Israeli started airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on December 27, 2008, at 11:30 local time, and announced a "unilateral ceasefire" on the evening of January 17, 2009, after three weeks of all-out military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. [1]
The battle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is part of the conflict between the Arabs and Israel that lasted from December 27, 2008 to January 17, 2009. In Israel, it is known as Operation Cast Lead, and among Arabs, it is called the Gaza Massacre (Arabic : مجزرة غازة). [2] Since the first day of the battle ended with the highest number of Palestinian dead and wounded, because this incident was unprecedented since 1948, this day became known as Black Saturday killing day among some Arabs. [2]
The battle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza started shortly after the end of the six-month agreement that was signed between Israel and Hamas and 12 militant groups. According to that agreement, Hamas and Israel had committed to refrain from launching armed operations against each other's territory. During these six months, Israel accused Hamas of breaching the agreement for firing rockets towards its territory, and Hamas accused Israel of breaching the agreement for continuing the economic and fuel blockade of Gaza. [3] [4] [5]
Israel started these attacks on December 27, 2008, at 11:30 local time, and announced a "unilateral ceasefire" on the evening of January 17, 2009, after three weeks of all-out military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. [1] Israel has refused to reopen the crossings of the Gaza Strip after announcing the ceasefire, and as a result, the reconstruction of the ruins of this area has not been carried out. Israel has cited the reason for this siege to prevent more weapons from entering the region. After the announcement of the ceasefire, sporadic clashes between the parties have been reported from time to time. [6]
According to the Israeli army, the number of Israeli casualties up to the 19th day of the war included 3 civilians and 10 soldiers. [7] There is a difference of opinion regarding the number of Palestinians killed, and due to Israel not allowing international journalists to enter Gaza, it is not possible to independently verify the number of casualties and injuries. [8] According to the estimates of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights and the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the number of Palestinians killed varies between 1314 and 1434. [9] [10] The war in Gaza caused many damages to the industrial, economic and health infrastructure of the Gaza Strip. [11]
During the war, the United Nations Human Rights Council in a resolution accused Israel of "gross violations of human rights". The report of the United Nations Fact-Finding Committee, prepared by Richard Goldstone, accused Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes. Israel's war crimes included the use of white phosphorus to attack the buildings of the IDP Relief Agency, the targeting of al-Quds Hospital, and the attack on Al-Vafa Hospital. [2] [12] [13] [14]
The Air strikes in the Gaza Strip in December 2008 became the basis for subsequent conflicts. The 2022 Gaza–Israel clashes is a battle between Israel and the jihadist forces of the Gaza Strip led by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement. After the assassination of the prominent commander of the Al-Quds Brigades, Tayseer al-Jabari, by the Israeli army on August 5, 2022, [15] the Palestinian Islamic Jihad launched successive and intense rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns, [16] [17] which triggered the war. The Gaza Strip, also known simply as Gaza, is a small territory located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea; it is the smaller of the two Palestinian territories, the other being the West Bank, that make up the State of Palestine. Inhabited by mostly Palestinian refugees and their descendants, Gaza is one of the most densely populated territories in the world. Gaza is bordered by Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the east and north. The territory has been under Israeli occupation since 1967.
The Islamic Resistance Movement, abbreviated Hamas, is a Palestinian nationalist Sunni Islamist political organisation with a military wing called the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades. It has governed the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip since 2007.
In 2008 the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Hot Winter, also called Operation Warm Winter, in the Gaza Strip, starting on February 29, 2008 in response to Qassam rockets fired from the Strip by Hamas onto Israeli civilians. At least 112 Palestinians, along with three Israelis, were killed, and more than 150 Palestinians and seven Israelis were injured.
The Gaza–Israel conflict is a localized part of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict beginning in 1948, when 200,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes, settling in the Gaza Strip as refugees. Since then, Israel has been involved in about 15 wars involving organizations in the Gaza Strip. The number of Gazans reportedly killed in the ongoing 2023–2024 war (37,000) is higher than the death toll of all other wars of the Arab–Israeli conflict.
The Gaza War, also known as the First Gaza War, Operation Cast Lead, or the Gaza Massacre, and referred to as the Battle of al-Furqan by Hamas, was a three-week armed conflict between Gaza Strip Palestinian paramilitary groups and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that began on 27 December 2008 and ended on 18 January 2009 with a unilateral ceasefire. The conflict resulted in 1,166–1,417 Palestinian and 13 Israeli deaths. Over 46,000 homes were destroyed in Gaza, making more than 100,000 people homeless.
The 2008 Israel–Hamas ceasefire was an Egyptian-brokered six-month Tahdia "for the Gaza area", which went into effect between Hamas and Israel on 19 June 2008. According to the Egyptian-brokered agreement, Israel promised to stop air strikes and other attacks, while in return, there would not be rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza. Once the ceasefire held, Israel was to gradually begin to ease its blockade of Gaza.
Emad Akel also spelled Imad Akel was a commander of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. He was killed by the Israel Defense Forces.
The following is a list of military operations of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
In November 2012, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Pillar of Defense, which was an eight-day campaign in the Hamas-governed Gaza Strip, beginning on 14 November 2012 with the killing of Ahmed Jabari, chief of the Gaza military wing of Hamas, by an Israeli airstrike.
Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip in Palestine since its takeover of the region from rival party Fatah in June 2007. Hamas' government was led by Ismail Haniyeh from 2007 until February 2017, when Haniyeh was replaced as leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip by Yahya Sinwar. Until October 2024, Yahya Sinwar was the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In January 2024, due to the ongoing Israel–Hamas war, Israel said that Hamas lost control of most of the northern part of the Gaza Strip. In May 2024, Hamas regrouped in the north.
Ismail Haniyeh was a Palestinian politician who served as chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau from May 2017 until his assassination in July 2024. He also served as prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from March 2006 until June 2014 and Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from June 2007 until February 2017, where he was succeeded by Yahya Sinwar.
The 2014 Gaza War, also known as Operation Protective Edge, and Battle of the Withered Grain, was a military operation launched by Israel on 8 July 2014 in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory that has been governed by Hamas since 2007. Following the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank by Hamas-affiliated Palestinian militants, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initiated Operation Brother's Keeper, in which it killed 10 Palestinians, injured 130 and imprisoned more than 600. Hamas reportedly did not retaliate but resumed rocket attacks on Israel more than two weeks later, following the killing of one of its militants by an Israeli airstrike on 29 June. This escalation triggered a seven-week-long conflict between the two sides, one of the deadliest outbreaks of open conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in decades. The combination of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli airstrikes resulted in over two thousand deaths, the vast majority of which were Gazan Palestinians. This includes a total of six Israeli civilians who were killed as a result of the conflict.
Capital punishment in the Gaza Strip has been enforced by multiple governments, militaries, and irregular militias throughout the area's history. A large proportion of the killings have been associated with broader violent conflicts. Many of the executions have be described as extrajudicial killings due to an incomplete or unaccountable court procedures.
Tayseer Mahmoud al-Jabari was a Palestinian militant and senior commander of the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement. He succeeded Baha Abu al-Ata as the brigades' commander in the northern Gaza Strip, holding that position from the former's assassination in 2019 until his own assassination in 2022, which sparked the 2022 Gaza–Israel clashes.
