Local government in New Mexico consists of counties and municipalities.
The former Santa Fe Railway Shops in Albuquerque,New Mexico,consist of eighteen surviving buildings erected between 1915 and 1925. The complex is located south of downtown in the Barelas neighborhood,bounded by Second Street,Hazeldine Avenue,Commercial Street,and Pacific Avenue. The shops were one of four major maintenance facilities constructed by the Atchison,Topeka and Santa Fe Railway,the others being located in Topeka,Kansas,Cleburne,Texas,and San Bernardino,California. The railway shops were the largest employer in the city during the railroad's heyday. Currently they have been empty for years but a variety of plans have been proposed for the historic complex.
Linda M. Lopez is an American politician and businesswoman serving as a member of the New Mexico Senate from the 11th district. Lopez has also served as the chair of the Bernalillo County Democratic Party since 2003.
Larry Delgado is an American politician who served as the mayor of Santa Fe,New Mexico from 1998 to 2006. He previously served two terms on the Santa Fe City Council,from 1990 to 1998.
Susana Martinez is an American politician and attorney who served as 31st governor of New Mexico from 2011 to 2019. Barelas is an inner-city neighborhood of Albuquerque,New Mexico,located immediately south of Downtown. It consists of the triangular area bounded by Coal Avenue,the BNSF railroad tracks,and the Rio Grande. Originally a separate village,it was absorbed into Albuquerque during the railroad-fueled growth of the 1880s but still retains a distinct identity. The settlement was formally established in 1662,predating even Old Town as the oldest neighborhood in the city. Although it was long one of Albuquerque's most economically distressed areas,Barelas has seen significant development since the opening of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2000 and may be starting to experience gentrification.

A Democrat,she represented Legislative District 41 located in Rio Arriba,Santa Fe,and Taos Counties. In 2018,she was defeated for renomination in the Democratic primary by Susan K. Herrera.

Berry,the incumbent mayor,did not seek reelection. This was the first mayoral election in Albuquerque without an incumbent candidate in twenty years. All candidates ran on the same ballot. No candidate reached 50% of the vote in the initial round held on October 3,and so a runoff election was held November 14 between the top two finishers.

Bernadette Vigil is an American artist and illustrator whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and abroad. She has produced permanent public artworks in the form of fresco murals for the cities of Santa Fe and Albuquerque,New Mexico. She has been commissioned to create religious frescoes in churches in New Mexico,and has been called a "master of the art of buon fresco" in the Santos Tradition. She has authored a book on Toltec spirituality,Mastery of Awareness:Living the Agreements. In 2002 it was published in Spanish as El Dominio de la Conciencia,and in 2005 it was published in German as Das Geheimnis der vier Versprechen.
A special election to determine the member of the United States House of Representatives for New Mexico's 3rd congressional district was held on May 13,1997. Republican Bill Redmond defeated Democrat Eric Serna in a result which flipped this heavily Democratic seat to the Republican column. Redmond replaced Bill Richardson,who resigned from his seat in the House after he was appointed by Bill Clinton to be the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
Laura M. Montoya is an American politician from New Mexico. A member of the Democratic Party,she is the New Mexico State Treasurer.
