Dead Souls is a 2018 documentary film directed by Wang Bing and documents the testimony of survivors of the hard-labor camp in the Gobi Desert in Gansu, China.The film was shot from 2005 to 2017 and covers most of China's provinces, visiting more than 120 survivors of the Jiabiangou and Mingshui reeducation camps, which were set up by China's Communist regime in the late 1950s. The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. [1] [2] [3]
Life Is Beautiful is a 1997 Italian comedy-drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote the film with Vincenzo Cerami. Landscape After the Battle is a 1970 Polish drama film directed by Andrzej Wajda and starring Daniel Olbrychski; telling a story of a Nazi German concentration camp survivor soon after liberation, residing in a DP camp somewhere in Germany. It is based on the writings of Holocaust survivor and Polish author Tadeusz Borowski. In most part, the plot revolves around the events depicted in Borowski's short story called "Bitwa pod Grunwaldem" from his collection This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen. Jiabiangou Labor Camp is a former farm labor camp (laogai) located in the area under the administration of Jiuquan in the northwestern desert region of Gansu Province. The camp was in use during the Anti-Rightist Campaign in the years from 1957 to 1961. During its operation, it held approximately 3,000 political prisoners, of whom about 2,500 died at Jiabiangou, mostly of starvation.

The film, on the subject of Chinese forced-labour camps during early 1960 Maoist China era, was chosen to be the film sorpresa in the 2010 Venice Film Festival.

It is an international co-production between China, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The film focuses on a group of young textile workers in the Chinese town of Zhili. It is the first entry in a trilogy of films that follow the same characters over an extended period of time.
