Dempo Mining Corporation Limited is a prominent mining company from the western Indian state of Goa. The mineral business was founded by Mr. Vasantrao S. Dempo in 1941 along with his younger brother Mr. Vaikuntrao Dempo. Mr. Vasantrao S. Dempo was the Founder Chairman of the company, who was succeeded by his son Mr. Vasudeva V. Dempo. Currently Shrinivas V. Dempo, son of Mr. Vasudeva V. Dempo is the chairman of Dempo Group. Dempo Sports Club is linked to Dempo mining company. [1] Dempo company has interests in many fields and the umbrella company is known as V.S. Dempo & Co. In June 2011, Vedanta Limited acquired Dempo Group's mining assets for 17.5 billion (US$220 million).

Hindustan Foods

This Dempo Group company, established in 1988 as a joint venture with Glaxo, manufactures cereal-based food products including baby foods. Hindustan Foods manufactures high quality cereal- based food products for all age groups. The range encompasses baby foods, instant porridge, breakfast cereals and health drinks. [2] The Vanity Case Group, led by Mr. Sameer Kothari, acquired a majority stake in 2013. The company is responsible for manufacturing about a third of Hindustan Unilever’s beverage business, like Bru coffee and Lipton tea. It also works with companies like Danone and US Polo.

Dempo Travels

Sensing the tourism potential of Goa, the Dempo Travel Agency was established in 1960 as a travel division of the flagship V.S.Dempo & Company Pvt. Ltd, and has been one of the mainstays of Goan tourism industry. In 2000-01, a new company, Dempo Travels Pvt Ltd., was formed to handle this business independently. [3]

Dempo Industries Newspaper Publishing

The two main divisions under this company are the newspaper publishing division under the aegis of Navhind Papers and Publications and the Energy division. Apart from writers of national repute, it features the most respected writers of Goa. To cater to the needs of the Marathi speaking population "Navprabha" was launched in 1970. It is a respected Marathi newspaper in Goa, with editorials, supplements and special issues. [4]

Dempo Ship Building

There exist two group companies in this business, Dempo Shipbuilding and Engineering Pvt. Ltd. and Dempo Shipyard Pvt. Ltd. Another facility, on the banks of river Zuari, in the name of Dempo Shipyard Pvt Ltd has been added in recent years, to take advantage of the growing business in this industry. This company has already built a number of barges and has several orders in hand. The higher draft of the Zuari River allows bigger barges to be constructed in this facility. [5]

Goa Carbon

Manufacturer and marketer of Calcined Petroleum Coke, this Dempo Group company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Goa Carbon is the second largest manufacturer of Calcined Petroleum Coke in the country. Calcined Petroleum coke is a pure form of carbon and is used for making anodes for Aluminium smelting. It is also used as a source of carbon in the steel industry. Other specialty consumer segments include titanium dioxide and other chemicals. Goa Carbon was established in 1976. It has manufacturing facilities in Goa, Paradeep and Bilaspur. Total capacity is 240,000 MT per annum. [6]

Aparant Iron and Steel

This Dempo group company manufactures pig iron. Plans to add further value to the product are on the anvil. Based on Tata Korf technology, this mini blast furnace based plant has a capacity of 160,000 TPA. [7]

Devashri Nirman LLP

Devashri Real Estate Developers was launched by the Dempo family twenty five years ago, the developers have projects in Panaji, Taleigao, Porvorim, Vasco, Caranzalem and Candolim.

For the steel-making industry, the most suitable carbon additive is calcined petroleum coke with fixed carbon of 98.5%min. Sulfur in calcined petroleum coke is a crucial element, for sulfur impacts the quality of steel. The lower the sulfur, the better quality of calcined petroleum coke. The sulfur content of calcined petroleum coke is decided by the sulfur content in petroleum coke. Northeast China is the only source of low sulfur petroleum coke in the world. G-high carbon has been the origin for many trading companies and metallurgical factories when they look for qualified carbon additives.

Vasantrao Shrinivas Sinai Dempo was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist from Goa, who founded the Dempo Group of Industries. The mining business he founded in 1941 has now grown to include interests in shipbuilding, minerals, foods, iron and steel, education, travels and construction. He was the founder of the Dempo S.C., a popular football club based in Goa, which he nurtured after acquiring the local club, Bicholim SC. Vasantrao Dempo Reflective Chair, an endowment professorship at the Tepper School of Business of the Carnegie Mellon University is named after him and is funded by the endowment of Dempo Group. Dempo Charities Trust, the philanthropic arm of the Group runs several educational institutions in Goa. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1991.

Goa Carbon Limited is an Indian petrochemical company and is engaged in the manufacture and sale of Calcined Petroleum Coke. It is a public company listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange and is the second largest producer of Calcined Petroleum Coke in India. Other specialty consumer segments include titanium dioxide and other chemicals. The company's calcination plant is located approximately 40 kilometers from the Mormugoa Port. It was incorporated and established on 22 June 1967. It has manufacturing facilities in Goa, Paradip and Bilaspur. Total capacity is 1,65,000 MT per annum.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vasantrao Ghatge</span> Indian businessman (1916–1986)

Vasantrao Madhavrao Ghatge was an Indian entrepreneur, business magnate, industrialist and a professor. He was the co-founder of Ghatge Patil Transports along with Jaykumar Patil in the year 1945 based in Kolhapur. Ghatge was widely recognized as the pioneer in the road transport sector for revolutionizing transportation of cargo or goods. He was born in Kolhapur to Radhabai and Madhavrao Ghatge. He was raised in Kolhapur in the 1920s and completed Master of Science in Botany in the year 1938 from Fergusson College of Pune.

Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is a port on the western coast of India, in the coastal state of Goa. Commissioned in 1885 on the site of a natural harbour, it is one of India's oldest ports. The port employs around 2,600 employees and has about 4,000 pensioners.

Ramnath Kare, also known as Ramnathbab and Babu. is an Indian industrialist, educationist and philanthropist from Goa. He is based in Margao, South Goa and is an avid reader. Kare has studied at St Xaviers College in Mumbai.
