Debra Baptist-Estrada is the Director of the Immigration Department in Belize. In 2016 she received the International Women of Courage Award. In 2019 she became the Director of the Immigration Department.
Estrada has an associate degree [1] and she became Port Commander of Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport [2] which is international airport for Belize City. She started work in the airport's immigration department in the mid 1990s. In 2015 she discovered a smuggling organization that was of interest to US authorities as they were smuggling drugs and people to the United States [3] and Europe. She then worked on security at the Belize's northern border. [4] Estrada was an immigration officer at the Santa Elena Border in Corozal. [5] She continued to refuse bribes and enforce the immigration laws. She has "consistently refused bribes and other incentives to look the other way." [4]
In 2016 she was invited to Washington, where she received the International Women of Courage Award from the US Secretary of State John Kerry. The award has been given since 2007 [6] and it recognises women leaders. [7] The award is presented every year on 8 March (International Women's Day). After receiving the award, the 14 awardees gave talks and then met again on 1 April. [4]
In 2019 she was approved by the Cabinet in Belize as the new Director of the Immigration Department. The appointment was made despite there being better academically qualified candidates. It was noted that some of her colleagues had in the past had US visas refused whereas Estrada was recognised by the United States Embassy for her integrity. She would move from the nationality section to take over from Diana Locke. [1]
The following year immigration became a major issue when in March Belizeans returned to their country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Baptist-Estrada assured all of those abroad that they would be welcome to return, but their health would be checked and they would be asked to self-isolate. [8]

Arlie Oswald Petters, MBE is a Belizean-American mathematical physicist, who is the Benjamin Powell Professor of mathematics and a professor of physics and economics at Duke University. Petters became the provost at New York University Abu Dhabi effective September 1, 2020. Petters is a founder of mathematical astronomy, focusing on problems connected to the interplay of gravity and light and employing tools from astrophysics, cosmology, general relativity, high energy physics, differential geometry, singularities, and probability theory. His monograph "Singularity Theory and Gravitational Lensing" developed a mathematical theory of gravitational lensing. Petters was also the dean of academic affairs for Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and associate vice provost for undergraduate education at Duke University (2016-2019).
The monarchy of Belize is a system of government in which a hereditary monarch is the sovereign and head of state of Belize. The current Belizean monarch and head of state since 8 September 2022, is King Charles III. As sovereign, he is the personal embodiment of the Belizean Crown. Although the person of the sovereign is shared with 14 other independent countries within the Commonwealth of Nations, each country's monarchy is separate and legally distinct. As a result, the current monarch is officially titled Kingof Belize and, in this capacity, he and other members of the royal family undertake public and private functions as representatives of the Belizean state. However, the King is the only member of the royal family with any constitutional role.
Indo-Belizeans, also known as East Indian Belizeans, are citizens of Belize of Indian ancestry. The community made up 3.9% of the population of Belize in 2010. They are part of the wider Indo-Caribbean community, which itself is a part of the global Indian diaspora.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Belize face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT citizens, although attitudes have been changing in recent years. As of january 2024, Belizean citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 104 countries and territories, ranking the Belizean passport 54th overall, and last among Central American countries, in terms of travel freedom according to the Henley Passport Index.
The International Women of Courage Award, also referred to as the U.S. Secretary of State's International Women of Courage Award, is an American award presented annually by the United States Department of State to women around the world who have shown leadership, courage, resourcefulness, and willingness to sacrifice for others, especially in promoting women's rights.
Guo Jianmei is a Chinese lawyer, human rights activist and director of a women's legal aid NGO. In 2005, she was one of 1000 women put forward as nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. Guo is the recipient of the 2010 Simone De Beauvoir Prize and the International Women of Courage Award in 2011. She received the Right Livelihood Award in 2019. She is married to writer Liu Zhenyun.
The Belize Defence Force Air Wing is the aviation branch of the Belize Defence Force. Formed in 1983, it is based at the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Ladyville. The main tasks of the Air Wing are Reconnaissance, SAR, CASEVAC, aerial resupply and troop transport. Furthermore, they assist the police in drug interdiction and anti-smuggling operations, and can be called upon by the Maritime Wing.

The use of cannabis in Belize is common and largely tolerated; however, possession can result in fines or imprisonment. Possession or use of 10 grams or less on private premises was decriminalized in November 2017.

Ann-Marie Williams is a Belizean public policy advisor, administrator and former journalist. After spending over two decades as a reporter, Williams became the first Executive Director for the National Women's Commission of Belize. She serves as a governmental advisor to the legislature and executive on issues impacting women. She was honored with the US Secretary of State's Women in Public Service Award in 2011.

Amina Khoulani is a Syrian human rights activist and a survivor of Assad's prisons, known for her advocacy work on behalf of political prisoners and their families. She gained exile in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 2014. Since then she has campaigned for other prisoners and helped to support their families. She was chosen as an International Women of Courage Award recipient in March 2020.
Destiny Evelyn Wagner is a Belizean author, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Earth 2021. She is the first Belizean to win the Miss Earth title and the first to win one of the Big Four international beauty pageants.
