Deborah Ann Manning ONZM is a New Zealand lawyer and charity founder. Manning founded food sharing charity KiwiHarvest,and a sister charity the New Zealand Food Network to redistribute food more efficiently and reduce environmental pollution from food waste. In 2024 Manning was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community and the environment.
Manning was born in London where her father was studying medicine. [1] The family returned to New Zealand when Manning was three,and settled in Palmerston North. Manning attended NgāTawa boarding school in Marton. [1] Manning is a qualified physiotherapist and lawyer,having studied physiotherapy at Otago Polytechnic and completed her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Otago in Dunedin. [2] [3] [4]
Manning worked a physiotherapist and then as a lawyer and lecturer,before founding a food sharing organisation (initially named FoodShare and now called KiwiHarvest) in 2012. [2] She had read newspaper articles about people gathering food from dumpsters,alongside articles about child poverty and food insecurity. [2] [5] KiwiHarvest collects and redistributes food that can’t be sold for reasons such as damaged packaging,cancelled orders,mislabelling or short-dated. [5] Manning initially worked in Dunedin,using her own car to collect unwanted food and redistribute it through social service agencies and food banks. [2] By 2024,KiwiHarvest was operating five branches nationally,and had delivered 12 million kilograms of food to more than 220 charitable organisations. [6] [5] Manning's brother,former All Black David Kirk,chairs the board of KiwiHarvest. [7]
In 2020 Manning founded the New Zealand Food Network. [6] The network created a national food distribution network with more than 65 hubs,and is aimed at creating a more efficient redistribution system for large volumes of food. [6] [2] The network provides food assistance to more than 650,000 people each month. [6]
Manning is a panel member of organisation New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3,which provides education,advocacy and strategy about food rescue,towards the Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 of halving New Zealand's food waste by 2030. [6] [8]
In 2022 Manning was named Sustainability Superstar at the Sustainable Business Network’s Sustainable Business Awards. [2] [9] She has been named as a Distinguished Alumni of Otago Polytechnic,and was one of the 2023 Top 50 Women in Food &Drink in Aotearoa New Zealand. [3] [10] In 2022 KiwiHarvest jointly won the not-for-profit category at The Grand Business South Awards. [2] Manning was a finalist in the Community Hero section of the Women of Influence Awards in 2020,and a semi-finalist in the 2022 Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year awards. [11] [12]
In the 2024 King's Birthday Honours,Manning was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community and the environment. [6]
The New Zealand royal honours system,a system of orders,decorations and medals,recognises achievements of,or service by,New Zealanders or others in connection with New Zealand. Until 1975,New Zealand used the British honours system. Since then the country has introduced a number of uniquely New Zealand honours,and as of 2021,only the dynastic British honours continue in active use in New Zealand,with the exception of the Order of the Companions of Honour.

Deborah Ann Challinor is a New Zealand writer and historian. Challinor published her twenty-first book in 2024. In 2018 she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature and historical research.
Judith Catherine Trotter is a New Zealand diplomat. In 1996,Trotter was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to diplomacy. She has also been awarded a New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal,a New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal,and France's National Order of Merit.
Fleur De Lyse Ross Sullivan is a New Zealand restaurateur and author. In 1999,Sullivan was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit,for services to tourism,and in 2013 she was promoted to Companion of the same order,for services to the food industry.

Barbara Eva Hochstein is a German–New Zealand radiologist,and radiology educator. She is one of New Zealand's longest-serving radiologists,and has led the establishment of mobile breastscreening services,the use of pregnancy scans for family violence detection,and the provision of out-of-hours radiology advice across Australia and New Zealand. In 2024 Hochstein was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to radiology and education.
Caroline Irena Seelig is a New Zealand academic administrator,and was chief executive of the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. She has contributed to vocational education and distance learning for more than thirty years. In 2024 Seelig was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education.
Virginia Margaret Radford is a New Zealand girl guide leader. In 1997 she was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for community service,and in 2016 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Girl Guides.
