Lt. Gen. Deepak Harishchandra Summanwar UYSM is a retired Indian Army officer who fought the Kargil War in 1999 and was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal. [1] [2]

Uttam Yudh Seva Medal

Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) is one of India's military decorations for Wartime Distinguished Service. It is awarded for a high degree of distinguished services in an operational context. "Operational context" includes times of war, conflict, or hostilities. The award is a wartime equivalent of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, which is a Peacetime Distinguished Service decoration. Uttam Yudh Seva Medal may be awarded posthumously.

Indian Army Land based branch of the Indian Armed Forces

Kargil War undeclared war between India and Pakistan

The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC). In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay which was the name of the Indian operation to clear the Kargil sector. The Indian Air Force's role in acting jointly with Ground troops during the War that was aimed at flushing out Regular and Irregular troops of the Pakistani Army from vacated Indian Positions in the Kargil sector along the Line of Control. was given the code name Operation Safed Sagar

He commanded an Infantry Brigade in Rajasthan and a Mountain Brigade on the Line of Control in J&K from where his brigade took part in operations at Kargil in 1999. [3] He has commanded a division in Kargil during Operation Parakram. He has received awards for gallantry and distinguished service, Mention in Despatch in Indo Pak War 1971, Chief of the Army Staff Commendation Card for Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, Vishisht Seva Medal for Command of Brigade in Kargil Operation and Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for Operation Parakram in Kargil. [4] General Summanwar has held a number of instructional and staff appointments to include an instructional tenure at the National Defence Academy, Brigade Major in a Counter Insurgency area, Colonel General Staff in HQ Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, Director, Military Operations Directorate at Army Headquarters and Additional Director General at the Perspective Planning Directorate. He assumed office on 9 August 2017 after Lieutenant General Ravi Thodge retired. He was part of one of the strike corp which was responsible for carrying out three strikes inside POK in Surgical Strikes held in 2016 by the Indian Army to clean out all the Pakistani Terrorists Camps. As surgical strikes were carried out very secretly to maintain surprise, so very few people knew of them, one of those involved was Lt. Gen. Nimbhorkar. Terrorists numbering 55 were killed in this operation.

Lieutenant General Ajae Kumar Sharma, UYSM, YSM, SM was the former Commander, XVI Corps of the Indian Army and served from 9 October 2016 till 10 October 2017. He assumed the post from Lt General Rajendra Ramrao Nimbhorkar and succeeded was Lt General succeeded by Saranjeet Singh.
