Oxigen Services is an Indian fintech company. It is involved in the micropayment of services and remittances in real time. [1] [2]

In June 2016, the company reported that its transaction volume rate increased to 600 million transactions per year with a customer base of more than 150 million. [3]

History

The company was started in 2004 by an alumnus of IIT Roorkee with seed capital of ₹4 crores. [4]

In 2006, Oxigen Services received $11.5 million from Citi Venture Capital, USA and then $35 million from Microsoft in 2008. [5]

The firm launched India’s first non-bank mobile wallet, [6] [7] approved by RBI in 2013 for instant money transfers to any bank. [8] These money transfers are available real-time in association with National Payments Corporation of India using IMPS. [9]

In 2014, the company was estimated at $150 million (₹921 crores). [10]

In 2016, Oxigen became a part of the Bharat Bill Payment System to connect users with the central bill payments and settlement system of National Payments Corporation of India. [11]

The firm set up ‘Super PoS - Micro ATM’ (point of sale) terminals to meet the requirements of merchants. [12] This Super PoS works as Micro ATM - Cash-In and Cash-Out, biometric scanner for Aadhaar transactions, Jan Dhan account servicing, merchant payments and eKYC. [13]

Oxigen Wallet

Oxigen Wallet, powered by Oxigen Services Pvt. Ltd. is India’s first non-bank wallet, approved by Reserve Bank of India, [18] allowing customers to send and receive money through popular social networking platforms. [19]

As per a report published in April 2016 by VCCircle, the app claims to have 20 million users, and is accepted at around 9,000 merchant locations and 10,000 online sites. [20]

The services include money transfer, mobile & DTHTV payments, utility bill payments, gift cards, travel, movie ticket booking and Virtual Visa. [3] [17] Oxigen is the first online wallet allowing consumers to load cash in their mobile wallet. It enables individuals to transfer money, even if they don't have a bank account. [21]

Oxigen enables payments in different systems with various brand tie-ups.

Projects

Aarambh Ventures is Oxigen's accelerator programme which aims to increase startups' growth and innovation. Kalaage was the first startup at Aarambh Ventures and it recently got funded. [25]

Sponsorship

The firm appointed cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador. [1] Oxigen sponsors the Twenty20 squads of South Africa national cricket team [26] and New Zealand national cricket team [27] along with Indian Premier League’s Gujarat Lions franchisee. [28]

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is an Indian public sector company that operates retail payments and settlement systems in India. The organization is an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, for creating a robust payment and settlement infrastructure in India.

RuPay is an Indian multinational financial services and payment service system, conceived and owned by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It was launched in 2012, to fulfil the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) vision of establishing a domestic, open and multilateral system of payments. RuPay facilitates electronic payments at almost all Indian banks and financial institutions. NPCI has partnered with Discover Financial and JCB to help the RuPay network gain international acceptance.

Mobile payments is a mode of payment using mobile phones. Instead of using methods like cash, cheque, and credit card, a customer can use a mobile phone to transfer money or to pay for goods and services. A customer can transfer money or pay for goods and services by sending an SMS, using a Java application over GPRS, a WAP service, over IVR or other mobile communication technologies. In India, this service is bank-led. Customers wishing to avail themselves of this service will have to register with banks which provide this service. Currently, this service is being offered by several major banks and is expected to grow further. Mobile Payment Forum of India (MPFI) is the umbrella organisation which is responsible for deploying mobile payments in India.

MobiKwik is an Indian payment service provider founded in 2009 that provides a mobile phone-based payment system and digital wallet. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an Indian instant payment system as well as protocol developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016. The interface facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. It is used on mobile devices to instantly transfer funds between two bank accounts. The mobile number of the device is required to be registered with the bank. The UPI ID of the recipient can be used to transfer money. It runs as an open source application programming interface (API) on top of the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), and is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Indian Banks started making their UPI-enabled apps available on Google Play on 25 August 2016.

National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) is an open-loop, inter-operable transport card conceived by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ‘One Nation, One Card' vision. It was launched on 4 March 2019. The transport card enables the user to pay for travel, toll tax, retail shopping and withdraw money.

Merchantrade Asia (Merchantrade) is a financial service company based in Malaysia. The company's business is centered on international money transfers, foreign currency exchange, wholesale banknotes, digital payment processing and mobile telecommunications. They also introduced microinsurance as part of their service offerings.

Airtel Payments Bank is an Indian payments bank with its headquarters in New Delhi. The company is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel. On 5 January 2022, it was granted the scheduled bank status by the Reserve Bank of India under the second schedule of RBI Act, 1934.

Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) was an Indian payments bank, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Noida. In the same year, it received the license to run a payments bank from the Reserve Bank of India and was launched in November 2017. In 2021, the bank received a scheduled bank status from the RBI.
