Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited (KDHP) is a privately owned Indian consumer goods and tea plantation company headquartered in Idukki district, Kerala. [3] The company was formed in 2005 post the exit of Tata Tea from its plantations in Munnar. Tata Tea Ltd restructured and transferred its holdings to the Kanan Devan Hills village [4] under participatory management. [5]

The company retails its products under the RippleTea brand name. [6] RippleTea products include a variety of teas, essential oils and aromatic products, incense sticks and coffee.

Branded operations

In the year 2010, while primarily being a B2B player, KDHP launched its consumer brand Ripple Tea for distribution in retail outlets across Munnar, Kerala. [7]

Ecommerce operations

In 2015, Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited launched its e-commerce portal for distribution across India. In 2020, KDHP re-launched an independent e-comm portal for Ripple Tea.

Retail outlet operations

The company ventured into branded retail outlets in 2018 with the launch of three Chai Bazar Outlets in Munnar. [8] These were further expanded in 2019 under the franchise model with the opening of an outlet in Kumily, Kerala. [9]

Environmental record

KDHP took a step forward towards sustainably grown teas in 2014, by getting certified by Rainforest Alliance. [10] [11] The company has USDA Organic certification for 300 acres of its plantations at Top Station and Fairtrade certification at Chundavurrai estate since 2009. KDHP estates and factories obtained Trustea certification in 2014.

Top Station

Top Station is a tourist destination located in Theni district of Tamil nadu. This area is popular for the rare Neelakurinji flowers. The Kurinjimala Sanctuary is nearby. Top Station is the western entrance to the planned Palani Hills National Park.

UTZ, formerly called UTZ Certified, is a program and a label for sustainable farming. The organization was founded as a non-profit in the Netherlands in 2002. The UTZ label is featured on more than 10,000 product packages in over 116 countries. In 2014, UTZ was reported to be the largest program for sustainable farming of coffee and cocoa in the world. The UTZ program addresses agricultural practices, social and living conditions, farm management, and the environment. In January 2018, UTZ officially merged with the Rainforest Alliance in response to the increasing challenges of deforestation, climate change, systemic poverty, and social inequity.

Kannan Devan Hills Village in Kerala, India

Kannan Devan Hills is a large village located in Devikulam taluk of Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. The village of Kannan Devan Hills in Devikulam Taluk, was given on lease on 11 July 1877 by the Poonjar Thampuran to John Daniel Munroe, of London and Peermedu, for tea plantation. The lands and plantations were later resumed by the Government of Kerala by the Kannan Devan Hills Act, 1971.

The KDHP Tea Museum is an industry and history museum situated in Munnar, a town in the Idukki district of Kerala in South India. Tata Tea Museum is its official name, but it's also known as Nalluthanni Estate where it is located, or Kannan Devan Hills Plantation (KDHP) Tea Museum.

The Munnar Plantation strike was a nine-day strike led by the women of the Munnar Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited (KDHPL). It was famous for it being an all-women uprising leading to the formation of an all-women union Pembilai Orumai and is referred to as a turning point in Kerala's political history.
