into society. In 1983,Earle –an Eagle Scout –prosecuted himself for an election law violation after missing a campaign finance filing deadline by one day;he was fined $212. Earle was a fixture in Travis County politics and served in public office there for more than 30 years,joking that he was asked if he was the "District Eternity".
James W. Ellis is a political lobbyist self-described in 2018 as "a 35-year veteran of politics at the state and national levels". Ellis began his career with the San Diego County Republican Party,and then served as an original staff member for then-Congressman Bill Lowery (R-CA). He also worked as President of the Ramhurst Corporation of North Carolina and as a manager of the Public Issues Department of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem,North Carolina.
Tom DeLay,a Republican U.S. Representative from Texas from 1979–83,and from 1985–2006 and the House Majority Leader from 2003–05,was convicted in 2010 of money laundering and conspiracy charges related to illegal campaign finance activities aimed at helping Republican candidates for Texas state office in the 2002 elections. In 2013,a Texas Court of Appeals panel acquitted DeLay when it overturned his conviction. This decision was affirmed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on October 1,2014. DeLay had three years from that date,i.e. until October 1,2017,to file any lawsuits for wrongful action.

On August 15,2014,Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted by a Travis County grand jury,but has since been cleared on all charges. The first charge of the indictment was abuse of official capacity,a first-degree felony,for threatening to veto $7.5 million in funding for the Public Integrity Unit,a state public corruption prosecutors department. The second charge,which has since been ruled unconstitutional,was coercion of a public servant,a third-degree felony,for seeking the resignation of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg,a Democrat,after she was convicted of drunk driving and incarcerated. Lehmberg was a district attorney in Travis County,Texas,and the Travis County DA's office managed the Public Integrity Unit's operations. The veto was seen as retribution for Lehmberg not stepping down. Perry pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Ronald Eugene Reynolds is an American politician and disbarred lawyer who represents District 27 in the Texas House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2010. Reynolds is the first African American elected to represent Fort Bend County in the Texas House of Representatives since the Reconstruction era.

On March 28,2019,Javier Ambler II died of heart failure while being arrested by police in Austin,Texas,after fleeing from deputies who sought to stop him for a traffic violation. Ambler was tased multiple times by authorities. Video of Ambler's death,recorded by police officers,was obtained and released by news organizations in June 2020. During the arrest Ambler repeatedly stated "I can't breathe" and "please save me" before dying. Ambler's death was recorded by a Live PD television crew,and the recording has since been destroyed,according to A&E Networks.
The 2022 Texas lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 8,2022,to elect the lieutenant governor of the state of Texas. The election coincided with various other federal and state elections,including for governor of Texas. Primary elections were held on March 1,with runoffs being held on May 24 for instances in which no candidate received a majority of the initial vote. Texas is one of 21 states that elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor.
