Constable Debashish Sethy, SC [2] was an Indian Police Constable of the Odisha Police's [3] Special Operations Group (SOG) who was posthumously conferred India's third highest peacetime gallantry award, the Shaurya Chakra. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

Career

Debashish began his career with the Odisha Police Department as a constable before joining the SOG in 2016. He was from Angul district. [10] [11]

The Commando was killed in action in the deep forest near Sirki village in Kalahandi district on September 9, 2020, while in combat with members of the left wing extremism group during an anti-Maoist operation. Five terrorists were killed as a result of the operation. [12] [13]

The President of India posthumously awarded him the Shaurya Chakra, which was presented to his family by Angul SP Jagmohan Meena on August 15, 2021, in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice. [2] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]

The Balimela reservoir boat attack occurred on 29 June 2008 when Communist Party of India (Maoist) forces ambushed a boat on the Balimela Reservoir in Odisha, India carrying 60 Greyhounds commandos, 5 police officers, and a boat operator. The boat sunk, killing 38 people, while 27 survived.

Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, AC was a member of the Garud Commando Force. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration in January 2018. He is the first airman to receive the award for ground combat and only the third one to receive it overall after Suhas Biswas and Rakesh Sharma.

Assistant Sub-inspector Babu Ram, AC (1972–2020) was a Police Officer of the Special Operations Group (SOG) Srinagar, who was awarded the highest peace time gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra.

Major Anuj Sood, SC was an Indian Army Officer who received the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. He was a member of the 19th Battalion, Brigade of Guards and 21st Rashtriya Rifles Battalion. He was martyred in action while serving with the latter in Handwara, Jammu and Kashmir.
