Tata Communications Limited (previously known as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited) is an Indian telecommunications company. Before its acquisition by Tata Group it was a government-owned telecommunications service provider and under the ownership of Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, and the Government of India. It was then sold to Tata Group in 2002 under the Third Vajpayee ministry government. [3]

Tata's communications provides network services and software-defined network platforms, such as Ethernet, SD-WAN, content delivery networks (CDNs), the internet, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and private lines. [4] [ better source needed ]

It is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.

The business was founded as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) in 1986. [5] [6] Under the chairmanship of B. K. Syngal (1991–98), [7] VSNL launched the first publicly-available internet plans in India in 1995. [8] [9] The international arm of VSNL (VSNL International) was launched in 2004.

In 2004, VSNL acquired DishnetDSL in a slump sale from its promoter Chinnakannan Sivasankaran. [10]

After the Government of India launched Disinvestment of Public Sector Units in India, VSNL was completely acquired by the Tata Group and renamed Tata Communications on 13 February 2008. [11] [12]

In 2009, Tata Communications and Tyco Telecommunications completed the TGN-Intra Asia cable system.[ citation needed ]

In 2012, the company completed its network across Egypt linking Europe to India, and created a subsea fibre network that circumnavigates the world. The 9,280-kilometre (5,770 mi) Eurasian section of the Tata Global Network runs across the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East, connecting Mumbai with Marseille. [13]

In January 2016, Windstream Communications announced it was extending its 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100G) network from New Jersey data center operator NJFX's presence at Tata's Cable Landing Station (CLS) in Wall Township, New Jersey, to Ashburn, Virginia's internet hub. [14]

Covad Communications Company, also known as Covad Communications Group, was an American provider of broadband voice and data communications. By Q3 2006, the company had 530,000 subscribers, and ranked as the 16th largest ISP in the United States. Covad was acquired by U.S. Venture Partners, who in 2010 announced a three-way merger of MegaPath, Covad, and Speakeasy, creating a single Managed Services Local Exchange Carrier (MSLEC), providing voice and internet services; the new company was named MegaPath.

Internet in India began in 1986 and was initially available only to the educational and research community. General public access to the internet in India began on 15 August 1995. By 2023, India had more than 900 million Internet users. The Indian Telecommunication Service, widely known as ITS, and earlier known as Telegraph Engineering Service Class I is one of the Central Civil Services under Group 'A' of the executive branch of the Government of India. The appointment to this service is done through Combined Engineering Services Exam held every year by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India. The service was created to meet the techno managerial needs of the government in areas related to telecommunications. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had been managed for years by the officers of this permanent cadre, called the Indian Telecommunications Service (ITS).
