The Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited, abbreviated as HUDCO, is an Indian public sector undertaking engaged in housing finance and infrastructure project finance. The Govt Grants Navratna Status to PSU on April 18,2024. [3]

History

The institution came into existence on 25 April 1970 as a private limited company under the complete ownership of the Government of India with an equity base of Rs.2 crore under the Companies Act, 1956. [4] [5] [6]

It was created against the backdrop of housing deficit in India in 1960s and 70s, with the objective of addressing issue of housing finance and playing role in urban infrastructure development. [6]

The organisation provides finance for setting up of new towns and also works as consultancy services for the projects of designing and planning relating to Housing and Urban Development programs in India as well as abroad.

HUDCO won UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the contributions to the development of housing in 1991. [7] The institution was conferred with miniratna status in 2004. [8] [9]

Infrastructure

HUDCO started financing for development of infrastructures in 1989. [10] The priority was giving for infrastructure facilities including projects in the sectors of drainage, electricity, water supply, sewerage, solid waste management and roads in the urban areas. Later the social infrastructure components like primary schools and play grounds, hostels for working women, healthcare centres, police stations and jails, courts, etc. received benefit of funding for low cost. [11]

Road and Transport

HUDCO has provided term loans for construction of roads and other transportation sectors which includes construction of Airport, Railways, Ports, Metro Rails, Bridges and Flyover, Railway Over-bridges, Subways, Bypasses, Bus Terminal, Parking complexes, Purchase of public transport vehicles, Bus Stops/stations, Intelligent Traffic Management system etc.

Airport projects of Cochin International Airport and Calicut International Airport in Kerala are supported by HUDCO. [12] The infrastructure for Kerala State Road Transport Corporation and UPSRTC are also funded by them. HUDCO sanctioned 100 crore for KSRTC in 2002 for purchasing 550 buses and 350 mini-buses [13] and ₹260 crores in 2014 for purchasing 1500 buses. [14]

Solid Waste Management

In 1994,HUDCO set up a Waste Management Cell for promotion of municipal waste management. [15]

Capacity Building and Consultancy Services: HUDCO provides planning, designing, and urban development consultancy services and technical assistance to state governments, urban local bodies, and other stakeholders. It also organizes training programs and training workshops for professionals.

HUDCO has sanctioned 58 schemes with a project cost of 675 crore to provide new systems and to augment the existing systems. [15]

Water Supply

295 water supply schemes, with a project cost of 5,285 crore was funded by HUDCO. [15] In 2016, HUDCO has also given finance to Nellore's underground drainage project proposed by Nellore Municipal Corporation. [16]

The PSU provides loans to Central/State Sector Power Utilities in the country, State Electricity Boards, Rural Electric Cooperatives, NGOs and Private Power Developers. On 20 March 2019, PFC signed an agreement to acquire a 52.63% controlling stake in REC for 14,500 crore (US$1.7 billion). On 28 March, PFC announced that it had completed making the payment for the acquisition and intended to merge REC with itself in 2020. However, REC has maintained that merging PFC-REC is no longer an option.

Kozhikode Light Metro is a proposed Light Metro system for the city of Kozhikode (Calicut), in India. In 2010, the State government explored the possibility of implementing a metro rail project for Kozhikode city and its suburbs. The proposal was to have a corridor connecting Meenchanda to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital through the heart of the city. An inception report was submitted by a Bangalore-based consultant, Wilber Smith, on the detailed feasibility study on the prospect of implementing the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) and Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) in the city. However, the project has been scrapped to be replaced by Kozhikode Monorail project.

Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) in India are government-owned entities in which at least 51% of stake is under the ownership of the Government of India or state governments.These type of firms can also be a joint venture of multiple PSUs. These entities perform commercial functions on behalf of the government. Depending on the level of government ownership, PSUs are officially classified into two categories: Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), owned by the central government or other CPSUs; and State Public Sector Undertakings (SPSUs), owned by state governments. CPSU and SPSU is further classified into Strategic Sector and Non-Strategic Sector. Depending on their financial performance and progress, CPSUs are granted the status of Maharatna, Navaratna, and Miniratna.

Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, officially Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus, is a bus terminus in Kilambakkam, a southern suburb of Chennai, India. Situated along the GST Road, it became operational on 30 December 2023. Spread over an area of 88.52 acres (358,200 m2), it was built to decongest the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in Koyambedu. It is an integrated bus terminus for mofussil buses operated by TNSTC, SETC, KSRTC, KSRTC SWIFT and contract carriage buses. The terminus is connected to other parts of the Chennai Metropolitan Area and suburbs by MTC buses.
