India Post Payments Bank, abbreviated as IPPB, is a division of India Post that is under the ownership of the Department of Post, a department under the Ministry of Communications of the Government of India. Opened in 2018, as of March 2024, the bank has more than 9 crore customers. [1]

History

On 19 August 2015, the India Post received a licence to run a payments bank from the Reserve Bank of India. On 17 August 2016, it was registered as a public limited government company for setting up a payments bank. [2] IPPB is operating with the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications. [2] [3]

The pilot project of IPPB was inaugurated on 30 January 2017 at Raipur and Ranchi. [2] In August 2018, the Union Cabinet approved the cost of 1,435 crore (US$170 million) for setting up the bank. [4] The first phase of the bank, with 650 branches and 3,250 post offices as access points was inaugurated on 1 September 2018. [5] [6] Over ten thousand postmen have been roped into the first phase. [7] [8] By September 2020, the bank had acquired about 3.5 crore customers. [9] The bank had acquired about 4 crore customers by December 2020. In January 2022, India Post Payments Bank has crossed 8 crore customers mark. [10]

IPPB aims to utilize all of India's 155,015 post offices as access points and 3 lakh postal postmen and Grameen Dak Sewaks to provide doorstep banking services. [2] [3]

IPPB offers savings accounts, money transfer and insurances through the third parties, bill and utility payments. [2] [11] [12]

IPPB has been allowed to link around 17 crore postal savings bank (PSB) accounts with its accounts. [13]

RuPay facilitates electronic payment at all Indian banks and financial institutions. Paytm is an Indian multinational financial technology company, that specializes in digital payments and financial services, based in Noida, India. Paytm was founded in 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma under One97 Communications. The company offers mobile payment services to consumers and enables merchants to receive payments through QR code payment, Soundbox, Android-based-payment terminal, and online payment gateway. In partnership with financial institutions, Paytm also offers financial services such as microcredit and buy now, pay later to its consumers and merchants.

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana is a Government-backed Life insurance scheme in India. It was originally mentioned in the year 2015 Budget speech by the then-Finance Minister, late Arun Jaitley in February 2015. It was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May in Kolkata. As of May 2015, only 20% of India's population has any kind of insurance, this scheme aims to increase the number.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Unified Payments Interface</span> Indian instant payment system

Unified Payments Interface, commonly referred to as UPI, is an Indian instant payment system as well as protocol developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016. The interface facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. It is used on mobile devices to instantly transfer funds between two bank accounts. The mobile number of the device is required to be registered with the bank. The UPI ID of the recipient can be used to transfer money. It runs as an open source application programming interface (API) on top of the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), and is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Indian Banks started making their UPI-enabled apps available on Google Play on 25 August 2016.

The 2016 Indian bank data breach was reported in October 2016. It was estimated 3.2 million debit cards were compromised. Major Indian banks, among them SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI, YES Bank and Axis Bank, were among the worst hit. The breach went undetected for months and was first detected after several banks reported fraudulent use of their customers’ cards in China and the United States, while these customers were in India.

Airtel Payments Bank is an Indian payments bank with its headquarters in New Delhi. The company is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel. On 5 January 2022, it was granted the scheduled bank status by the Reserve Bank of India under the second schedule of RBI Act, 1934.

Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) is an Indian payments bank, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Noida. In the same year, it received the license to run a payments bank from the Reserve Bank of India and was launched in November 2017. In 2021, the bank received a scheduled bank status from the RBI.

YONO is an integrated digital banking platform offered by State Bank of India (SBI) to enable users to access a variety of financial and other services such as flight, train, bus and taxi bookings, online shopping, or medical bill payments. YONO is offered as a mobile banking app for both Android and iOS.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Digital rupee</span> Official currency of India

The Digital Rupee (e₹) or eINR or E-Rupee is a tokenised digital version of the Indian Rupee, issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The Digital Rupee was proposed in January 2017 and launched on 1 December 2022. Digital Rupee is using blockchain distributed-ledger technology.
