Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) is an Indian integrated mining and resources producer of zinc, lead, silver and cadmium. It is a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited. [4] Earlier it was a Central Public Sector Undertaking, sold by Government of India to Vedanta Limited when Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bharatiya Janta Party Government was in power in the year 2003. HZL is the world's second largest zinc producer. [5]

History

Hindustan Zinc Limited was incorporated from the erstwhile Metal Corporation of India on 10 January 1966 as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).

In 2001, as part of the Government of India's disinvestment program of loss-making PSUs, the company was put up for sale. [6] [7]

In April 2002, Sterlite Opportunities and Ventures Limited (SOVL) made an open offer for acquisition of shares of the company; consequent to the disinvestment of Government of India's (GOI) stake of 26% including management control to SOVL and acquired additional 20% of shares from public, pursuant to the SEBI Regulations 1997. In August 2003, SOVL acquired additional shares to the extent of 18.92% of the paid up capital from GOI in exercise of call option clause in the share holder's agreement between GOI and SOVL.[ citation needed ]

With the above additional acquisition, SOVL's stake in the company went up to 64.92%. Thus GOI's stake in the company now stands at 29.54%. SOVL was merged with Sterlite Industries India Ltd in April 2011. [8]

Sterlite Industries merged with Sesa Goa Ltd to form Sesa Sterlite Limited in August 2013. Sesa Sterlite was renamed to Vedanta Limited in April 2015. Hindustan Zinc Ltd share price closed at ₹431.85 by 7.59%, up in 12 April 2024 along with Vedanta Limited share price. [10] [ citation needed ]

Operations

Mining

HZL operates the world's third largest open-pit mine, and the world's largest zinc mine in Rampura Agucha, Rajasthan. Other mines owned by HZL are located in Rajpura and Dariba, Sindesar Khurd, Kayar and Zawar, all in Rajasthan.[ citation needed ]

Smelting

HZL operates Zinc and Lead smelters and refineries at Chanderiya (Chittorgarh), Debari (Udaipur) & Dariba (Rajsamand) in Rajasthan with total zinc and lead production capacity of 10 lakh tonnes. A smelting facility was established at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. It was initially intended to serve as a smelting facility for Silver production, but later Zinc and Lead melting and casting plants were also established here. The total metal production was 8,80,000 tonnes for year 2014–2015. [11] [ better source needed ] It also has zinc smelter in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where operations have been suspended since February 2012. [12] [ better source needed ]

Zinc Football Academy is an Indian professional football academy club based in Zawar a mining town in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The club competes in R-League A Division, the top-tier league of the state. The club is owned by Hindustan Zinc Limited Group. Zinc FA is the current champions of R-League Season.[ citation needed ]

Rampura Agucha is a zinc and lead mine located on a massive sulfide deposit in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, India. Rampura Agucha is located 220 km (140 mi) from Jaipur. It is north of Bhilwara, and northwest of Shahpura. Rampura Agucha is 10 km (6.2 mi) southeast of Gulabpura on NH 79. The mine is owned by Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), and has the world's largest deposits of zinc and lead.

Mahendra Singh Mehta is an Indian businessman. He is a former CEO of Vedanta Resources and is currently the head of India operations for GFG Alliance. He is on the board of directors of ESL Steel, a division of Vedanta Resources, and Hindustan Construction Company.

Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) or Public Sector Enterprises (PSE) in India are government-owned enterprises in which 51 percent or more share capital is held by the Government of India or state governments or joint ventures between multiple Public Sector Enterprises. Depending on the level of government ownership, they can be broadly categorised as Central PSUs or State PSUs. These entities include government companies, statutory corporations, banking institutions, and departmentally run companies. PSUs are officially classified into three categories, which are Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) and Public Sector Banks (PSB) owned by the central government or other CPSEs/PSBs, and State Level Public Enterprises (SLPE) owned by state governments or other SLPEs. CPSE is further classified into Strategic Sector and Non-Strategic Sector. Depending on their financial performance and progress, CPSEs are granted the status of Maharatna, Navaratna, and Miniratna.

Disinvestment in Public sector undertakings in India is a process of public asset sales done by the President of India on behalf of the Government of India. It can be directly offered for sale to the private sector or indirectly done through a bidding process. The Public Enterprises Survey (2015–16), brought out by the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries, & Government of India on the performance of Central Public Sector Enterprises was placed in both the Houses of Parliament on 21 March 2017. There were 331 CPSEs in 2017-18, out of which 257 were in operation. The remaining 74 of the CPSEs were being established.

Copper production in India is only about 2 percent of world copper production in view of its potential reserve limited to 60,000 km2 of which 20,000 km2 area has been subject to exploration, as of 2012. But in production it is still within the first 20 countries of the world and also one of its largest importers in line with China, Japan, South Korea and Germany. As of April 2005 survey by the Indian Bureau of Mines the total reserve has been estimated as 1394.42 million tonnes out of which 369.49 million tonnes (26.5%) is categorized as “reserves”. Mohan Kumar Mangalam Football Tournament commonly known as the MKM Trophy, MKM Memorial Football Tournament is a prestigious annual Indian football tournament held in Zawar Rajasthan and organized by Hindustan Zinc (HZL) and Zawar Mines Labour Union. The tournament was first started in 1976 and is named after Mohan Kumar Mangalam. Apart from some top clubs from Rajasthan, clubs from neighbouring states, also have participated in this trophy.
